Well 2 days after the euros Soutjgate has resigned I appreciate everything he did but time was right for him to go
Big question is who is next
I'd like to see Klopp but can't see that so realistically I'd go for Eddie Howe if we want a English person

Tough act to follow. Anything short of winning the World Cup isn’t really an improvement….unless people are content with the football being a bit prettier.

Gareth did as well as we could have expected. He'll probably get offered a job at one of his former clubs in due course, not be particularly successful (not convinced he inspires lads not already very self motivated) and then drift out of the game. He might be a good manager for the England Women's team.
Klopp is the obvious choice for replacement. Probably a good move for him too (experience before the ultimate job of Germany manager and a rest from club management if he still needs that). After Liverpool and their manic, needy supporters managing England will be far easier on the mind.
I think most sensible people accept that England have potential that has still not been realised and the draw at the Euros was in our favour and the performances not that great.
First job - meet Kane and grasp the real nature and prognosis of/for his issues.

He should have gone after the Croatia game in 2018. The writing was on the wall during that 'performance', for what the next six (or however many it would be) years would be like, which proved to be true. Six years wasted.

I wrote on facebook Sunday night (admittedly after a fair foo!!) that my biggest frustration on Sunday was not dealing with the threat that Williams posed. I called it after less than 5 minutes, said to my lad before the game started that he was the player I most feared. Strangely, this hasn't been picked up once by any pundit since (that I've seen). In the first 10 minutes he received the ball 3 or 4 times, each time in acres of space. Yeah, last ditch defending dealt with it each time BUT it was only going to be a matter of time given the amount of space he was being allowed before we paid the price. Which is precisely what happened for their first goal. Southgate once again not tweaking things during a match before its too late. The game you mention. Half time 1-0 up from an early Tripper goal. 3 forwards being starved of the ball, the midfield totally overwhelmed with Modric running the show. 'We' all said at half time that evening that he should take one of his forwards off and bolster the midfield. Sometimes going backwards enables you to go forwards... ...he did nothing, as per. Until they equalised. Rinse and repeat several times since then... I cite these two examples (tactically) because neither has anything to do with how passive we set ourselves up. How we retreat when we go a goal ahead etc. More so not dealing with situations that happen during a match. That has been my biggest issue with Southgate but then again I understand I am a mere mortal sat on my armchair spouting crap most of the time! So Im rather blaze about it, apart from when its actually happening! But that's what most of us do ha ha. Otherwise there wouldn't be forums like this

Given the recent FA record of promotion, then it will be Lee Carsley. And to people suggesting the likes of Klopp, or Eddie Howe, or Poch, why would anybody want to assume a role where anything less than victory in the next World Cup or Euros, is considered a failure? Given that the next Euros is UK/Ireland, then the pressure to succeed will be immense. And these people have to want the job in the first place. Money aint everything. At club level is one thing, but at international level the s*** comes at you from every direction.

It's bizarre. People look back through rose tinted specs at Sir Bobby Robson. I think we'll look back at the success of Southgate in a much more tangible way. By far the most successful manager in most of our lifetimes. If we get some of the names being bandied around, we'll have a fair few years of 're-building' by which time the likes of Foden will have retired.

I reckon it will be Sean Dyche.
Or Chris Wilder.

Yeh good riddance, who wants a successful manager, let's get back to losing in the quarter finals then the Country can get back to full blown moaning, this getting to semi finals and finals is quite boring now.

Get Gary Lineker in, he thinks he has the answer to everything football related or not. Surprised he is not our new Prime Minister.

I'd be more than happy to have Gary Lineker as Head of State. Can't see the Scots, Welsh, Northern Irish or Comrade Manny being quite so keen. Him or Carol Vorderman. Whilst I am at it (winding up or or two of my regular playmates on here) is now the time to have our first female manager of the England men's team? Somebody with experience of winning trophies......... 🍿

Lets get on with winning something. We assemble (arguably) the most expensive per player and per position squads in the world. And what does he do. Leaves them on the bench, or plays them out of position. When we do get an equaliser against the Spanish and start to threaten them. He starts gesturing to them to stick to there positions and calm down. Inviting them straight back on to us. 40 million quid for nothing. Not a bad return is it? FOR HIM. If he's that good, he'll prove it at league level. And the top teams will be crying out for him. I've got a not too sneaky feeling, he will amount to sweet FA.

Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Lee Carsley current bookies favourites in that order.
I wouldn't mind seeing what Pep could do with them but other than that anyone will do amazingly well to improve on Southgate's record. I'd probably choose Howe out of the names in the frame.

I am absolutely gutted with how easy we've had it the last two Euros. I'll be amazed if we get another opportunity like these two to get us some trophies on board. He should have gone after the Italy game - we were man for man better, a goal up dominating. All Italy had was the tactical nous of Mancini.
The Qatar world cup was frustratingly when I had the most faith in Southgate. He dropped the players that needed dropping mid tournament (Mount and Sterling), really played to our strengths and we went toe to toe with a top France side. With a different ref, we'd have probably won that game.
Fast forward to 2024 - we have Bellingham and Foden in our starting 11 at the absolute top of their games and we have absolutely no idea how we'll play them together. No plan, nothing. 2 years of friendlies and I'm not sure they've even started games together. Zero identity and next to no cohesion. Watching Spain players pass it out from the back and pinging it around us was criminal in comparison to our defenders (and Rice) hiding from the ball when we had it deep. Our talented players were so stifled as a result. I'd like to think the FA will bring in Carsley, Howe, Potter and Poch for interviews and ask them to give a presentation on precisely how they intend to get Foden and Bellingham on the pitch together because I can't handle another 2-3 tournaments of Gerrard/Lampard comparisons.
Howe would be my preference purely because I like his story from the bottom of the league all the way to international glory. Plus he's a legit top quality manager.

In the ten minutes after our goal, we didn't touch the ball in the Spanish half. Just before Spain scored their second, he was about to bring on Gallagher and Trippier, instead of 'going for it' and making a proactive change, which is a perfect example of how he has managed/planned during his tenure. With the players we had available, he should have been more proactive, we may have been knocked out earlier or could have gone on and won a couple of trophies, we'll never know but it would have been a lot more exciting than what we've had to endure.
