Ref got most of the bookings right Baldwin kicking the ball away after ref had awarded a corner, players know they are going to get booked for this and still they do it. Roberts 1st yellow for a clumsy challenge which most refs would have given, 2nd yellow was sheer stupidity and again for knocking the ball away with his hand. Guinness-Walker for kicking out at an opponent, he had done this earlier and escaped so lucky to also not be sent off. Guthrie not clear why he got a yellow but imagine it was for comments to the ref. McGeehan is the only yellow I would contest and now he is 1 away from a suspension, not sure why he gets so many playing in his position. I am not saying the ref had a good game but any other ref would have given the majority of the yellows particularly when players are silly and leave him no choice. JB must be infuriated by some of these.
TBH, I have a similar opinion of all of those incidents. Baldwin kicking the ball away is in the subjective opinion of the referee, who was a lot closer, an idiotic action by any player, they know the consequences. The Roberts second yellow was another idiotic action by the player. Guthrie was giving it verbals to the Referee for most of the game (as he normally does), he must have overstepped it when G-W got himself booked, also an idiotic action by G-W. I wasn't sure about McGeehan caution either, it obviously looked worse from the Referee's position? Brady's customary yellow was for something he said or indicated by his actions, he should have learnt by now! There is one common denominator and it's not the Officials. He also correctly booked their keeper for booting the ball downfield, therefore delaying the restart. I thought that the Official had a decent game, getting the majority of decisions correct.

Agree with this! I guess frustration amongst fans sets in because we don't see this sort of thing every week, and by the letter of the law its the more lenient referees who are getting things wrong rather than ones like last night who are sticklers for the rules. Players and managers really need to up their games.... stop booting the ball away, stop moaning about everything, stop falling down with minimal or no contact, stop with the petulance, cut out the ill discipline because every now and then we will fall foul of the officials like we did last night. At the end of the day the match officials should be barely noticable, but more often than not they are...because of the actions of the players.

I think most people would rather see the more lenient referees who let the game flow, don't make it all about them and don't book/ send players off for all and sundry. There were, I think, around 10 bookings last night and it wasn't in any way a dirty game. Have a look at the comments on the BBC report. Even the Lincoln Fans thought the ref was shocking and a Mansfield fan.

When ever either side was building momentum he stopped the game unnecessarily, and this encouraged the actions of the players. McGeehan jumped for a header and didn't touch the player who went down and the ref blew for it, a couple of minutes later Baldwin went down clutching his face after being barley touched. Both sets of players became increasingly frustrated at his decisions and constant stopping the game over nonsense. He was the catalyst that turned it into a 10 card game, even if the majority of the incidents deserved cards taken in isolation.

Without repeating too much i agree most of the cards were technically correct but at the same time harsh and in order to stay consistent puts pressure on the ref hence the tally for the game - isometimes a word to the wise cools the situation and makes for a better game Interesting to hear Deepcut's comments (who seems to know a thing or two about officiating) - why do so many cases of blatant shirt pulling and holding escape any penalty.

In practical terms how does a lenient referee work? There is always going to be debate. Intimately they’re give a set of rules to follow and the guy last night followed them.

Exactly, it's not the Officials fault if he keeps blowing his whistle and/or pulling out his cards. Players need to up their game, unfortunately it appears that ours reflect the actions and the examples of our Manager. People used to complain about Charles Breakspear, but he was similar, applying the Law correctly when others didn't. He was/is the consistent Official that everyone asks for, the others not necessarily so.

I have to say I find your posts on these subjects a bit annoying DC. I tend to disagree with some of the content, yet find the comments impossible to argue against at the same time.

In a nutshell. It might be a good close season or international weekend break job for all players to read The Laws of the Game. Maybe the supporters could do as well.

I think maybe the expectations of refs is higher than its ever been, the things is it boils down to consistency across the EFL with refs, we saw Stockport county's captain try to boot the ball away and stop the game which he did by hitting AK in the nuts, that was overlooked / missed by he ref and in front of the lino, was what Roberts did any different, it was the same outcome, stopping the restart. The Penalty at Stockport similar this week at Lincoln on us nothing given they score.
Its like the time wasting and players walking up the line with a throw in and grappling in the area, give a free kick / booking everytime it happens even in the first 1minute it will stop it.
I agree about Lincoln pretty much card given was easily avoidable but not being stupid, apart from Roberts first which was never a yellow.
