Cracking game.....

1st half we were superb with the boy Jacobs really showing he is something special. Wedderburn really impressed me with his vision and passing range (he takes some knocking off the ball!). Purcell battled away and deserved his goal. Harris won alot in the air but his positioning needs tweeking for a centre back. Thornton always wants the ball and is a joy to watch due to his creativity and looks in great shape. 2nd half we tired and Watford upped their game but we could have still snatched it with that Thornton free kick. On a negative, I really hope Guinan gets another club before the season starts. All he did was moan when he came on and gives us nothing. Apart from that, many positives this afternoon.

So many positives we can take from that game. If we play as we did in the first half today against League Two sides we'll rip them apart. Watford, for a Championship side, were poor, but they still showed occasional flashes of Championship skill (the move that led to their first goal for example), but all in all we outplayed them for 75 minutes, not one of the players who started (ie the first-choice players) had a bad game; Purcell finally showed us what he can do when given a little time and space, likewise Thornton, Wedderburn looked a class above in that holding midfield role, Gilly got stuck in and Harris, Walker and Jacobs all look like very exciting prospects that can only get better with experience and a bit of good coaching. If both Watford and the Cobblers continue down the paths they're on, that will be a league fixture in 12 months' time.

In the case of Michael Jacobs, this more than ever justifies Sammo's reasons for moving on Alex Dyer, more game time for Jacobs now and he already appears to be showing far more potential.

First and only pre-season game I've been to and I can see why Jacobs is the one everyone is talking about, simply outstanding.

My opinion on the new players....

I thought Marcus Hall was steady, so the sooner we get him signed the better.

Good to see Purcell get his first goal, although it was only a friendly, a goal always helps with confidence and I think he should be aiming for the 15-20 goal mark, hopefully more!

I'd like to see Wedderburn play again, hard to judge in this sort of game, he showed glimpes of what he can do and I'm sure once the season starts he'll prove to be a good signing.

Slowe was on the bench, but didn't come on, so I presume he is eligible to play now?

Good to see Johnson back, a great signing.

Anyway, due to work commitments I won't see the cobblers play again until the Brighton league cup match, hopefully we'll be brimming with confidence after destroying Torquay, thats if todays showing was anything to go by.

The thing I like the most really is the local element (McKay, Herbert, Jacobs and Harris' Family), and our average age showing that there is great potential for growth. Don't know if my sums are off, but I had our first 11's average age as 22.7. That is younger that 'We have an Academy, but no money' Watford, who were at 23.5.

I'd say there is quite a lot to look forward to at the moment....The emergence of Jacobs as being one of the main reasons....

Think back to this time last year when we were signing the likes of Gary Mulligan!!

Purcell finally showed us what he can do when given a little time and space

Question is in our league will we get that Huh?

Well he'll certainly get more than he did against the likes of Buckby and Corby, who he didn't have the best of games against, because unless we're soaring high at the top of the table, other League Two sides won't be scared of us and won't need to put 10 men behind the ball to avoid a thumping.

Can anyone explain Holt and Davis' disappearance from the squad?

I imagine they've picked up knocks but I haven't read anything about it.

Both slight knocks but nothing serious  Smiley

If only we could shift the 3 players Gray signed on 2 year deals (Guinan, McCready and Hinton) we could perhaps get one more quality player (target man?) in before the season starts. Just shows how far we have come since this time last year when there was no optimism about the new season whatsoever.

Well-researched article that.

Quote
"It was the Saints who struck first in the 12th minute thanks in no small part to several defensive errors from their opponents."

 Shocked

Reading the local BBC Website seems the Watford players were told in no uncertain terms they were a disgrace Huh?
