After witnessing yet another debacle, this time at the hands, head and feet of the mighty Macclesfield, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the problem. Then why does the management persist in making the same naive mistakes time after time ? There is no way on earth that a squad is being assembled that will get us out of this abysmal division.Yes, we'll do well in cups and against teams who give you space and let you play, but the vast majority of teams in this division don't play that way.It is essential that we get a bit of strength into the squad in al departments, or it will continue to be a season of real struggle.

I dont know so much, if you look at the players and "strength" then i'd say both Beckwith and Holt in defence, Osman and Wedderburn in midfield, and McKenzie and Guinan up front have that "strength". Maybe you've got to play them al, or most of them at leastl in the same game...make it ugly like so many other teams do!! We do though have a number of lightweight players in our team who are getting bullied out of games at League two level, yet like you say, if they have the time and space then they can produce. As the ground gets heavier, the weather worse etc, I cant see the situation getting any easier!! I think the cup run has taken peoples eyes off the ball!! Last season in our first 10 games we'd amassed 10 points.....this season we've picked up 10 points from our first 10 games too! of course, by this stage last season we'd sacked a manager and had a caretaker in charge!

I really am questioning what Crosby's role in this is - either he is telling Sammo some home truths and he ignores them or he does not know what he is doing.
Maybe the fact that side is sooo young the massive highs and lows will be a result of this. As much as it bored me to death under Calderwood we got promoted on a back bone of experience, Dyche, Jess, Taylor, McGleish.

It all comes back to the budget though doesn't it? Older players cost more money. A 20 year old with the same ability as a 30 year old will be on half the money.
Sammo has gone down the youth road and on the whole I agree with it. IF we are to go back up at some point, our only chance of progressing at the next level is if we have a young improving side. Calderwood got us up but the side was old and it had to be rebuilt.
HOWEVER, there is an argument for one or two experienced pro's - David Martin types - that would gel the side together. Cant see it happening though unfortunately.

Completely agree the trouble is we have experienced players in the squad, Hall and Mckenzie on present form arent good enough to get in the team and Guinan and Hinton just arent good enough.

Its pretty simple - we need a big, nasty bastard in midfield and another one up top.

I think age is the point. I reckon a pro player is generally at his prime between age 24 and 29, how many in our squad fit in that range?

It's easy from the sidelines, isn't it? You just need to ask for the opposite of what we've got. Play ugly/pass it around. Too old/can't win with kids. Small squad/we don't need so many.
We're so s*** I wonder you're not all out there putting your knowledge to use in local football.

For any team to successfully perform at what ever level they are playing at you need a strong solid spine thru the team. ie a solid goal keeper a solid centre half, someone (or two ) solid in midfield and someone up front who can convert those one or two chances that come in almost every game no matter how the team might be playing. We have got better players than most in all the other positions but until we get the experience, mongrel, and solidness to the spine of our team we will not get the consistent results to get out of this league. IMO this is true even though on average our players are technically better than probably every other team in this league .

The success in the cup this season has come at the result of the opposition teams making many changes in team line up and playing dysfunctionally as a result. Up against a well drilled organised team who have done there homework on our players such as Macclesfield and we were nothing. Further there was no plan B.

What is amazing is how the confidence flowed for 70 minutes v Chesterfield. We looked like world beaters that evening until they scored. That seemed to knock everything out of us.

I think we seem to lack the ability to work out how to beat sides. If we think we can play football and win then we do and if it isn't working we dont change it, if we are up against a team that doesnt play football we revert to hoof ball and again when it doesnt work we dont change it.
Personally i don't think Sammo/Crosby are going to be up to the job, there, i said it.
