Hondemarck is our worst midfielder by a long chalk. Fox was better and he’s in L2.

Agreed! Even the QE2 turns quicker than he does. We've had him for three years and he hasn't progressed one bit.

We haven’t included any of the youth / contracted first year players like Reuben Wyatt, Josh Tomlinson etc?

Personally I wish them well but at what point if they are not forcing their way into first team plans do we say it’s not happening here and let them move on and rebuild.

Although there’s been a few bench appearances this was in the context of ridiculous injury lists.

Hondemarck not for me!

KN was a midfielder, he identified this as our weak spot straight away, hense the signings of Shaw, Taylor & Perry...

All three of those are far better options than Hondemarck imo...

A priority would be to try to sign Taylor permanently, even if we drop into L2, as he's a superb player

Just checked in, oops i actually meant released, nowhere near good enough

None of them are anywhere near the level required.

My thoughts as well. The levels they get loaned out to doesn’t inspire confidence.

I think CC said that none of the current youth players were of a standard to step up to the first team. I would imagine there’ll be a clear out at the end of the season…

If that is true (I haven’t seen enough of them to comment, JB obviously thought so as he refused to play them), we need to take a serious look at our youth set up. It is essential to have youth players who can fill in the odd minutes here or there. They are a massively cheaper option than having an experienced pro to sit on the bench for most of the season and allow us to spend more on wages on the starting eleven. Not even to mention the lack of players we have bought through to be starters or have sold on for a profit.

A major issue with youth teams at our level is the premier league academies that scoop up anyone with a decent level of talent.
You hear it all the time about local kids being on Leicesters, Villas books etc.
Parents putting in the miles every week for training sessions at facilities much better than ours with the dream and association of a big club although 99% get dropped.

Add in to that the youth players Villa etc are releasing at 18/19 are better than the 18/19 year olds we're bringing through - and it's a tough ask!

And therein lies a solution. Perhaps we should be concentrating on picking up youth players released from premiership clubs, sorting the wheat from the chaff and maybe uncover some gems. Get ourselves a reputation as a second-chance saloon type of club and hope for more Perrys than Couchaines.
A one  year youth contract shouldn't cost much and may be a lot cheaper in the long run.

We’d probably unearth another Benny Ashley Seal or JJ Hooper.

Similarly, I suspect that Brighton didn't think that Leonard was the standard for their first team, likewise Bowie with Fulham. They have still done OK though.

The important aspect of this youth debate is to get them to cement their futures in a foundation built from the bottom up. I once saw a very young Jasper Slouch play in a friendly against the 'stools' and he egged them on. He rendered their defence prostrate, it was like watching St Trinians with the sound turned to nine. Years later he played in a testimonial for a hero round these parts and he couldn't offer solace, it was a sad morning. Now he serves old folk burgers in Wisconsin. What a world!

He's 30 so a decent 2 year contract would suffice and if he can do better elsewhere so be it. Very little resale value if he signs on again.

Personally I really hope he stays. He's always had the quality and nobody can accuse him of lack of effort anymore. He also has the ever-more-important asset of not being injury prone (fingers crossed). I think he's got 2 more good years in him.

Didn't we? I'd say that he's have been a nailed-on starter before Taylor and Shaw arrived this season, especially with Sowerby out. Anyway, even if Pinnock were to leave and regret it, that's no consolation for Cobblers fans like me, who want him to stay.
