After the majority of you decided that Bruges was a better place to go on my summer holidays than Brussels (a wise choice, we had a fantastic time!), I'm once again in need of advice as to which city to go to for a short break in October.
My preffered choices are Prague or Vienna, but if anybody has any other suggestions for a winterish short city break then please say.
So which would be better?
Thanks.

Have threatened to go to both but never made it as it is cheaper to go from the UK. One I have been to which is apparently similar to Prague is Budapest, which is excellent if you like that sort of Eastern Block historical thing. Very cheap as well for the 'sustainence'.

I have been to both, and as I advised Bruges, you should definetley listen to me.
Prague has gone downhill in recent years, but it is still a beautiful place. If you havent been before then def consider it but do your research on where to stay as there are now a few seedy areas. Loved it back in 2001, still liked it (but less so) in 2005 but dont plan on going back and ruining my memories.
Vienna is more expensive but beautiful and romantic. Over xmas is a great time to go because of the winter market. Plenty going on, and plenty of gluwien. It is also a very short distance away from Bratislava (the 2 nearest capital cities in the world), so if you wanted a more eastern european experience, as well as Vienna, it is very easy and cheap to do both. We went via train for about £15 each I think and spent 3 days in each city.
Alternatives are def Budapest for a great nightlife. Krakow for some culture or Tallinn for a nice small quaint city where everywhere is walkable (smaller than Northampton). Lljublana is also worth looking at. Not very lively but a lovely place with some beautiful surrounding areas too (inc Lake Bled).

Prague everytime. A very compact, gothic, feel to the city centre with some quite stunning architecture. The outlying areas have a definite Soviet feel to them as Deepcut observed about Budapest. The only downside is the menu consists mostly of pork, pig,or Pinky and Perky.

To baldly go where no Betamax has gone before...

Went to Cologne recently, worth a visit. Just think Nottingham with a bigger cathedral and less guns.

Prague is beautiful. Amazing architecture, a great transport system and a lot less scummy (i.e. Full of British p1ssheads) than I expected too. I can also recommend Tallinn. Another lovely city that is great to just mill around. Lots of good bars too and a great (if s****** inducing) beer in A Le Coq.

Not been to Vienna but have been to Prague twice in the last 18 months and love it. Once to see extended family - the other with the boys to the Prague Beer Festival. Would highly recommend it!!! If you stay out of the Old Town then the prices are still exceptionally good. As other have said, it has amazing architecture, the natives are friendly and most speak English. Just a great place for a short break.
If you do go there, I'd recommend the Jurys Inn Hotel. Directly opposite a main underground station and tram stop. Superb access to most places of interest. Brilliant value for money!!!

I've been to Prague a couple of times. Went on a stag do in 07 and it was a really good p1ss up. Then went in 09 for a mate's 21st birthday and thought the place had gone massively down hill. You couldn't move for Adebayor look-a-likes trying to get you to go in various gentleman's establishments.
I'm sure most that have been on stag do's to Prague have seen this bloke though.
.
Not been to Vienna.
My next trip is going to Cologne in October to watch a couple of Bundesliga games

Thanks everybody for their input. Prague seems the obvious choice, but having done a bit of research into Cologne, the winter markets look amazing and I know it's something my girlfriends will love. Hope to book some flights soon for mid-December. Thanks again for the help

Thanks again for the help Colognes winter markets are good, and there are lots of them around the city... the problem is they are all essentially the same. The main winter market in Vienna has everything in one place and in a beautiful setting too in front of the Rathaus. I met a guy in Prague called Mr F*ckmeister who invited us in to his resteraunt. "first we eat, then we drink, then we f*ck" We went mcdonalds.

If it's Christmas markets you are after I agree that Cologne is one of the best in Germany, the only one to compare would be Berlin (minus double figures in temperature), both have markets spread across both both cities whereas other towns/cities normally have just the one. One for character which has everything and not too far from Calais (3 hours) would be Aachen if anyone wants to drive to one.

We look pretty set on Cologne in mid-December for 3 nights, should be a good break away. Thanks for all the help people, will report back after the trip to (most likely) congratulate you on another fine choice of destination

Spent a year working in Cologne in the early 90's and loved the place, try and time your visit with the festival in february I think, over a million people take to the streets for a week long pess up. They also have a Music festival in May with top artists and bands playing for free in random squares around the centre. visit the local breweries all have there own dedicated on site bars and sample the Kolsh.
