There is an article on the BBC Sounds site about when George Best got lucky and scored 6 goals against us in the FA Cup.  Having listened to it I decided to find the game highlights on youtube and watch them.

Now I was only 5 at the time and wasn't at the game and although I have seen Georges Bets's goals numerous times, I don't think I had ever watched the full highlights, so I never knew that the Cobblers had had a penalty saved in the match.

All these years and I never knew that until now - amazing

I think we also hit the bar before United scored.

Managers like Bowen and Wilder* are rare to come by! Whether we like it or not Jon Brady is the only recent Manager who can possibly follow in their* footstops!

We should stick with him, as at the moment he is our only hope of survival as a EFL Club!

If everybody that claims to have been there that day, is telling the truth, then the ground held over 50k that day. (I wasnt there)

I was. Spion Kop. I was in the background of one of the still pictures as George Best scored one of his 6 goals. I think it was the one when he left the keeper on his arse but cant be sure.

Tabasco i think you are right, the same 50,000 attended the Chester game some 15 years later  Grin Grin Grin

I do sometimes wonder why Cobblers fans are so fixated by a game where one player managed to completely humiliate us.

Me too, right at the front.
The game was a nightmare for the players. The chairman at the time,  Eric Northover, burst in the dressing room after the game and gave them all a slating, saying they were the a total disgrace and the worst team to ever play for Northampton.

I wasn't, I was only 9 at the time, but I was at the Tranmere replay game in the previous round.

I remember you had to go to that game to get a token for a ticket to the Man U match. A mate tried to get out before the game started to go back in and get a second token. He was wasn't allowed out, so he tried to complain unlawful imprisonment.

There were vouchers in the C&E as well?

I think that I was at the Chester game. I never missed a home game at the time, so must have been. But I genuinely cannot remember for sure.

I didn't know that. It must have been risky assuming the Chron's distribution was way over the County Ground capacity. I guess there must have been no guarantee with the voucher

Funny you say that, I'm the same. I regularly attended games around then and hardly missed any. But there was no "you've got to the Chester game as it's going to be remembered as the lowest attendance ever" at the time.

The amount of time OUR supporters raise that game, I wonder if I am surrounded by masochists.

To be honest mate, I probably just shrugged it off as one of those nights, where you didnt have to queue for the "urinals", Tony Ansell looked bored, and got served quick in the Tavern (pint of Trad please mate).  Grin

We didn't have social media to highlight the particular 'landmark' so I'm surprised that people remember?
I could have been there, but couldn't be sure?

I think you'll find it was the league game against Bradford PA prior to the FA Cup game where you got a voucher entitling you to a Man Utd ticket. There was nearly 13,000 there, highest home league attendance (season average 5,594) although people were definalty climbing over the wall and then re-entering again on the crickerside entrance, witnessed it happening myself.

Too young for the United game but was definitely at Chester as didn’t miss a game from 1979-1990, not that I remember it. Must have been one of the few games you could watch sitting down at the back of the Hotel End and you’d laugh at how bad we were. We definitely deserved that Carr season in that era.

Of course, that makes sense. They would have to win the Tranmere game to play Man U.

Exactly, I think the claim that so many people watched the Chester - and Man Utd game is overblown. I dont see any reason you would lie about being at either game or any evidence that people have done so.
