Hello, I'm doing the Great Birmingham Run in October and also the London Marathon next year, i'm rasing money for a chairty called Bliss. Northampton Football Club have kindly given me 2 tickets for next season to try and help raise money for this good cause. I have been thinking of many ways how I could get rid of these tickets while making money for Bliss. What i'm asking if people could donate on my justgiving page, http://www.justgiving.com/wallymanisback and add "ntfc tickets" on the end of there message and the person who has donated the most wins the 2 tickets. I understand most of you maybe have season tickets already but you can always use the 2 tickets for friends or family plus and you are helping a great charity which is close to my heart. I will look on my justgiving on the 1st july 2011 at 8pm and see who has donated the most and will contact them to send the ticket vouchers. Many Thanks Wallyman

Methinks that you went about this in slightly the wrong way.

Methinks that you went about this in slightly the wrong way. I have to agree - I auctioned mine off on eBay. At least that way people can make a judgement on whether they are willing to bid for it based on the price that's on there. At the end of the day, people might not know the seller so they're not going to donate unless they have an affinity with the charity, unless they think that the price on offer + the amount they want to donate to charity is fair. I did something similar last year and used eBay. Had a few bids on there. The person who won made quite a generous bid, so I threw in my players bar pass that I got for being one of the 52 at Hartlepool last season. I also ran prediction competitions etc which were quite fruitful. Don't know if you have access to any race night equipment? I held one a few years back and made a fortune! Because you're running a Tote style event, you end up keeping a Percentage of the takings, plus we held an Auction Race at the end (where people group together to "buy" a horse. If their horse wins they win a certain amount (£250 in my case)) and made just over £1,000 in that one night alone. Anyway, I wish you all the best. I'll be logging on at some point (work's servers for some reason block the Just Giving page!) to make a donation, although it will be too late to win the tickets I think. Very worthwhile charity.

What you are doing is excellent, but don't take a seeming lack of response as a lack of interest. My wife did a number of charity runs and it has become deeply embarrassing trying to extract "sponsor" money from the same group of friends and family each time. To make it worse, the recession is having a deadly effect on people's disposable income - we are dropping each month further into the mire despite constant efforts to downsize the budget, never drink out, do liftshares, cancel the health club, etc. etc. I find it really hard to explain to people trying to raise money for children desperate to raise £3,000 to go to a South American country with their school for a month-long social work visit that actually they will have their work cut out. I have an aunt dying of cancer and we are struggling to get even the statutory resources for her, but even in that circumstance I have had to say "No" to people wanting to raise money for cancer charities.
If we stopped spending billions of pounds fighting pointless and ultimately fruitless war in places like Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq we could better look after the vulnerable and needy members of our society. I do believe in fighting to defend our society where necessary, but at the moment we are pouring our taxes down the drain.
For money raising it can often be better (as some suggestions say elsewhere) to add value to your fundraising for donors by offering some sort of experience for their money (or, as you have, dangling a couple of Cobblers' tickets as a bit of an incentive) - I always try to do 3 or 4 charity quiz events free for people each year, or use my public address gear at charity events to help fundraising, and that can be an alternative to continually depleting the family budget to a dangerous point. I find that people are more willing to pay money if they get a night out at some sort of event like a quiz with decently-priced food and drink available, it means they get a bit of value for their donation. But, in the end, for even the most deserving of causes the raising of money is a cut-throat business that creates a great deal of heartache.
