Assuming we've not all been blown away by Storm Eowyn, we make the short 61 mile trip down to Wycombe to face the high-flying Chairboys. This is the first of back-to-back away games at Wanderers with Bolton to follow on Tuesday and also strangely back-to-back games against teams who don't have a permanent manager at the moment.
Its now just over 30 years since Wycombe entered the League after many years in the Isthmian League and Conference. They were promoted in their first season in the League and then spent 10 seasons at the League 1 level. They have bobbed around the bottom two divisions since but after promotion in 2018 they were promoted again in 2020 to the Championship. A short lived seat at the higher table as they were relegated after a year and now are hoping to win promotion for a second time. Backed by Mikheil Lomtadze, a Kazak billionaire, they are making waves in the transfer market having signed seven players this month alone.
Sitting second in the table at the moment with 16 wins and 54 points from 26 games they are in decent shape. Only 7 of those wins have come at home though, Huddersfield and Birmingham the only teams to leave Adams Park with three points this season. After 11 consecutive wins in all competitions they hit a bit of a rocky patch picking up just 3 wins in the next 10 games, but they seem to be back on the right path again after a home win over Championship Portsmouth in the FA Cup followed by last weeks win at Field Mill over Mansfield. They have a fourth round trip to Preston in the Cup to look forward to.
Richard Kone is the standout performer this season, he's hit 17 goals in all competitions (14 league) and was today the subject of a transfer bid from Luton, the offer was rejected by Wycombe. Fred Onyedinma, who coincidentally joined from Luton in the summer, has bagged six goals for himself. Wycombes ranks have been bolstered this week by 10 goal Chesterfield striker James Berry and Alex Lowry from Rangers. Other interesting incomings are Magnus Westergaard, a Danish midfielder in from Viborg and Anders Hagelskjaer a Danish defender in from Molde.
A lot of the transfer activity is happening despite the departure of manager Matt Bloomfield. The former Wanderers stalwart has upped sticks and moved to Luton after 52 wins in 108 games for Wycombe. Sam Grace is in temporary charge of the side, the clubs development coach oversaw that win at Mansfield last week.
Head to head over the years the majoirity of results have been draws, 15 of them against 13 wins for Wycombe and nine for Cobblers. Wycombe have already beaten us twice this season, a first round League Cup 2-0 win was followed up a month later by a 2-1 result at Sixfields, Daniel Udoh scoring in both games for Wycombe. They also did the double over us last season (1-0 at Sixfields and 2-0 at Adams Park), in fact Wycombe have won the last six meetings between the clubs. We last tasted success in a 2016 League 2 encounter (1-0 with a Danny Rose goal) and that followed our last win at Adams Park back in 2015 as Marc Richards, Lawson D'Ath and the only goal in Cobblers colours for loanee Shaun Brisley (who?) gave us a 3-2 success.
David Rock will be in the middle for this game. He has reffed 18 games this season and dished out an impressive 82 yellow and 3 red cards. Its a quick return for him to Wycombe as he reffed their 1-1 draw at home to Reading at the beginning of December, booking 4 Wanderers players. His last Cobblers game was in September 2023 when he was the ref for our Trophy penalty shoot out defeat at home to Chelsea U21's, our last League encounter was at the back end of the season before when we won at Sutton in April.

Thanks for this - I'll not be travelling with much hope then...we were very lacking in goal threat last season, but the hospitality & friendliness of Wycombe made it a good day out.. After the draw between Wrexham and Brum last night, a win over us will put Wycombe top and 5 points clear of Wrexham in third.
They are going to be up for this!

I have a very bad feeling about this game.
No expectations, no pressure. Would like to see Nolan try a few bits, give the players freedom to express themselves etc.

I've never been more certain that we won't score a goal in 90 minutes. I'd be surprised if we even come close. Won't stop me from going though. Hope the beer tent is well stocked (and hasn't blown away)...

I also have a terrible feeling about tomorrows game, but it goes deeper than that for me. I have a horrible feeling we could well loose all the next five games if performances do not improve significantly. That with the Lincoln defeat would make six on the trot. To win games you must score and I simply cannot see us doing that in any of the next five games against opposition all of whom do not concede many. So on the other hand is our defence strong enough to keep them out? Well the new midfielders may assist in this quest but it will be a tough task to keep all five or our next oppositions from scoring against us. I sincerely hope my instincts are seriously misplaced but I feel we have reached the critical phase of our season and one which will determine our immediate status in this league.

I feel we have reached the critical phase and are still ill equipped for the rest of the season. We still need another centre back A decent striker (as I’ve said many times they cost money and we don’t pay the money required for a decent league one striker) so that’s one we can rule out A pacy winger to get us up the pitch and have a threat (an experienced one , not a clueless one) I personally doubt we will get one of the above, let alone the three needed to keep us in league one but Kev seems unconcerned and is probably planning for league two so let’s just go with the flow

Given the 2 clubs vast difference in current form it is probably irrelevant that we have a good record at Wycombe losing only 4 times in our 17 visits, Wycombe also have 4 wins and 9 games have finished all square. Losing their last season was the only loss in our last 12 visits.
Wycombe are the divisions top scorers averaging 2 goals a game with 52 goals from 26 games, 9 goals more than the next highest Birmingham. When mentioning goal scorers GPC omitted our former loan player Beryly Lubala who has 11 goals but only 4 of these have been in the league. They have scored in all but 2 of their games so keeping a clean sheet looks unlikely and they have scored 2 or more goals in all but 8 of their 26 games. However, 5 of those 8 games have been in their last 6 homes games when they have only scored 5 goals and conceded 4. They have conceded 2 or more goals 8 times but only once at home and have 8 clean sheets.
With KN saying he does not expect any more signings and none of the injured ready to return again he has little wiggle room with team selection and the bench will again not be very strong. Other than Taylor coming in for either Chouchane or Hondermarck the only other possible change I see is that he could bring back Burge in goal.
Having nil points from the Lincoln game we cannot afford to be losing both of these next 2 away games but the Bolton games currently looks to be our better prospect. Having only scored 6 goals in our last 12 games does not inspire confidence so we hope they are unsettled by losing their manager and the boys can pull off a backs to the wall performance to continue our good record at Adams Park.
