What has happened to radio. Apart from one particular show on BBC RN it's abysmal, soulless and dull.

Put this out for discussion before I put my views down.

Apart from the footy and Rugby coverage it’s aimed at a certain demographic, 75+ living in a village.

A few good shows on 6 music; Iggy Confidential and Stuart Maconies Freakzone for example. Both play some "out there" stuff you probably wouldn't hear elsewhere on the wireless.

Well Radio 2 with it’s new line -up is so dull.
Has Scott Mills got a personality? Vernon Kay awful, pop master replacement format, just boring.
Trevor Nelson in the afternoon? Really?
Worst of all Sara Cox talking to everyone as if they are stupid.
Obviously I don’t touch Radio 1 at my age, and that is exactly right.
Tried a few Breakfast shows recently Chris Moyles – loves himself too much, Chris Evans – gone very weird!

As for BBC local radio…

Travelled with work from Hinckley to Chesterfield late last year mid morning. Scrolling through stations EVERY one was playing the same songs in the same order at roughly the same time. Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield all the same but with different presenters.

And 1pm-2pm they ALL do a mystery year (dullest competition on radio?). Every station has the same two years and the same set of songs from those years. Dull dull dull!

Since the days of Steve Wright, Danny Baker, Chris Evans (in the 90s), Wogan and even Ken Bruce – now sounding terrible on GHR! Radio is all over the place.

Thankfully we have Bernie Keith, funny, local and with great guests. Doesn’t adhere to the playlists, bit of a rebel never know what he will say next.
Ignores the mystery year between 1-2pm just plays oldies.

Music wise, just Absolute radio for me. Quality selection of music, with a no repeat guarantee. Pump it up, by Elvis Costello, as I type!
Sport wise, Talksport hits the spot, although some of the co-presenters can be very irritating. One of the lady footballers sounds like Vicky Pollard on steriods.
Theres only so many "yeah but, no buts" "is it tho" and "am I bovvered" that I can cope with, before before reaching for the volume control.
A while back, whilst driving down to London at 04.30 am, fivelive had a F1 round up of the weekends race. It was the usual procession in the same order, from start to finish. They managed to make an hours programme, about one of the drivers attempting an overtake maneuver. The most pointless hour of radio ever.
Surely its the "excellent" Bernie Keith? (copyright Toglet Tim)  Grin

We have it on at work all day and it's so fcuking annoying Agree about all those "DJ's" too. Seems anyone can be a DJ these days. Romesh Ranganathan, Emma Willis, Claudia Winkleman etc etc.

No repeat guarantee but is it really? I mean with the selection of songs available now from history, you shouldn't  even hear it again in the same month never mind each day.
Bush and richie aren't too bad, but then I found out they present every afternoon show (ABSOLUTE 80s,90s,00s etc etc.) So they can never interact with the music that's played. in fact they've probably pre-recorded all their links beforehand and they are slotted in by the producer. Not organic at all. To be honest if thats the way radio is going then may as well listen to Spotify all day.

I was once a Talksport listener....probably when Parry (Talksports equivalent to Evers  Grin) and Brazil were on there in the mornings.
I got fed up with the constant adverts and that blue nose, ginger tw*t Adrian Durham, who only had an opinion if it was controversial. I think I'd rather listen to Savage and Sutton, he is that bad!

On the hour long commute I either listen to Five Live, or if there is nothing of interest going on, a Podcast....recently enjoyed 'Kill List' and partial to 'Off Menu'.

One of the chippies on my old site, had local radio cockney wanker on, and they had a set list of about 30 tunes. You would hear the same thing over and over, and I knew what the time was when Britney chirped up on the hour, every hour, eight times a day. Now thats repetition.

every show on that station is the same isn't it?
one says black is white, the other says white is white, then you have a 4 hour radio show.

Same with 606 on R5, just a load of disgruntled fans ringing in having a moan about referees, VAR, their current manager etc Savage takes one side, Sutton the other.
Dull

God bless Tony Butler.
Mostly Six music and Spotify for the tunes, plus a bit of Bernie Keith every now and again.
