A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century.[1] Originally a phrase (the common-wealth or the common wealth – echoed in the modern synonym "public wealth"), it comes from the old meaning of "wealth", which is "well-being", and is itself a loose translation of the Latin res publica.[2] The term literally meant "common well-being". In the 17th century, the definition of "commonwealth" expanded from its original sense of "public welfare" or "commonweal" to mean "a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people; a republic or democratic state".[3][4]

Why do they call it the Commonwealth. No one has anything in common and certainly no wealth.
And if the Empire ended with Hong Kong going to China, why do they still hand out gongs like the MBE, CBE, OBE, and in 2012 why did they re introduce the BEM?

The British Empire, the biggest empire in history, still lives on in the shape of Australia and Canada, both sovereign territory.

The Constitution Act, 1982 patriated the British North America Act, 1867 to Canada , thus ending any Canadian dependence on the Parliament of Westminster and further defining its complete independence.

As far as im aware the list is of overseas territories is,
Cayman Islands The Falklands Islands Gibralter Dhekelia and Akortiri ( Cyprus) Bermuda Angullia British Indian Ocean Territory British Antarctic Territory British Virgin Islands Tristan Ascension St Helena South Georgia Turks and Caicos island Pitcairn Island Monserrat Might have missed a couple.
Still quite a list for a small Country like the UK.
Then there's the Commonwealth which is of course mainly made up of former parts of the Empire. Thats why they still hand out Empire Medals, as it didnt end with the return of Hong Kong

Although to be fair, I think that the Yanks value Diego Garcia far more highly than we do. After all, didnt they secretly stash away MH370 there?

We seized the islands, displaced the people, and are now making amends and rightly so. Don't see what's stupid about that. Days of empire are over.

In terms of significant strategic importance the base is guaranteed for another 99 years minimum. Surely the hope is humanity will move forward in that time and the first most basic step in that direction is returning the islands which were taken as part of our vile colonial past.

Do you really think that, humanity is moving forward? If anything, it seems to have engaged reverse gear just lately.

Here on Planet Earth there are currently 2 wars going on, both about who owns what bits of it. If the human race is to survive and move forward then eventually territorial rights will need to become a thing of the past. We are currently nowhere near the intellectual capacity or emotional maturity to achieve such a goal at present, and it will probably be our downfall.
