We've signed the former Leeds United and Cheltenham goalkeeper Shane Higgs on an 18 month contract.

I'm guessing first choice due to the 18 month contract, not just till the end of the season.

First choice and straight into the team for Boxing day.

Great signing IMO.

That's what I thought, but Sam Walker hasn't been too bad and then i'm guessing Freddy Hall may be released at the end of the season anyway due to how well Paul Walker has been doing at Brackley

The first of many quality signings has arrived.
With DC sure to back AB there is no doubt that other quality signings are just around the corner.
It's just a shame that it has taken a situation where the club has nosedived for the last five years and currently face a struggle to retain there league status before DC has started to sort the mess out.
Fair play to the chairman, never has the phrase better late than never been more apt.

I don't think Walker has done too much wrong in terms of being directly at fault for goals. He's a good shot stopper and has considerable potential.

It's just that, inevitably as a young loanee goalkeeper, he is still developing the ability to organise the defence in front of him, shouting and cajoling them into some sort of cohesive unit. This is where I'd really expect Higgs to make a difference.

What exactly do you base these "great signing" comments on??

The fact he's played 29 games in 2 and a half years? The fact he's not played a single game since October 2010? The fact he let in 6 on his penultimate game for Leeds? The fact he's been without a club since being released in May 2011? Or are you all getting excited just because its someone who you might have heard of before?!

Don't get me wrong, id have a permanent player over a loanee any day of the week, experience over youthfulness, and yes Walker's confidence must be shot playing behind our sieve-like defence! But lets not go overboard with the excitement of signing a goalkeeper with stats as above!!  Wink

I have seen him play before and always thought he was decent.

Whenever he played against us for Cheltenham he looked decent, that is all I personally can judge him on, hence, great signing Smiley

Sam Walkers brother on Twitter says Walker has been sent back to Chelsea.

AB has surprised us with his first signing. More to follow but I think Walker has done ok given the mess that is our defence.  What he doesn't do is come out for crosses enough and boss his defence but he is only young and has a good career in front of him.

Good signing, very happy with that. And many slammed the suggestion of dropping or replacing Walker with a full time keeper. Seems that those few that dare say it were actually correct.
I think most dismissed your comments because you don't go to games so have nothing really to base them on

Not impressed. Thought Walker had done well, ok Higgs could turn out to be better but he could easily turn out to be much worse, just seems a  g amble not worth taking when our central defence and central midfield are hopeless.

I can see where you're coming from, a decent acquisition with good experience and pedigree - yes, but a "great" signing is probably taking it too far, it must be with all the christmas spirit and all. I'd imagine he'll definitely be first choice which will mean the end of Sam Walkers loan spell, that would make sense given we've already got a more than competent back up keeper in Freddy Hall.

Good luck to Sam Walker though, I wasnt the most convinced when we signed him, but I can't fault him too much in his time here, not many of the many many many goals he conceded were down to him alone - I imagine he'll go on to have a good career at a much higher level and wouldnt be at all surprised to see him playing at League One level next season.

I don't think you can say he's a g amble, he's proven at this level and has always looked pretty impressive on the number of occasions I've seen him play. I think it's a great signing. We need a calm, experienced head there in our current fragile state. I've said before that Walker is a decent enough young keeper but his confidence looks shot and I think he'll benefit in the long term from being taken out of the firing line at the moment.
