I for one I am suprised at this, I have seen him a few times and thought he was a good 'keeper, I can remember him comming on, his first job was to face a penalty, which he saved !
penalty saving isnt really a judge of a keepers quality, its all about luck and luck isn't a thing so it just means he picked the right direction

Yeah... height, athleticism, hand strength, quickness, reaction speed and ability to read body movements are all meaningless.

Its just plain luck that when someone shoots to your left and you thought they would that you get down quick enough to save it.

I didn't say it was, he payed well that night, made some good saves. I just thought he would one play for us in the comming seasons. I expect Wilder  knows him more than we do.

and this is why fans celebrate like they've already scored when a penalty gets given? penalty saving is guesswork. thats why so many get scored. if it was down to keeper quality then more would be saved or at least it would be nearer 50/50

Dunn hardly forced his way in. That was Grays first mistake in not getting a keeper signed to replace Bunn

Well if young Dean manages to have a league career like the 'failure' that is Chris Dunn then he will have achieved more than I'd expect him to now.

But the difference is that CD remained a league goalie!

So you think Archer will make over 100 appearances for us and be named 'Hotel End Player of the Season'?

Think he joined Cambridge at the start of this season after they had won promotion back to the football league after playing a hand full of games in the championship for both Coventry and Yeovil.

Correct, he never played for Cambridge in the conference. He was a bench warmer for Cov and Yeovil beforehand.

So now its guesswork? I thought it was all luck? Next you'll be telling me there is some actual skill involved in being a keeper.

I don't think you understand how keeper quality can effect the number of penalty saves while still keeping it below 50%. Say increasing it from 20% of the time to 30% (note these are still less than 50%) if you have someone more skilled at saving penalties.

I said luck didn't exist so it was guesswork. If it was down to skill then a hell of a lot more kicks would get saved.

Luck does play a part in most players careers - take Tozer, plays all over the place and is rarely injured. Of course luck/good fortune plays a part; some people are born lucky!

There is no such thing as luck. Playing all over the place and rarely getting injured isn't down to luck.

 Wink

Good call - Chris Dunn was a decent young goalkeeper - simply played too often, to young in a struggling side - he was professional and dedicated as a kid, and credit to him that awful season did not deter him from a professional career.
The personal insults directed to him at the time and even now are in my opinion disgraceful and show a lack of basic respect for youngsters trying to make their mark.
No axe to grind against Archer but the difference here (and not his fault) was he was played in front of a better mature keeper and arguably a better home grown number two.

Both cases being manager error or stubbornness ........
