Looking at the winners of the jubilee awards of city status I noticed we did not even compete (of course our friends from down the M1/A5 did and thankfully didn't win) - over you Brian to tell us why Northampton is a progressive forward thinking town?

Corby, MK and Luton all applied. Given they handed out to Scotland which pot did Corby compete in?

because with about 4 knock backs in recent years and at a time when they're making cuts left right and center it'd be seen as a frivolous waste of money?

I think thats just about the measure of it, plus the councillors like to brag that Northampton is the largest town in England. Whether it is is debatable.

Chelmsford and Milton Keynes should have been disqualified from the start as any town that calls its self a City when it is not is like saying to the Queen "make us a city but if you don't we will still call ourselves a city anyhow". Slap in the face to Her Majesty should not be encouraged.

I thought it showed class from our councillors to refuse to enter into the race for city status, showing we're happy to work with what we have without status hang ups. We are the biggest town as more people actually live within the borough boundries of Northampton than any other town, others include local areas that are out side the boundries. For the record both Luton and Reading spent £200,000 chasing the prize, Milton Keynes just £160. The peoples republic of Shoe Town did not enter.

I think perhaps for the reason that you outlined above, that Northampton could well be the biggest town in England, and bigger population wise than some cities. The last count had the population of Northampton as 209,000 which is bigger than Sunderland, although Sunderland have a metropolitan population that is 360,000 or so. What we should get is unitarty status for the whole of Northants call ourselves Northants City and with a population of 700,000 we would p*ss all over loads of places!
