Hi there, Luke Guttridge was recently released by you guys. He has apparently been linked to my club (Barnet) and want your honest opinion on what you think of him.
My understanding is that he is a defensive midfielder?

Out of interest, why isn't he still part of your squad for next season?

Thanks in advance.

He's a really good, creative midfield player who was often played wide right by us when he looks as though he prefers to play in the centre. We let him go because he was one of our higher earners and, most importantly, very injury prone: there was always the feeling that he was just about hanging on to being a pro footballer. He would be a really good signing for you: on the right deal and as long as you don't expect more than half a season from him.

If he signed for you he'd be the most talented player in your squad. He'd also play the least games of anyone in your squad. He's had a string of serious injuries that he's never recovered properly from. Good player, but we couldn't afford to pay the kind of wages he was on to someone who's only play 10-15 games a season. Basically he's the embodiment of the term "luxury player".

Good player, but crocked. Best at pulling strings in the middle. If you took away his injury problems and his hotheadedness, he'd be excellent.

Thanks for that. Bit of a hot-head eh? Must be something to do with his height?!
Does he pick up many yellow/red cards over a season then?

Also what are his strengths? Tackling, through balls, set pieces?

Thanks in advance

As others have said, he is extremely injury prone.

His biggest strength is his distribution. He is very creative and scores a fair few as well. In all honesty, if he wasn't made out of glass he would be playing for at least a top half league1 team. He does pick up a fair few yellow cards but I wouldn't say he has a disciplinary issue...more so that he is quite an aggressive player and does wear his heart on his sleeve. I liked him as a player, and on a sensible salary would have liked him to have been retained. But for us something had to give.

Really rated Luke in his time with us.

Good on the ball, good vision and certainly too good for League 2 on his day. As others have said, injuries have hampered him and for what he gave us he was a bit too expensive.

Set pieces are an excellent part of his game and some of his free kicks (pre injury) were a joy to behold. If we hadn't had Danny Jackman banging them in 2 years ago, Luke would have taken every free kick and I guarentee would have scored a few.

His tackling isnt the best which is why he can pick up a yellow card or 2. Hardly ever seen him get sent off though

will be a good signing for you if he does

Guttridge rarely gives the ball away cheaply, has an excellent first touch, and can make space for himself even when tightly marked. He's better in the middle than at the edges because his 360-degree vision gives him more passing options rather than being fenced-in on one touchline or the other. Great left foot shot, and strikes a dead-ball well.
His injury status would be a worry, as would his temperament. He was one of the reasons we didn't make the playoffs, he cynically stamped on an opponent at Rotherham right under the nose of 2 officials, and got a red, a 3-game ban for violent conduct.

He'll be a match-winner for you as long as he controls his temper and doesn't get crocked.

Not much to add that hasn't already been said.  Very good player on the ball.

I would seriously question his fitness though.  He's had injuries here that looked like it might well be the end of his career which I can't imagine have simply vanished.

To be honest, if you were thinking of picking up one of our midfield players, you might do better to look at Alex Dyer. Young player who has looked class on occasions, disappeared on others, but probably has really good potential and was unlucky to be released. Don't think he's been picked up elsewhere yet.

I highly doubt he's the actual manager of Barnet!!!!!

Good Player but always injured and personnally think he was a moaner with a bad attitude - probably due to the level he plays at.  Feels he should be higher.

May be worth a gamble assuming not on high wages as when he is fit is a very good footballer at this level but seems to play less games every season. Glad we moved him on though.

Luke Guttridge also get's my seal of approval, very much a flair player, but at this level and with respect to Barnet, they're probably best suited in turning their attentions elsewhere given his above mentioned injury problems together with the command of a decent wage.

You must have been watching a different player to me.

If he wasn't so injury prone Sammo would probably have wanted to keep him and he could arguably by plying his trade at a higher level
