I'm pretty sure the north stand (and the south stand for that matter) was designed so that you could literally take the roof off, add a second tier the same size as the existing stand, and then stick the roof back on again, without having to make any major structural adjustments to the existing stand, giving you the Southend-style structure. I'd imagine, therefore, that that would be cheaper, but in all honesty I really don't know, and I doubt the Buchanan guy does either.
It was sort of. The extension would have to go behind and above rather than straight on top. of course in that case the the roof would need to be bigger (following the Pythagorean theorem) but I'm sure you knew that. I think I've still got a copy of the original design for a horseshoe shaped stadium and athletics track somewhere, thank god that didnt end up getting built.

The North Stand is unpopular because it's so low, you've only got to look at any proper sized behind-the-goal stand and it's the seats low down that are the last to be filled. I don't mind sitting behind a goal, but it's got to be reasonably high up otherwise you haven't got a clue what's happening beyond the half way line at best.
I would love to have a north stand similar to the size of Wycombe's away end or the home end at Stockport. I would love to sit towards the back as you've suggested

Just to add sanity into the mix, any new build will cost about £1200 per seat with average facilities, if you want to have an office block or conference suite then you can, but the first pays for itself and the latter can be included in the cost.
Altering/extending an existing stand does not save money, and in some instances limits you. You could get a 3000 seat stand behind the North or South for around £3m by going to the right builder, but it is easier to knock down whats their and start again rather than building around it.
Discounts can be achieved depending on how big the overall job is, and that is why a development led whole stadium refit is better value than piecemeal change.

If we all donated just £20,000 an hour, we could probably get the building work underway for next Tuesday.
