And a price worth paying. Nobody is exempt from illness.
Are you willing to sacrifice 20% of your pension money to properly fund the NHS? I very much doubt it if push comes to shove, another socialist hypocrite.

I'd pay whatever was required. Money isn't a lot of good to you when you're dead.

I'm not sure of the logic here when referring to pension money - given statistically the health care cost are heavily weighed towards the elderly the chances whatever scheme (NI or Insurance) up to retirement age you are likely to have paid in more than you have received - however your figure does perhaps more accurately describe the true cost of health care - and its a figure many people do not recognise or one successive governments refuse to grasp the nettle on Whilst I'm impressed with Melly's description of the Australian Health Care system there is no way what he is paying covers the true cost of cradle to grave lifetime health costs and clearly his health service is getting additional revenue, presumably from .....but I do have to ask you so obsessed with Woke and Socialists and it gets threaded into most of your comments ? - I'm guessing given your age that your business success hasn't just started and you probably were doing ok under some of the Blair/Brown years

I wouldn't go too OTT on how great both NHS or private healthcare is these days. My latest experience... Thought I'd go NHS as need to try a different approach on a long standing issue. After filling in a form for them to decide if I was worthy of an appointment, they offered me one with a physio. 8:50am on Monday...they cancelled it at 8:15am. Rebooked for 8:10am on Tuesday, cancelled at 8:00am when I was sitting outside. "Any idea when I should rebook it for?"....."no, probably best to try next week."
Onto BUPA. Live video call with physio (via eMed), booked within 10 minutes. 30 minute chat and referral report completed within 5 minutes. P.S. eMed is a great service if you want to talk to a GP on video/phone, think it is about £250 a year in isolation. Back to BUPA...they seem to have eliminated the ability to speak to a human. Waited for 40 minutes to talk to a bot and then person. The agent isn't allowed to access the referral? So pretty much had to describe the issue again, which took 30 mins but would have taken 2 mins on the phone. Gave me the authorisation number and a list of consultants. Two of them were dead links and finally found one with an appointment at the end of Feb.
It took all afternoon anyway.

Witch hunt or not Manny, from my straw poll I’m guessing a lot of people don’t have open access to an NHS dentist anymore. I’ve been with mine for 30 years and didn’t realise how bad it was. I do know that mine is a lot more reasonable than most on the private fees.

My understanding is the private care is fine if you have a short term illness or anything that requires a quick fix. If it's more complicated, long term or anything that's basically expensive then you turn to the NHS.

Here you go to the GP and they will recommend a few consultants based on where there consulting rooms are based. You get a referral letter phone them up and your healthcare provider picks up the tab, simple. The health care provider will pay a fixed predetermined rate for the procedure. (The AMA set the rate). The top 10% of chaps can get away with charging a bit more and you have to bridge the gap if you want one of those. I’ve used one, it’s a long story, but supposedly the best orthopaedic surgeon in Melbourne and for something like knee surgery it cost an extra $600 (£300) all up. Still cheaper than NI. To answer Pete’s point, he’s right, the government subsidies a fair chunk through Medicare, so your health insurance provider doesn’t cover the whole cost, the government chips in. It’s all done behind the scenes though.

Anyway, there’s a story about the above. You know how when they are about to put you under, they always seem to engage in some inane chat. Well whilst the surgeon was sharpening his machete he says “you never did say, how come you got referred to me?”. So I said “I asked my GP who was the best orthopaedic surgeon in Victoria. Anyway, they were too busy so I ended up with you.” At that point I was just going under and the anaesthetist said “you’re the bravest patient we’ve ever had”.

There must be some stiff competition for that prize. Perhaps a whole new thread for it.

No sorry, that's not as daft as your previous comment, should have left it there while you were at the summit. By the way, some of us have made it this far and that can't now be taken away. Nobody knows whether you will though obviousdly we all hope you do, then maybe you might learn something.

I don't dislike them, though I prefer more of a challenge.
