How many times have we seen this "Contract talks put on back burner " and how many times have we actually re signed the player ? Not very often in my memory.

Not sure, I cannot recall, but achieving promotion might help in the contract negotiating for this season? But then again, has it previously?
Mt thoughts on the three of them?
Horsfall - I'll be surprised if he is here next season, I believe that he is a better footballer and prospect than Charlie Goode.
Roberts - He wasn't that well thought of at Walsall?  He's been the most consistent keeper we've had for a while. If he gets a better offer, especially higher up, I'd be surprised if he doesn't go.
McWilliams - He's done his apprenticeship here and served us well, at 24 (in August) it's a good opportunity for him to see how far up the football ladder he can get.

To be honest, I wouldn't plan on any of them being with us come August.  Wink

Roberts is a weird one...I'm sure we paid a nominal fee for him & it states "initial" one year contract, so you would think (hope!) the club put an extension (in the clubs favour) into his contract, yet we've not had clarification that this is the case...

Northampton Town have signed goalkeeper Liam Roberts in a transfer from Walsall.

The imposing 26 year old Roberts has signed an initial one year contract at Sixfields.

I’m sure by now with Koiki and Sowerby having their extensions triggered, if Roberts had one then his would have been triggered too.

it could be the extension is in Roberts favour. I remember a few years ago a player had a an extension in their favour if they played X number of games but the club managed to pursuade the player not to trigger the extension  (was it Matt Taylor?)

Speculation, but it could be that he can leave but we will still be entitled to a transfer fee for him?
Don't quote me, I don't believe that any of us know for sure.  Wink

When Koiki had his option triggered for another season I said that maybe we had offered him another 2 seasons, as we did with Sam, but he was reluctant to commit and therefore we triggered the 1 year option. Could be a similar situation and we have offered Roberts another 2 years (it would be silly to only offer 1 year) and if he does not commit if the club has an option of another year it will then be triggered.

I hope all three (Roberts, McWilliams and Horsfall) stay but in reality if you are the player and ambitious what can the club do.  The players in question have done their part by performing at a high level all season so maybe they deserve better if we don't go up?

The only thing I think players should also consider, but most don't, is the reason behind why they have performed at such a high level this season as opposed to maybe previously in their career.  There is a lot to be said about working under a manager that can improve you and get the best out of you and the grass isn't always greener as many have found out to their cost.

I hope all three stay especially if we go up as I think they all will benefit from the coaching and environment that is being created and has got the best out of them this year.  You have to say in Roberts specifically what a difference a good keeper can make to a team.

Could be that it applies unless a championship team or named big L1 teams want him, they they offer him a specific % more than we can, that sort of thing. I certainly would negotiate some clauses that meant if a big club wanted me I could leave or if someone wanted to pay me twice as much etc. If the statement that one year was his decision then either he / his agent know what they are doing. Hope he stays though!
