Papers this morning full of Newcastle fans in shirts saying "St James Park Forever" and "No to Ashleys Dot Com Army" etc etc.

What a load of crap. We will all know it as St James Park no matter what it is officially called. Why are they so bothered? The sponsorship deal could allegedly be worth up to £10mill a year! Its madness NOT to rename it.

I would happily go to Sixfields even if it were renamed the Toss Off My Dead Horse.com Arena

I thought it was absolutely ridiculous too. Don't see Arsenal or Man city complaining!

I find it quite odd from another angle. When I was at Newcastle University 30 years ago the locals and the local media all called it Gallowgate.

These days it's a very impressive venue though large tracts of the area round the stadium are derelict.

Both had new stadiums. Every other club in the Premiership might complain. I don't think there is one Premiership club that has had their existing stadium name changed.

Was it not the City of Manchester Stadium before The Etihad Stadium?

You got me on a technicality but you've got to admit The City of Manchester Stadium aka Eastlands is hardly steeped in tradition - nor is the JJB stadium at Wigan.

As one Geordie summed up nicely on TalkSport, who cares? They have frozen season ticket prices for the next ten years and currently selling them at half price for the rest of this season. Less than £15 a game. There isn't many top flight clubs doing stuff like that to fill their remaining few thousand seats. They are already averaging something like 46,000. If the main thing to worry about is a name, then they haven't got much to worry about.

To be fair to the Geordies, he also took them to the Championship.
