Jansson - 6 out of 10 Looks the part but did nothing to inspire confidence. Spilt a shot for their 2nd and had a couple of rushes of blood with balls at the edge of the box. On 1st impressions, the sooner Dunn is fully fit the better
Johnson - 6 Had a difficult afternoon against the pacy Danny Stevens and did not make the trademark overlapping runs that we saw last year. Not convinced he is match fit having had limited pre-season opportunitites at Boro
Beckwith -6 Looked really comfortable for the 1st 40 mins and then the centre backs got badly exposed for all three goals. Recovered his composure as 2nd half went on but then got rattled a few times by Billy Kee.
Holt - 6.5 Was outstanding against target man Gritton for the 1st half but struggled a lot more in the 2nd when the pacy Benyon seemed to line up against him as part of a deliberate tactical change from Torquay. One or twice he was guilty of ball watching which is the reason he can't play LB in a 4.
Hall - 6.5 Defensively very solid but his distribution could have been better, particularly 2nd half. Didn't get a lot of protection from Davis all afternoon. A good acquisition.
Rodgers - 5 Did not offer anything going forward and ended up playing as a 2nd right back as Stevens caused panic everytime he picked the ball up. His indecision contributed to the 1st goal.
Gilligan - 5.5 Gilly and Osman v Wroe and Mansell was a decent battle with neither pair coming out on top. Broke up play as needed and looked to join in with the front men (which was hard given the ball did not stick up top until Purcell came on). Centre backs were exposed for all three goals and difficult to tell from where I was sat (in main stand) as to how much at fault the CM were, particulalry for the 2nd and 3rd
Osman - 5.5 Typical Osman performance, got a foot or head to most things, has great energy but his passing let's him down. For other comments - see Gilly.
Davis - 3 Was not at the races all game and seemed dis-interested / unable to follow the constant instructions he was getting from the bench and Hall. Failed to take on the full back when he did get into good positions. Would have been a 4 but for the disrepect he showed Sammo and the team both immediately after the substitution and by leaving for the changing rooms with 10 mins left to go
Guinan - 5 Not quick enough to get in behind the back 4 and Branston physically dominated him in the air. Good movement but his touch let him down - it was his mis-control that led to the 1st goal. Herbert and him jumped into each other and contrived to miss a very decent headed chance midway through 2nd half. Did not deserve to be jeered by away fans but on this outing he cannot be our primary striker this season
McKay - 5.5 Worked hard and seemed to enjoy playing alongside Purcell but offered little in the way of goal threat. Pity he does not have a nasty streak like Benyon as McKay seems 'nice' to play against whilst Benyon is horrid!
Subs
Jacobs - 8 A class apart. 2 great freekicks (one saved one against cross bar) and a constant threat. Seems to be getting stronger and quicker each time he plays. Is going to get kicked a lot this season if he keeps on making fullbacks look flat footed
Herbert - 5.5 His pace is a threat but his end product is missing. Needs to be told that if he is playing wide midifeld he needs to hold his position at the back post rather than get dragged into centre of goal - the Guinan chance and the one Herbert headed horribly wide later on were due to him getting into a bad position
Purcell - 6 Lively. Runs the channels well and holds the ball up. Him and Mckay look like they have the potential to be a decent partnership.
Sammo - 6 Would have been a 5 as by his own admission he thinks he got the line up wrong. However, deserves at least a 6 based on the bollocking he gave Davis. Was worth the entrance money alone to hear it.
Torquay Big and solid. Pace of Zebrowski, Benyon and Stevens was too much for us. They will be there or there abouts at the end of the season.

Agree with virtually all of this, think it sums the match up yesterday perfectly.
Perhaps a mark out of 10 for the stadium to considering you have given a mark for everything else, doubt it would get much more than 1.
Awful place to go, actually thought i might catch something in the toilets.

I think a 6 for Sammo is a bit generous. As Managers readily admit, they can't do anything once the players cross the line, but the team line-up and tatics are set by the manager. Now tatics, its hard to say whether they were wrong or we just failed to implement whatever plans we had to break Torquay down.
But the starting 11 was wrong. Not a lot else to say, I just can't see why he picked Guinan and why Wedderburn, Jacobs and Purcell didn't start. Possibly I can see the reasons for starting Jacobs on the bench, but it is becomng more and more apprent the lad can hack it at this level so he should have started. Picking Guinan and watching him get marked/bullied out of the game by Branston was a massive mangerial error.
Mind, at least Sammo owned up to these facts after the game, not often you hear that from a manager.
