Just 5 days before the start of the Premiership season Martin O'Neill resigns as manager of Aston Villa with immediate effect. No reason given, but maybe the impending sale of Milner and Young might have something to do with it.
Now....if only Capello would resign as manager of England with immediate effect......!!

I think O'Neil would get the players performing, its clear that the players dont want to play for Capello. I find the Villa situation bizare but would love O'Neil as England boss

Just a cautionary note but O'Neil's wife was quite ill at his later stages at Celtic so maybe it might not be a football related matter that sees him step down Huh?

I think it was the fact that he wanted more transfer money and when Lerner told him he would have to sell players in order to free up money or earn it he wasn't a happy boy. £30 million for James Milner and he would have had a transfer kitty. Couldn't have it both ways so O'Neill left.

Did you know that O'Neill has always left of his own accord in the last 4 "big" jobs he has had? Interesting

Didn't the fa say the next manager would be English?
I have to say you couldn't get away with such blatant racism in any other job offer.

It didnt surprise me too much, although i guess the timing could of been better. I personally felt for a while Martin O'Neill had gone stale at Villa, he just didnt seem to be getting the best of out some very good players he had at his disposal.

I'd probably agree with that comment.

Villa have had the same squad more or less for the last 3 seasons. They rely on players like Young and Abonglahor without ever really looking to strengthen and give them more competition. I mean Heskey for gawd's sake!

If you believe what you read in the Sunday Papers O'Neil could be about to replace Billy Davies at Nottingham Forest Huh?
