Agree, just have that nagging feeling as soon as Russell Martin get another job, he'll be off joining him again...

Fingers crossed he's here for the long term & doesn't get tempted by the riches of higher league football! Grin

Reading the stuff on the club website, he's come in as Technical Director and it sounds pretty long term.
Can someone explain what this is, as opposed to Director of Football?

Just asked my good pal, Chat GPT -

In British football, the **Director of Football** and **Technical Director** roles can overlap, but they have distinct focuses. Here’s how they differ:

### **Director of Football**
- **Strategic role**: Oversees the club’s **long-term footballing vision** and ensures continuity across managerial changes.
- **Transfers and recruitment**: Works with the manager and scouts to identify and sign players, often negotiating deals.
- **Club philosophy**: Ensures consistency in playing style and philosophy across all teams, from first team to youth academy.
- **Managerial input**: May be involved in hiring or advising on the managerial setup.
- **Liaison between board and football operations**: Acts as a bridge between owners, board members, and the football department.

### **Technical Director**
- **More hands-on with football operations**: Focuses on the **day-to-day** footballing structures and processes.
- **Coaching and development**: Works on coach education, player development, and ensuring modern training methods.
- **Youth and academy oversight**: Plays a key role in shaping the development pathways for young players.
- **Data and sports science**: May be involved in using performance data to improve player development and team performance.

### **Key Difference**
- The **Director of Football** is broader and more **strategic**, dealing with recruitment, club vision, and football operations at a high level.
- The **Technical Director** is more **specialised**, focusing on the **footballing infrastructure**, including coaching methods, player development, and performance analysis.

At some clubs, these roles overlap or are merged, but at larger clubs, both exist with clear distinctions.

I don't think he will. He tried that . He's happy here both personally and professionally.

Pleased to see him (officially) back.

He seems to work wonders with defenders, which in the short term is exactly what we need.

Anyone know anyone who knows anything about scoring goals at the other end?

I don't get the negativity about this appointment. He has contributed to success every time he has any involvement with the club. Our recruitment and defense seems to improve every time he is involved.

Don't think anyone is being negative, most/all are glad he's back...just hoping he stays & doesn't jump ship again!

The fact he & KN worked together before should hopefully banish those fears  Grin

I've have admittedly been a bit negative - whilst I would never begrudge someone moving on for a better opportunity I wasn't over impressed by the way it was done after his promotion season. The moving to Southampton was perfectly reasonable. As a defensive coach no doubt he has pedigree - never really know who is responsible for actual recruitment so I will pass on that one other than to say whilst he wasn't here we have made some terrible signings

For me very welcome back in the role he is taking but I really would not want to see him overall in charge of team affairs because his (albeit successful) defensive mindset made for some very dull football.

He rejected Russell Martin at Swansea and then accepted Russell Martin at Southampton. I guess if Martin was to bizarrely land a prem club next appointment Calderwood might fancy the move.

Should we appoint someone incompetent instead?

I'm glad he's back but obviously those rumours will inevitably start as soon as Russell Martin or Chris Hughton get back in work. Hopefully when this does happen he'll stay put this time with this more in-depth role he's been given. He's also a very nice guy. Welcome back Colin.

As long as there is not a release clause and we get compo each time he is probably our most profitable asset in recent years 😂😂
