Eurovision is quite a thing in our house because my son is obsessed by it. Personally I've no interest in the music but I do quite like watching the voting because, despite the oft quoted mantra about it not being political, the voting is at least 70% politically and ideologically motivated.

A case in point was last night where Israel were polling badly from the juries (with every point they were given soundly booed by the audience) but surged to the top when their public votes were revealed.

This caused much consternation in our living room with an outraged rant from my son that it's because most people are bigots who want to see Muslims killed (along with some bizarre conspiracy theory about Israel giving out free SIM cards in other countries in return for votes, but to be fair he'd had a few by then)

It's easy to account for the jury voting; they are mostly comprised of artsy fartsy Guardianista types who will always lean in one way.

The public voting is more interesting though and I'm intrigued by what the real motivations were.

Of course, it could have been apolitical and people just liked the song. (I can't comment on this as I was watching the Dongs get humiliated in the other room until the voting started. My son said it was rubbish but I suspect there were some blinkers on there as he's also one of the aforementioned Guardianista types)

It's also possible it was a political decision to show approval for Israel's actions in Gaza (I can't see it, but it's possible)

It could have been sympathy for a young girl who was clearly in a very difficult and unpleasant position.

Or it might have been a reflexive kickback to all the furore and protests in the build up. People don't like being told what they should think and reacted as a two finger salute to the political hijacking of a music competition.

It's likely to be a bit of all these, but personally I think it's predominantly a mixture of the last two.

So am I just overly optimistic about what motivates people or are there lots of bigots out there? Or has everyone been given a free SIM card...?

What do you guys think?

I couldn't give a monkeys about Euro vision myself, it tends to not be my type of music, but I do like the idea of people dressing up and enjoying themselves. So any excuse for a party really.

The whole thing has sunk lower and lower since the days of Terry Wogan. It is now little more than a pantomime with goodies and baddies. A circus freak show in all but name.
And the voting is most certainly political, and is the reason why I do not watch it anymore. There have been a few "characters" to say the least, who live for their Andy Warhol moment.
I like to think that in the UK we have moved on from being offended by nil points, although my eastern european site labourers lap it up. Its the TV highlight of their year.

Me neither!  It was more a question about the surrounding motivations than the competition.

When the winner came out to do their song at the end I lasted about 30 seconds before saying "Not for me!" and going outside to see if I could see the Northern Lights again.

Eurovision has never been for me so wasn't watching yesterday but as you describe it can only think you're correct that she would have got the sympathy vote for the public reaction towards her together with a knee jerk vote the other way from the furore.
Of course it could just have been a good song unrecognised by the 'experts'.

Not that I give a toss about it, but of course eurovision is political and always has been since israel was allowed to enter, last time I looked at a map it is nowhere near Europe. The Krauts pushed to have them in so they could do some more apologetic hand wringing.

Well at least Australia was not in it this year as they have been for the past several years - Cannot get much further away.

Personally (and despite a Swiss win) I think its an awful competition - to be a contestant it seems you have to be a oddball and the voting is so so political.

However, and as much as Israel‘s totally disproportional action in Gaza disgusts me the booing of the Israeli contestant shows the worst of human behavious - the action of the IDF is hardly her fault, those booing have no knowledge of her views and are simply showing ignorance and a deeply unpleasent side to human nature.

Latest polling suggesting 17% of the UK population were sympathetic to Israel in the conflict, 28% for Palestine, and the rest for neither/don't know. So, lets take aside that some people wouldnt vote politically... if you were pro israel you had one country to vote for, and if you were pro palestine you'd have 35 countries splitting that element of the vote. So, its actually pretty likely that Israel would be attracting more votes than other competitors.

17% of a country is enough of a bloc to win if the other 83% is split between 35 others.

Eurovision is a freak show, the start of social breakdown much like what happened in the last days of the Roman Empire.

Despite the politics of it all, usually the best song does win, and this was actually a very good song. The range of the singer and being able to sing it perfectly while they performed it like that with the gravity defying platform. It was great.

I made exactly the same point to a friend. This was happening as tanks were rolling across the fields of Europe.
You can understand why some countries think the West decadent, with a soft underbelly.

Whether it's a freakshow, decadent, or the start of the fall of the Roman empire. It's a completely irrellevant, pointless waste of time that should be ignored. Any band/artist with any credibility wouldn't have anything to do with it and it should be left to idiots(allegedly) like Scott Mills etc, who are clueless when it comes to decent music. Why do we need a charade like this to establish the best song in Europe, when thousands of songs/albums are released every year that are on a different planet to any of that pointless shīte. Fūck off. Needless to say, I don't like it.

Slightly less odd balls than on Eurovision but Talent? - the completely unfunny Ant and Dec fawning over pathetically poor acts - if this is the cream of British talent I despair.............

Something juicy, they get everywhere - Christ even when I turn on the TV to pay respects to our late queen and the gormless pair are sitting in the Abbey pulling strange faces.

I don't mind BGT (on fast forward to avoid the judges) but it needs a rebrand to 'worldwide talent'. We can't 'own' acts being flown in by ITV from the US and Japan who have failed on other versions of the show.
