I have some money burning a hole in my pocket and am considering one or the other so views sought please as I'm not a technical whizz kid. Contemplating buying an ipad/2 or maybe I should buy an iphone4 or a Blackberry. What I need is something to keep me in touch with the outside world via Twitter/Facebook etc as next month I face a week alone in Wales and being plugged in for long is going to be very hit and miss so need your advice guys and the best place to buy them

My advice... dont buy any iThings
equivilent devices are much more user friendly, compatiable and value for money. I donts ee the point in ipads when you could get a more useful and powerful netbook for less money.
If you want a new mobile, I like my Samsung Galaxy S II but they are all much of a much nowadays and they all give good access to social networking. My facebook and linked in feeds (and twitter too if i had one) can be centralised so it all goes to one point, and the same with emails if you have more than one account. There are plenty of phones that do just as much, or more than the latest iPhone, without having any of the well documented downsides.
I'm sure the iThing fun boys will shoot me down, but I just dont get why anybody would possibly want one with so many better alternatives on the market.

My advice would be to just not go for a Blackberry. Too complicated for technophobe and are really only meant for business people. For pleasure i would go for an iPad or equivalent. I'm an Apple boy though so the above post has shot me down somewhat

The Sony Xperia Arc would be awesome for watching your dodgy movies on Tyro.

And poor impoverished people who organise looting in major cities.

I'd go with the Samsung Galaxy S phones as well. The Galaxy Tabs are nice little devices too if you want something a bit bigger. Generally speaking I prefer the open standards of Android kit to the closed off Apple approach that forces you to use their software to do anything, but that said if you aren't of a technical bent then Apple stuff is pretty easy to use. Personally, I prefer to get my hands a bit dirty and play around with the techie bits and pieces that you can with Android kit, but a lot of people don't want that. Having said all that, I do also have an iPad! It's a good device for web browsing that you can just leave on the coffee table for when you want to look at things quickly. It has a nice big screen that offers more real estate than most other tablets and for me, the fact that it's instantly on and connected to the Internet the second you switch it on sets it above netbooks. I only got the wifi version since I only use it around the house so I don't know how good the 3G versions are, but I do know that people tend to look a bit of a tool when you see them using one out in the street!

Blackberry is the least gimicky out of the 3! That said i won't be continuing with my Blackberry when this contract runs out.

Not sure how Android isn't gimicky. Android will become a major player within the next 2 years. Apple rule the market due to their advertising and marketing campaigns which are excellent.

I dunno about Android 'becoming' a major player, Wazza - they already are! Apparently more than twice as many Android devices as iphones were sold worldwide in the the last quarter of 2010. They are just spread over many different manufacturers and handsets rather than just focused into one model like Apple phones are, which is what gives iphones the ubiquity they appear to have.

Sorry, that's what I meant really. Android has the capacity to have about 4 times the amount of apps as Apple have but they aren't there yet. As the Android Market grows and overtakes Apple, the bigger the operating system will become.
One major player in the mobile phone market that are yet to release an Android handset are Nokia. Until they do (won't be too long) Android won't overtake iOS.

I don't personally own a smart phone but the people I know who have them have all got a HTC and from what I understand of technology they wipe the floor with iphones etc. Not sure about their tablets though, I hear HP are releasing a very powerful one in the near future.

I have just got a HTC Wildfire with Android and 3G. I have been told that they were being used by business and only now have been exposed to the public market in any great quantity and are rated by thaose in the know as the ones to have.

I have a HTC desire hd and apart from the battery life (which is poor on all smart phones) I can't knock it.

To save battery life for smart phones, turn data connection off when you're not using it. With me Samsung Galaxy I left it off on holiday and didn't need to charge it for 4 days.
