Steve - nothing to do with Alistair Slowe - did you used to live on the Welford Road near the top of North Western Avenue?
Yes, 174 Welford Road. Why - did you see me flashing on Kingsthorpe rec?

Not that I am aware of! I think I went to school with your daughter in the mid/late 80s - Kingsthorpe Middle School. I grew up on North Western Avenue. I'd say small world but I suppose its not unusual to meet other people from Northampton on a Northampton Town message board!  Smiley

From a post by 'Power Football' reporting what was said at the last Trust Forum:

Thornton/Jacobs - Sammo recognises that although they are talented footballers they aren't the battlers he feels he requires at the moment, he said he didn't think Thornton was reliable enough to play in a midfield 4.

That's the first time I read that, and it's far more worrying than the Slowe comment.  If he doesn't think that Thornton can play in a midfield 4, where does he think he can play? He didn't get a run out yesterday and I am beginning to doubt that Sammo sees a future for him here.  Perhaps he'll only play him at home?

He was struck down with flu, think he was just on the bench to make up the numbers

In preference to our Alistair?  Or did Ali have a bit of man flu as well?

I don't know why I didn't notice this before, but the whole idea of Slowe being found by coincidence, by a scout from Newcastle, has been copied from a film!

The film in question, Goal!, is the story of Santiago, who is an amateur footballer who illegally crossed the Mexican border 10 years previously, plays for a local amateur side which comprises solely of local hispanics. He dreams of being a professional, but considers it unlikely due to his circumstances. Then one day he gets noticed by a scout, from Newcastle no less, who just happened to be in the area. He is then given a trial at Newcastle, and after being knocked back at first, he eventually wins a contract and gets into the first team.

Well, I doubt Slowe is an immigrant, and he certainly wasn't given a contract at Newcastle, but the general premise is the same. Also, in a similar manner to the way they didn't bother checking that the picture of Lionel Garry wasn't actually Steve Martin, they haven't bothered changing the club that he had a trial at.

Infact, can we even be certain that Slowe ever had a trial at Newcastle, or is this just another thing that has been made up?

Amazingly he is still available to sponsor, player, home kit AND away kit. Unbelievable marketing opportunity for geeky kids with rich parents ...

Oh, and also found this:
"Like the film Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Dr. Slowe now has his son Alistair caught up in the adventure, teaching kids football in Ghana, helping change their lives ..."

Well, I doubt Slowe is an immigrant,

Well, he was when he lived in Ghana.  And Cyprus.  I don't know, going there and taking opportunities away from good, honest, hard working local lads.  It shouldn't be allowed.  Send him back to where he came from. Tongue

He trotted past me at about 12.20 yesterday into the ground on his own. Most players arrive in pairs or groups. As was holding a phone to left ear which he indicated so avoided buying a 50/50 ticket and having a chat!! He then walked out about 20 minutes later! Not sure if he went home?.

Why don't the Club just release him now? He obviously won't be making an appearance this season.....

Complete waste of a squad number and an embarrassment to the Club.

Even if we do, is it worth the embarrassment?

I'm not embarrased to take money which may pay some bills. I just think we're giving it too much air time, on those slow news days.

I sponsor a youth team player and a 1st team players kit. One I declare (via the Match Day Prrogramme) and one I don't.

If A. Slowe has a sponsor then legally there is little difference between the two scenarios.

Illegal payments in football involve an agent taking money out of the game or undisclosed payments between clubs. Neither of these apply so there is a lot of excitement over something that does not deserve it.

We're now on page 22 of this thread - 434 posts - and we still all think there's a problem here, but we're not quite sure exactly what it is! Perhaps time for a club statement to clarify things?!
