Is it time to abandon this, I cannot think of one occasion when it has led to a goal

How about just abandon Pinnock when all others are fit.

I'm not a fan of long throws as a tactic. Especially when it is done by the guy who can probably put in the best cross, if the ball is thrown to him.

The lad Licorish-Mullings has a throw on him.  A sort of gen Z  Ben Tozer.
Anyway Pinnock has had his day, its time to freshen up.

why waste time with a short throw, couple of touches, get closed down etc - pick it up, throw it in to the box unchallenged.

easy - if you have the weapon why wouldnt you use it.

be like having a 150mph serve in tennis and serving underarm all the time

The trouble with a long throw verses a cross is that a cross can be whipped in. Very often a long throw is reliant on someone winning a flick on or has lost any pace by the time it reaches the danger area. If you are a really tall team who are dominant in the air, with someone who can throw it in with pace it is a good approach. If that was the case we would have scored a few goals from them by now.

That depends what you mean by work.
If it's to get the ball into the box then it works every time, it's then up to others to make a goal out of it.

If we have a long throw expert available use him.Pinnock has had a few better games recently and if he plays well we generally get a point or two . That goal he scored against Brum makes him a hero for me. Was there and so where many others.

Its the one time Eaves is guaranteed to be in the box rather than coming deep or wrestling someone off the ball somewhere.

I thought he was doing it to try and get a goal. And because we've never scored from one, perhaps a fresh approach might help. How many points do we get for throwing the ball a long way?

I would abandon it because it hasn't worked for 3 + seasons.

The trouble is Evers, the only thing that he is consistent about, is his lack of injuries.  He has been below par, for the last 12 months, and a last minute one-off against Brum, or a last minute fluke against Boro is not enough. Still, if it got you excited at your age, thats good enough.  Grin

Unfortunately it's not a bullet like penetrating long throw - it's a slow high ball which gives central defenders ample time to judge an interception. As previously mentioned on his day Pinnock's crosses are much more effective.

Why would you use it EVERY SINGLE TIME though? No variation to anything, the opponents know what is coming and plan for it pre match and expect it during the game. Its a good weapon to use now and then but its too predictable!
