Big result....Swindon lose to Mansfield. Forest Green march on....and March got their 2nd in a 2-0 win. Tranmere (2nd) - 1-1 versus Salford.

23 games...were still 3rd.

I dont think we will get top 3 but will be in the playoffs and then who knows.
Although we had been winning games (until recently) I've never had the feeling we are the that much better to be top 3.
If we can get a couple of players in, and stop the rot quickly then we might just hold on or be challenging top 3. But I think Swindon will overtake us and Port Vale with some of the signing they are making.
FGR have to go on a bad run at some point (starting this weekend hopefully) but I think they have enough of a buffer to ride out any dip in results.

Unless we bring in another 2/3 decent recruits (and somehow offload the likes of Flores, Rose, Kabamba & BAS) then I feel a slip into mid table will happen sooner rather than later.

I think losing Etete will be a much bigger issue than many think, as he was so pivotal to the way we're trying to play...Rose, Kabamba & BAS simply can't play that role. Flores has been a real disappointment, and if only we declined the option to sign him on a perm, we wouldn't be lumbered with him. He just doesn't seem interested whatsoever & miles off it when he plays.

Obviously I hope I'm wrong, but all other teams around us seem to be recruiting with a purpose

Wouldn't be surprised if we have enough about us to go up automatically, but worry about next season as the squad would need an overhaul to survive in League One. That's probably always the case mind, even if we ran away with the league the top players would always get immediately poached by bigger clubs like the previous two times we've been promoted.

FG are doing a Man City...other than that who knows? Tranmere's point was an improvement from our none in the last six. The next couple of games are probably going to tell us if we are about to go on the slide. Maybe most worrying, we are only 5 points from being outside of the play offs! PV could currently leapfrog us with games in hand. I reckon it will be an exciting end of season with a lot to play for. Fair play to FG though, they've smashed it.

WSOAP - is this correct as the impression I got is that most are short term loans of unknowns?

And we can leap frog Tranmere.
Agree its going to be a tight end to the season. As always one or two will drop out of contention and one or two will rocket up to join the party. Just hope we're in the mix at the end of the season.

Glad this is a dilemma we have. At the beginning of the season I’d have bit your hand off if given this scenario at the half way point.
Let’s hope we can push on and keep the points tally and wins ticking over to the finish line. One or two more additions of a better quality needed and also a few exits if possible.

Anything from Saturday will be the boost we need. You start losing 3 on the bounce and it quickly becomes a bit of a rot. FG have failed to win on 8 occasions so more than capable of turning them over.
Finger crossed eh?!

Mansfield are the ones to watch. Five wins in a row and they've come from nowhere to just outside the play offs only on goal difference.
I still think we'll be there or there abouts but we need to start winning again and a couple more decent signings in the next couple of weeks.

Before the enforced break JB said he was looking up at chasing down FGR and now we are looking over our shoulder at the teams chasing us. We are capable of a top 3 finish if we can rediscover the art of keeping clean sheets and bring in a goal scorer. I certainly would not put any money on it.
Although FGR are a long way clear at the top it is possible they could stumble as their fixtures so far have been quite kind to them. Taking the top 8 teams they have played 5 of them at home (winning 2, drawing 1, losing 2) with Newport County and Mansfield still to visit. However they have not played any of the other 7 away but of course start with us this week, so they have a tough second half of the season.
Port Vale have been busy in the transfer market and look to have made some useful signings and they have 2 games in hand on us.

FGR have had their bad run...two consecutive 0-0s before despatching Colchester Utd last night!

Mansfield have won 9 of their last 10 but have played 14 at home and only 9 away (losing 5). Their fans are worried that they will lose JJO'T this month as he has had several offers from other clubs including div 1. Their form took an upturn when he joined after strangely being without a club for a few months.

I would be Tempted to resign JJOT based on his current form .

I doubt that JJO'T would want to return. At this stage of his career he needs first team football and as he now plays centre back he would have to dislodge Horsfall or Guthrie. I was never really impressed with him playing centre back at Burton.

I don't see FGR blowing up, and we've already mentioned Tranmere and Mansfield hitting some form.

Another team to throw in the mix is Sutton who did a job on us at Sixfields and looked mighty impressive when doing so. They travel to Stevenage on Saturday and after that five of their next six games are at home, they have a decent home record so could put quite a few points on the board. Two of those home games are against us and FGR.

Brave words GPC; for instance FGR may loose a player or two in the transfer window, like us they can have a bobble or two.  So can Mansfield and others too.  As pointed out by some on here we are half way through the season so all to play for. The biggest blow that JB has suffered is the loss of Etete and recent signing Zimba may well have been a back up for Etete. Am not too worried about other teams; if we can maintain our defensive ability and modest improvement in midfield and up front we should in my opinion hold out own in the Auto's.

Whilst I agree with the concern on Sutton (although I think our defeat to them was more about our terrible performance on the day), it is more than slightly embarrassing that the two team mentioned are such small clubs with little history and pathetic support - the only slight relief is at least they are not joined in performance by Salford. That aside I think we still have a chance on a 2nd or 3rd spot but playoff a more likely outcome if the squad stays largely as is.

I personally don't understand this small team big team thing based on history and support. I would take 1000 Suttons, Harrogates etc with a small but passionate fan base over a Chelsea, Man City etc with thousands and thousands of bandwagon jumpers.
