The Football Governance Bill passed its first test yesterday. A significant number of clubs especially in the Championship are going to probably off load players as a result. At the very least they need to consider what they are committing to in terms of budget. If players wage demands are too high they will struggle to get a club, consequently football and its budgets are probably about to be turned on its head. If we over commit now, it is likely we will be forced to reset later, and some of these clubs are potentially facing a significant challenge in the near future. Budgets will probably have less impact as the availability of quality players will probably increase. The net result will be that football will be more competitive and less affected by budgets and the falsely elevated position of clubs. I don’t think people generally have grasped the implications of what’s coming if this goes all the way. https://www.pinsentmasons.com/out-law/news/football-governance-bill-passes-first-hurdle

Derby budget this season was apparently £17m!
Against an operating loss of 10 million. If true given the impending new rules they would eventually have to off load circa 70% of the squad by salary expenditure. Good luck with that.

I am astonished at the self pitying comments on our chances next season. Lord Melbourne has alerted us to a situation to a Government Inspired ' The Football Governance Bill'. With our Budget we may prosper as a Club from it, especially from those smug Clubs overloaded with players and obscene salaries! Whatever you lefties think about the Tories they maybe our salvation in the coming season. What do think Manny? Boris bites back.

As Melly points out, with the new bill on the horizon, no one quite knows how things are going to look, how rigorously it's going to be enforced etc. It would appear that regardless of people's ambitions, this year at least there is something to be said for keeping your powder dry, invest sensibly with a view to survival in L1 and then, if you are going to invest more in the playing side of things to push on, do so the following year when it's more of a level playing field and we hopefully have a higher turnover to base a rule-compliant budget on thanks to the additional hospitality in the completed East Stand.
Personally, I think we're very much still in an establishing ourselves phase and any thoughts of really kicking on next year, while appealing, are pretty unrealistic.

The league is going to be even harder next season
We've the smallest budget, a manager whose worked miracles and just lost two players that were likely difference in a lot of games.
I'd say avoiding relegation is just being realistic.

It just depends on how owners view it. Using the term realistic, are all of these owners going to continue to pour money into these clubs whilst there’s a risk they will have to reduce their budget by more than half and the value of the players they are buying will crash through the floor. This may be compounded by having to pay off long term contracts on players just to comply with the legislation. How long will they continue on this path with the sword of Damocles hanging over their head? I will guarantee there are some very nervous owners out there ATM. I’m sure some will blindly carry on, but some won’t. With all this uncertainty around only a fool would predict anything with a degree of confidence. Are we struggling or are we actually in a position of strength? I accept that won’t be a popular concept for some, but nevertheless a possibility. For example, leaving to one side sponsorship given the attendance figures Peterborough would have had a playing budget not too dissimilar to ours, but they need to service a 25million debt. Depending on how this plays out, I would suggest it may end up with them struggling to compete with us. https://www.transfermarkt.com/peterborough-united/besucherzahlenentwicklung/verein/1072

Anyway. Apparently if you're a fan you can't have ambitions for your club Of course you can as ambition is a personal thing and very different to expectation. It’s fine for someone to have the ambition of getting promoted or if they are a complete masochist they can have the ambition for the club to lose every game.

So if we stay up next season, it's down to Boris Johnson? That's one hell of a spin Evers. Dominic Cummings would be proud of you.

I totally agree. I was just alluding to what I was told by Davcob when I said my ambition was to see us in the Championship in an earlier thread and was patronisingly told "Supporters can't have ambitions about their teams, only managers and owners can."

This is an hilarious site. Just look at the valuations given to our players. It has Sam Sherring valued at £400K as our most saleable asset and then Louis Appere valued at £300K just above Patrick Brough and Sam Hoskins on £275K.

I’m just listening to talk sport and they have the Mansfield owner on talking about our promotion. Why do we never get any coverage They should surely have DB and KT on regards our unbelievable achievement of staying up and our plans to try and stay up next season.

To be fair, they did invite 'any' mid table League One Chair(s) or Managers to give them a call to discuss their recent season. I believe that there was only a non league manager who did.
