I fully understand the reason for the play offs as without them several clubs seasons would be over long before the season ends but personally I always want the team that finished just below the automatic promotion line to win the play offs as over a 46 game season they have earned it. A team finishing 7th in the 2nd division have not earned the right to be promoted and when it happens they often come straight back down as Crawley have this season, Carlisle did last season and we did when we went up with KC.
So today I will be rooting for Sheffield Utd to beat Sunderland. Tomorrow as Stockport have already lost out it will have to be Charlton to beat Orient despite my dislike of Jones. Monday Walsall to beat AFC Wimbledon.
Next weekend a former EFL club will return to the 2nd division as the National League play off final is between Oldham (with Manny Monthe) and Southend but neither truly deserve to be promoted. 5th placed Oldham finished 23 points behind 2nd placed York and 7th placed Southend finished 28 points behind York who averaged 2 points a game finishing with 96 points. In my mind after 46 games York fully deserve to be promoted but because they didn't win their play off semi they won't be. If we were in York's position we would be fuming.

Whilst I agree with the principal of what you are saying, is just doesnt work that way any more. I also dont agree with Spurs and the Mancs (given their respective league places) scrapping for a place in next seasons Champions League. Although I do allow myself a big cheesy grin, when walking past the Trumpet, and all of the Npton Reds are waiting for the coach. Hello lads, who are you losing to today? Nah, its all about cash these days.

I’m much more of a fan of national league play off than the football league ones. The higher you finish in the table the bigger the advantage you get. You play one legged home games and need to win less games to make the final.

West Stand OAP, the play offs are a perfect way to keep the season interesting for longer. You are going back to days that are long gone, supporters under the age of 40 dont even know what it was like without the play offs, you are just showing your age now.

Sunderland getting promoted also stops the slugs getting another 1 million quid as a sell on for Harrison Burrows

As I said in my original post I fully understand why the play offs were introduced but I prefer to see the team that just missed out on an automatic place win through. Unfortunately that didn't happen yesterday but on that performance 1 of next seasons relegation places from the Premiership looks assured, Sunderland will need major investment in new players to have any chance of staying up.

I was surprised that after playing 48 games to reach the play off final without the use of var it is then used in the final, although it was available I would have thought they would have stuck with what had been considered good enough before ie the referee in charge making the decisions. As we have seen many times this season var has often resulted in the wrong decision being made. Whether the var decision was correct or incorrect yesterday if it was not in use Sheffield Utd would have been promoted. Many other results during the season may have been different if var had been available. I think it was wrong to change the system for a single game.

You think that it is wrong, for the richest game in football to not have the use of all available technology? If it was not in use, and the ref missed a blatant offside or handball, then the law suits would be flying. And Sheff have a bit of previous in this dept, after claiming compo from West Ham in 2008, following their relegation from the Prem.

No different to the officials making mistakes in the previous 48 games without var.

Except that it all comes down to this one game. The richest game in club football with 150 million quid riding on it. I would say that there is a massive difference.

Massive difference. It's actually available for this game and choosing not to use it would make zero sense.

What, like in the FA Cup pre 5th round and Carabao Cup?
