10 league games have now been played this season, let’s see how we are shaping up in comparison to last season’s campaign... 2012-2013 Won 3 Drawn 4 Lost 3 Scored 14 Conceded 13 13 points 2011-2012 Won 3 Drawn 3 Lost 4 Scored 12 Conceded 13 12 points • We have won 1 in the last 5 • We have taken 5 points from a possible 15 and 9 from a possible 24 • We have conceded the same amount of goals as last season when we had a back four consisting of Johnson, Westwood, Tozer and Corker (all of which were constantly slated on here) • Many of our fans are still saying they are yet to see us put in a good performance... All the facts suggest to me that we haven’t actually made any progress from last season, what do you all think? Is Aidy still our king? Was tragic Johnson really that tragic? Is the pressure mounting?

I expected nothing more than a mid table season and will be happy with it. To expect more with our finances is unrealistic. We have the funding to stay up and win a few/ lose a few but to push on we need quality. I've said it before but you need quality frontmen to get you up and we haven't invested in one. Freebies will get you stable. Youth team loans will not add enough and will lack consistency. Quality costs but does shine through. But like I said I've accepted it will take years for this to happen at Northampton but at least I've seen enough to believe we will have enough to avoid a third relegation scrap.

We should escape a relegation battle simply because there are some utter s***e sides in this league. As someone pointed out on the other thread after Gutts went off our midfield consisted on 3 wingers and a centre back. That indicates bad management and a lack of logic when recruiting new players.

Mk fans troll or not you cannot disagree we have assembled a squad with more wingers than the saints!!! Need a proven centre forward... Bring in a winger.(yes nicholls is decent but cutting in from the wing,a centre forward he ain't). Need a ball winning midfielder.... Bring in a winger. We now need two central midfield battlers. I wonder who will come in??? I wonder if lee nicholls was originally a winger

We have last seasons joint league top scorer so I don't understand your logic. We turned down a good transfer bid for him too which also shows his worth. Just because we didn't pay a fee for him is irrelevant.

It's all about opinions. One is an exceptional hold up player. The other is a winger learning his trade as a centre forward. Bayo had two shots all night and often seemed more content to try and play in others(a task he is exceptional at). Nicholls doesn't seem to make the runs that a striker makes but is a very good pacy wide man(he could in time be a great player to play behind the front two). My point is a proven striker with a track record could create his own chances and form a good partnership with bayo/platt without relying on them to create chances for them. We have lacked that sort of player for a long time(although Leon Mckenzie was just the ticket when fit). He was proven and quality. There must be someone out there in boothroyds contact book who fits the bill.

Not true, they paid fees for a number of their more important players like Danny Kedwell, Adam Barrett, Charlie Lee, Chris Whelpdale and of course Danny Jackman.

My opinion;
Though the comparison with last season's statistics suggest otherwise I believe we are improved in all areas - defence, goalkeeper(s), midfield and attack. Our performances are far better. We don't look as if we are about to be walloped (which we were regularly from now on under GJ last season).
The bad news is gates are down - average so far = 4,265 (in the league) as against 4,867 per game last season. That sort of shortfall is significant and will be ringing alarm bells in the board room (though I also agree that the Bunn money, sky money, Jacobs money are all positives).
Some good signings in the close season - Widdowson, Artell, Alex Nicholls, Hackett, Lee Nicholls (on loan). Others not yet convinced about though I think Moult could come good.
We look mid-table to me and no better at present.

Our mid table position after 10 games is probably a fair reflection of our average league 2 side.
I don't think any better could have been expected given the weaknesses in our midfield and defence.
Midfield Going into the season with a centre midfield combination of Harding, Guttridge & Tozer was always going to be a bit of a struggle. Harding is a slightly above average player at this level, Guttridge is an average palyer at this level and Tozer is a below average player at this level who must only be in the team to take long throws. Not one of these players would have got close to getting in our previous promotion side. We need some real quality in the middle of the park, someone who has the ability to dominate and influence a game. I hope AB doesn't bring in another young loan player from a higher side, that's been the beginning of our downfall in previous seasons.
Defence It's been a concern all season and far too many soft goals are being conceeded. There's got to be a point when you realise that some players are not good enough. Langmead & Johnson seem to have a bit of cult status amongst fans but I don't think either are good enough for a promotion challenging team. A short term fix might be to change to 3 at the back and put some pace in alongside Artell & Langmead.
Plenty to improve on over the next 10 games.
