Woke will never die, I still don't understand why people are afraid of knowing right from wrong, injustice, prejudice, sexism, the misuse of power? Woke to me is an innate sense of knowing... Nothing more.

Regarding politicians;

When I read Economics at Newcastle University, there were about 3 times as many reading Economics & Politics and there were about 4 times as many reading Economics & Accountancy). 35 students were in my cohort at the beginning of the degree and 30 completed it (one was escorted out of the Examination Centre during Finals holding one of the standard texts under his arm - caught cheating).

The Politics students were always the most involved in Seminars, arguing about everything, attending Demos (remember Barclays Bank & South Africa ?), living the life, failing to return copies of the most significant articles in Journals (the Internet was decades away) - Milton Friedman (leading light of the Chicago School of Economics) on Monetarism was something of a pantomime villain to the invariably left leaning Politics mob. The Accountancy students were the most studious and quietest during discussions.

Conclusion - Politics is for the endlessly argumentative. Life is much more fun if you follow your interests - Music, History, Golf, Football, Fishing, whatever. Something you enjoy.

I always smile when I hear Milton Friedman's name. When I did economics at A-level, in the very first lesson our teacher made a joke about not getting Milton Friedman and John Maynard Keynes mixed up, otherwise you'd end up with Milton Keynes.

For the next 2 years, every single time he asked something along the lines of "and whose theory is that?" you could guarantee someone would shout out "Milton Keynes!" The first few weeks he found it funny. After that he got more and more angry every time someone said it....

That might go some way to accounting for why thar was the only exam I've ever failed (I did go on to do well in a much higher level economics module as part of my degree, so it shows what a difference it makes when you are listening rather than pìssing about! )

In theory that all sounds great. One issue for me especially with the younger generation is it seems less about living a fulfilling life and more about curating what they believe or have been told is one on social media. It’s about being seen at a protest you have been told to go to rather than actually trying to understand both perspectives of an issue and drawing your own conclusions.

Morality is very rarely cut and dried. Algorithms and echo chambers push people to have strong opinions on the fringes, attacking each other rather than looking for common ground. Does woke ‘cancel culture’ work? Is it going to make people change their mind, or more likely dig their heels in?. I mostly stand on the left on most issues but I find woke culture doesn’t help the cause, I mean could the term ‘woke’ sound any more patronising!?.

I don’t think “woke” is about cancel culture, there’s enough of that on both sides of the political spectrum. To me, as stated, it’s knowing right from wrong. There are many definitions of woke, but I’m happy with mine 👍

There is absolutely no definition of woke. Regardless of the dictionaries attempt at it. Woke is quoted by all of us based on our preferences/bias. Whether conscious or unconscious..
