The 'rugby town' thing always pisses me and many off, if factoring in all the dorment Liverpool, United, Arsenal etc brigade in Northampton.
However, whilst Tigers fans might also be a little miffed at the same suggestion, given Hull is home to both KR and FC rugby league clubs, pretty firm argument for stating that Hull is indeed a 'rugby town...erm, city'!
As for Northampton peaking too soon (in the sixties) like Covid-19...we are allowed more than one peak!  Wink

Agreed. The Saints are a top flight club within their game and as such attract supporters from all over and get better gates as a result. Within the town though, I think a greater number of people at least have an interest in the Cobblers than they do in the Saints.

I think if you look at the Chron website they are a pretty good barometer of this. Bear in mind they are very advertising driven these days and will have all sorts of analytics tools in play that monitor the popular and unpopular stories to encourage more in the style of the well read ones and drive further clicks, because more clicks means more revenue. Yes, they cover both the Saints and the Cobblers but there is a greater volume of Cobblers related stories, and similarly there's a greater volume of Saints stories than Steelbacks ones. There's a reason for that!

Bloody Hell Sing, how dare you accuse me of being Beds in disguise! I never mentioned catchment areas, merely making the point that there is potential due to the towns population.

Of course population has a bearing on this (I know Burnley...) but otherwise I agree with most of your points.

Now, for Gods sake don't accuse me of being Evers in disguise  Grin

I think you are right about the rugby, I would think that the majority of their support is from the county rather than the town, but I still can't for the life of me see why we don't have the support of similar sized or even smaller towns.

I don't think the "rugby town" is a factor. I know people who go to both(whoever is at home that week).
As for another peak, it will only come if the money is there and we work on the sucess breeds support model.

I've just had a look at last season around Christmas.
Swindon a place about the same size as Northampton with no real competition from other sports were only getting between 1-1.5 thousand extra even though they were at that time top of the table. So it would appear that getting the locals interested is not a problem just for us.

Its from the area not the county. I know a few Saints fans, and they have told me, that they have buses coming in from all over East Anglia. It makes sense, given there is no other option for them to follow their sport.
One other point. I cant remember where we going, but I was standing waiting for our away coach to turn up at Jimmys End. This was 10am. As we stood there, a coach came past with away rugby fans. I think that it was Cardiff. We aimed to hit the pub at noon, they hit the ground at 10am. What are they doing down there to get people there so early? Five hours before kick off. I think that we have a lot to learn.

The Cobblers has always been the County's team, which benefits with sizeable towns with 70K= populations. A previous club secretary told me that 25% of our season ticket holders had a MK postcode, so potentially a large catchment area!

Nope, unless there’s a mention of the “well wishers” army you know you are safe. Actually, I miss old Dave.

Wrong, that’s the district or borough of Swindon NOT the town, Wikipedia is really not the best place to get information from either.
