It's a simple equation. If Gilligan is good enough for our starting line-up then the team wont be good enough to get out of this division, the chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
As for Jacobs, you can go as far back as Ian Atkins and see that we are not noted for giving our own youngsters a chance, by the time they break through they've already become a target for other clubs so we never get to see the benefit of them. We've even lost youngsters to bigger clubs before they ever got close to a first team appearance. It's sad but there you go.

I would hope Jacobs comes off the bench against weakening legs of the opposition & gives us supporters something to look forward to like when Asamoah did.

Do you know what "Nemesis" means?
A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent personified in this case by a sex starved voyeur that is Tyro.

I tend to agree with Marvo, but wonder whether the strarting line-up choice is between Gilligan and Osman. I make no secret of my utter disdain for the latter, and am of the view that with Davis at left back, Thornton and Gilligan in the middle) or Wedderburn, with Gilli out right) we have the makings of a cracking line up. I see no reason for "investing" in a week-to-week contract player that is Osman. With Johnson at right back, central defence worries me because I don't think he's the best defensive full back and needs pace in the middle two to cover. McKay up front with Purcell. We shoudl be building a team around someone like Jacobs because he's only going to get better, and most of all he's exciting and will put bums on seats. I wouldn't step outside my back door to watch Abdul Osman.

Just to bump this again, but we surely need something to talk about positively after that game.
He looked pure quality pre-season, and was the stand out-player in a really good preason. Sounded dangerous yesterday, and was the stand-out player in a s*** game.
Is he going to this seasons best player, even at 18? Obviously Thornton being out meant we can't really compare him to his most obvious rival for that claim, but to be that exciting on your debut even when the team is 3-0 down and playing like chicken-s***s, surely means he can become a force in this league even as early as this year?

the lad has a bit of class about him and his little cameo performance on the left wing showed he is not fazed about league 2 but to lump our seasons aspirations on his shoulders is too much. osman and gilligan in CM , woeful. defence slow and no threat up front .

I'm afraid Wedderburn has to start alongside one of Gilligan and Osman, the two of them in one midfield has "powder puff" written all over it. The sooner we get Thornton back to full health the better too.

And he was so unlucky with his free kicks - they had goals written on them, damn that crossbar

I like how the BBC report says Torquay hit the bar twice through Michael Jacobs.

Perhaps we need to start thinking about giving the lad a longer term contract

The radio already talking about hime being transferred, we need to keep him for as long as possible, I assume his current contract is just this season.

Not sure how long his current contract is? The Radio guys are idiots, if he keeps the level and performance he's at and improves he won't be here that long to be fair. Ideally we could do with him agreeing a 2 year contract or something...guess the problem is the budget, he is probably on very little money at the moment and if we offer him a new contract its going to mean more money..still speculate to accumulate this time surely!!

Just get him on a 2 year deal worth the same as he is being paid now with the option for renegotiation at the end of this season. Simple really.

Why would he sign for two years on the same money? The lad sounds very confident of his ability, he knows full well what an asset he is at the moment so I imagine will demand a sizable pay rise to extend his contract.

You don't know till you try.
He has seemed very down to earth in his interviews and from what I have heard of him. Why wouldn't he want a secure future? For a young lad I'm sure he is on decent money still. Certainly more than I earned at his age at any rate

If he continues to be the asset he is showing to be then tieing him to a longer more luxurious contract can only put a greater value on his head, meaning someones got to come in and break that contract with a much more sizeable offer to prise him away........all in theory of course.

There can't be many who can claim to have sold such an outrageous dummy to a player he had to be stretchered off the pitch.

A true case of twisted blood. Their right back took the hump when Jacobs tried to nutmeg him.
