The second part of the Wanderers double header sees Teyn make the 300 mile round trip on a Tuesday night to the Toughsheet Stadium so face Bolton.
The Trotters picked up a good win at Huddersfield on Saturday ending Towns 16 match unbeaten league run which had stretched back to the first day of October. As a result Bolton moved back to within a point of the playoff positions among a group of three teams on 41 points.
Bolton were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League way back in 1888 and up to the mid 60's had spent most of their years in the top division. The 70's to the 90's were a real rollercoaster with thirs tier football in 1973, top tier again by 1978, falling all the way to the fourth division by 1987 and working their way back to the top division (Premier League) by 1995. After one season they were relegated but they went back up the following year, again only for one season though before three seasons in the Championship. Then came a decent run of 11 seasons in the Premier League again (2001-2012) before they found themselves back in Division 4 by 2020. Life never seems dull as a Bolton fan!!
This season they have been inconsistent. After making the playoffs for the last two seasons and also winning the EFL Trophy in 2023 they had high hopes for this season. Its been a bit of a struggle though and ultimately cost Ian Evatt his job last week. Six wins and five defeats at home tells the story. Wigan, Barnsley and Charlton have all gone home with the three points in the last month or so. Huddersfield and Exeter were early season winners at the Toughsheet. They are still in this seasons EFL Trophy but bowed out at the first hurdle in the FA Cup to League 2 leaders Walsall, and also fell to a 5-1 defeat at Arsenal in the 3rd round of the League Cup.
Top League scorer Dion Charles departed a couple of weeks ago, he joined Huddersfield. Aaron Collins scored his seventh League goal of the season at Huddersfield and he can add seven cup goals to his tally too. John McAtee will be another threat, he is on 7 goals in all competitions too. Bolton replaced Charles with Peterborough striker Joel Randall and they also brought in defender Alex Murphy on loan from Newcastle last week.
Ian Evatt won exactly half of his 262 games in charge of Bolton. He took the helm in July 2020 and was one of the longest serving EFL managers until his dismissal last week. Evatt made 13 appearances for the Cobblers on loan from Derby back in 2001. Our new manager Kevin Nolan started out life as a professional footballer at Bolton. He made 345 appearances for the Whites in 9+ years scoring 50 goals in all competitions before earning himself a £4m move to Newcastle. Julian Darby is currently in caretaker charge at Bolton.
Not much of a head to head between the two sides. Wanderers elevated position for many years means that we have only met on 16 previous occasions. We have not tasted victory in any of our last five encounters, they did the double over us in 2016/17 season winning 1-0 at Sixfields before a 2-1 win on their patch, Michael Smith with the Cobblers goal. That scoreline was repeated in 2023 as a crowd of over 19000 saw early goals from Charles and Williams put Bolton in the driving seat and despite a Sam Hoskins goal midway through the second half we couldn't fine the net again. The return game at Sixfields saw us head into a very early lead thanks to a second minute Kieron Bowie goal and despite Bolton going down to 10 men after just 27 minutes they still found an equaliser in the second half to take a share of the spoils. Earlier this season Bolton were 4-0 up before taking their foot off the gas and allowing us to score two in stoppage time (Eaves and Guthrie) to make the score look a bit more presentable.
Our only win at the new Bolton Ground was in a Carling Cup encounter in August 2008. Two Bayo Akinfenwa goals put us in charge before Gary Cahill was sent off for the Trotters. They did pull a goal back late on through who else but Kevin Nolan but we hung on for a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of 7,136. We earned ourselves a third round trip to Sunderland as a result, and despite leading 2-0 with four minutes to go we managed to find a way to lose on penalties!!
Sunny Singh Gill is the appointed ref for this game and lets hope history repeats itself as he was in charge of our fine win at Huddersfield earlier in the season. He did send off Odimayo though! 65 yellows and just that one red card from him so far this season, he refereed Boltons win at Shrewsbury back in August and he also reffed on this ground for Boltons 5-0 win over Oxford back in March 2024. He did of course make his EFL bow at Sixfields back in August 2022.

Well considering the fans played a significant part in the result at Wycombe, one can only assume that if we lose this one then our travelling support will have to take a fair share of the responsibility for the result. I take it it works both ways?
|
Managers like Bowen and Wilder* are rare to come by! Whether we like it or not Jon Brady is the only recent Manager who can possibly follow in their* footstops!
We should stick with him, as at the moment he is our only hope of survival as a EFL Club!

Our first league meetings with Bolton were in the very memorable 1964-65 season in division 2 (now Championship) when we won promotion to division 1 (now Premiership). We fought out a 0-0 draw at Burnden Park and beat them 4-0 at home with goals from Theo Foley, Dereck Leck and 2 from Don Martin. At this time I was in my final year at grammar school and our PE teacher originated from Bolton so I was pleased to be able to rib him about that result. Newcastle won the league with 57 points (only 2 for a win back then), we finished 2nd with 56 points and Bolton missed out on promotion finishing 3rd with 50 points. We secured [promotion with a 4-1 win at Bury with 3 more gains remaining. We done the double that season over Man City beating them 2-0 in both games and they finished mid table with 41 points, the crowd at Maine Road was 20,935 I believe they get a few more nowadays. We were unbeaten at home that season and only lost a total of 6 games, Newcastle lost 9 but had more wins and fewer draws.
On to tomorrow nights game, only 8 visits to Bolton and we won 3, drawn 1 and lost 4. Bolton have not been strong defensively and only teams to concede more goals are the bottom 4 and Peterborough whose team they have weakened further by recently signing their midfielder Joel Randall. They have actually only lost 2 fewer goals than we have. In their 27 games they have scored 2 goals or more 12 times and failed to score in 8, they have conceded 2 or more goals 14 times (8times in their 14 home games) and kept 6 clean sheets (3 at home). Their recent home form has not been good and they have won 1, drawn 1 and lost 3 of the last 5, conceding 2 goals in each 4 of them. Shrewsbury came away with a point earlier in the season as did Cambridge this month and they would have won but put through their own net in the 90th minute.
Once again I expect little change if any to the starting 11 and if we can repeat our current defensive strength (only 1 goal conceded this month in 4 games) we can get a positive result but it would be good to find the net at the other end of the pitch as we have failed to score in 8 of the last 13 games.

In that case, I not prepared to accept that responsibility, I am not going. I don't want to accept the responsibility of any relegation on my shoulders.

The lads need some ferocious support through the TV. It makes the biggest difference.
For those going to Bolton, just get in and straight out before you can say "Peter Kay".

Yet another "No tickets on the day" jokes. The stadium holds 28,000 but they average around 20,000, I doubt if they would turn away potential paying customers.

I wouldn’t take too much notice of our recent home results guys the atmosphere around the Reebok has been toxic to say the least and really got through to the players but now Evatts gone a huge cloud has been lifted so hopefully we can continue the positivity we started at Huddersfield on Saturday. There will be a big gate again and everybody’s right behind the team and caretaker manager Julian Darby a previous popular player and Bolton through and through. It will be brilliant to have Nobby back in the building though and he’ll get a big wanderers welcome, indeed many were calling for him to replace Evatt himself but you nipped in first. Hopefully our performances are on the up again now but you never know? Kev seems to be doing a good job with your boys so it certainly won’t be easy but if we play anything like I’m hoping we’ll probably be too good for you on the night. Safe trip to those travelling. 😀

Cheers Blobby. If you can score a goal you should be ok...we've failed to find the net in nine of our last 14 games, and in the other five we've scored six in total. Two wins in 16...but Nolan has managed to tighten us up at the back.
