That is a constructive debate, I wouldn't be adverse to shipping one centre back out and replacing him with another.

However, there is no point in just signing centre back after centre back, at some point we need to settle on the centre back pairing and stick with them.

I don't like 5-4-1 but i think we should be playing it considering we are so bottom heavy with defenders

Westwood is clearly not a long-term answer, and Langmead simply doesn't look like a very good footballer (sorry, but..). Personally, I think Johnson is a RB and Tozer a CB, although I appreciate others will disagree. Webster is fallible, although possibly has potential - but if GJ is detemined not to play Tozer at CB, it looks as though Johnson and Webster is the preferred long-term pairing, with a bunch of short-term journeymen and others playing out of position to paper over the cracks. Given the doubts over Corker at LB and Nana at RB, the defence is all looking a bit of a mess of signings a la Barry Fry.

The back line is a mess at the moment.  Corker has been found wanting at left back so, hard though it may be on the guy, a seasoned LB is needed urgently.  Johnson was groomed in the pre-seasons for the right CB position but now finds himself in his preferrred position of RB.  Nana has been injured so it has not really been an issue but will be by this Saturday.  A combination of Langmead & Webster looks slow as may have been shown at Southend.  I wasn't there but the 8 mins I have seen on Cobblers Player shows on more than one occasion free headers from Southend forwards from free kicks in an area of the pitch that is clearly the responsibility of the centre backs.  If JJ stays at right back I would say a fit Westwood is a must since for all his injury woes at the Cobblers he is still a good footballer and well ahead of the other options on ability.  I would go for Langmead ahead of Webster but it is a close call and if Nana is fit maybe JJ and Westwood is worthy of a chance in the slow soft centre of our defence.

I had the impression on Saturday that Webster was working really hard to cover for Langmead and that Langmead's the slow and immobile one. I think this sometimes means it looks as though Webster's out of position and Langmead isn't obviously to blame, but I don't see Langmead showing any leadership qualities in defence or even much initiative. There may be doubts about Webster's ability, but not about his effort and commitment.

With what we've got at the moment, I'd go for:

JJ --- Webster --- Westwood --- Tozer

but I'd be looking for new signings at LB and CB.

Personally, I'd go for Tozer and Webster at CB, but it looks as though GJ is dead set against that.

I agree with this. It struck me several times during the home games against Wolves and Huddersfield how the two of them reminded me of the Steve Terry / Terry Angus pairing we had many moons ago where Angus appeared to be doing all the covering as well as his own job.

Tozer was dreadful at CB last season, and he hasnt made the CM position his own yet. His best position at the moment seems to be LB, and looks a better option than Corker.

Langmead flatters to decieve and as Ive said on other threads, Webster is frustrating as he can be excellent all game but then makes a school boy error. Perhaps he needs to work on his concentration levels.

I think Nana is better than people are giving him credit for. I wasnt sure about him at first but he's quick, strong and a decent footballer. I dont recall him being caught out too often, and is a marked improvement on Paul Rodgers thats for sure.

I'd like to see Nana, JJ, Webster, Tozer from our current squad, but theres certainly room for improvement...

I think I just don't know about Nana. He had some truly dreadful games when he first arrived, but has looked much better on occasion this season - let's hope that's the real Nana coming through.

I'd prefer playing Nana at RB tbh - this then allows JJ to play at CB, where I think he has some potential and is definitely better than the distinctly average Langmead.

There's a rumour it's pretty well Autumn now. Do we need a new thread?

Whilst the short term weather might appear autumninal after those long, balmy days of summer, I realy do think we should wait until the leaves change colour and start to fall gently to the ground, giving a deep, rustling carpet for hedgehogs to hibernate in.

Hold your horses Cricketside, the loan window hasn't even opened yet.

...those long, balmy days of summer...

Do you mean those long, barmy days of summer, when we thought we'd be world beaters?

P.S. Check autumninal  Grin

I'd settle for it being autumn all the time if we could call the weather autumninal - great word!  Smiley
