If we're looking for pointless answers, how about Corrazin's free kick against Stoke.

From this season, Sowerby as previously mentioned, Hondermarck's rocket and Sam's at Tranmere which calmed some early nerves and showed great technique.

From many moons ago in our season in the top flight I always remember George Hudson's goal at home to Leeds. A long punt from our 'keeper into the opposition half which Jack Charlton came to meet but completely misjudged it as it bounced over his head, Hudson who had turned to run towards the Leeds goal latched onto the ball and took it on to slot it past Gary Sprake in the Leeds goal.

Alan Starling's penalty (our goalkeeper at the time for the young'uns amongst you) in a 5-2 win over Hartlepool in our 1975-76 promotion season under Bill Dodgin.

My pointless answer would be Morrys Scott away to Port Vale in the Auto Windscreens / Leyland DAF / not sure what it was called Trophy in the early 90s. Could barely see it through the mist, but fully represented our struggles at the time. So, iconic.

So there is me now thinking whatever happened to Morrys Scott? Well after leaving us he dropped into Welsh football, not exactly setting it alight with record breaking goal tallies, but he did get to play in Europe, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup for Barry Town. So an iconic player as well as an iconic goal.

I wonder how many of our other ex players have gone on to play in European competitions....... Another thread for another day.

A few to consider :
Toney at Dagenham
Parrish at Cardiff
Holmes at Stevenage / Luton

there is only one John Frain though

great thread!

How's about...

Martin Aldridge (RIP) - first game at Sixfields v Barnet.
Kelvin Wilkin - after (18 seconds?) in the game that was meant to be the farewell match at the Ceynty Greynd.
Grayson v Chesterfield with his famous 'snow angel' celebration.
Whoosh Stevie Terry v York - in a game which kicked orf the fundraising to save the club. Never scored from another freekick after that I don't think!

Tony Mahoney Away at Maine Road League Cup 1981

Good shout. Remember it well and being shepherded down the Coronation Street style streets by the police after the game while being hounded by the Man City fans.

I've looked in my crystal ball and our most iconic goal has not yet been scored but will be by somebody called Hylton and probably a tap in from 3 yards.

There’s been many better goals in my lifetime but for sheer unadulterated joy it has to be John Frain at Wembley or Osman at Anfield, which included a pen from a much younger Jacobs.

All in all THE most iconic goal MUST be John Frain. The first and currently only* time we have won at Wembley.

Nothing else comes close.

Edit: turns out we have won there again, but I had forgotten about it on account of not being there.

Except for the second time when we won at Wembley...

Although granted the "we" was Keith Curle, his squad Tim Oglethorpe and Pete Walton!

We needed to win to preserve league status. We hadn’t won away all season and we were playing a side who needed to win to get promoted. Despite being at the bottom of the league our goalkeeper was player of the season. We were 2-0 down at half time and dead and buried. The only reason everyone stayed for the second half was to watch our final minutes as a league club. What came next defied belief, never have I gone from so low to so high in such a short space of time. Pat Gavin’s “arse of god” goal is head and shoulders the most iconic goal in our club’s history, nothing else comes close.

Oh yes, I had forgotten about that win.

Odd isn't it, the Atkins victory is up there ahead of getting married and the birth of my children, whilst the Curle victory had gone from my mind. The difference being there makes.

Or Holton's hat 'trick on his first appearance for the Cobbs v Crystal Palace(a) back in 1961

Phil Chard's 25 yarder at Wolves, in off the bar and his own goal from the half way line at Lincoln both in Carrs championship winning season.

Pointless answers (maybe)....
Wayne Williams cross-cum-shot versus Wolves 1988
Greg Campbell volley versus Walsall in a 5-0 Friday night rout circa 1991
