What do the cricketing fraternity on here think of Englands chances in the upcoming Ashes series? I am a little surprised by the inclusion of Root and more so by his elevation to opening with Cook. What other possible weak links can you see?

Can only see positives for the series, Root is naturally an opener so don`t see an issue with it. The inclusion of Onions could be a masterstroke. We have so much more strength in every department and even the Aussies have roped in a "Foreigner" to at least have a spinner that is up to standard.
The Aussies will have to sledge like they never have before to stay in any test match.
Over confidence and matching the sledging will be our only worries.

I agree with you on the over confidence point. With the Aussies recent form we are without a doubt favourites, but as you say the sledging will be a factor for the greener England players. Onions is I think a very underated bowler and he is almost Bothamesc in his ability to turn matches.

If the series was being played over there then I probably wouldn't have picked Onions. But with slightly greener wickets over here then it would be a easier decision to pick him.
But saying all that I don't know for definite what 11 I would pick. Its all going to be wicket dependant. as ability wise as I said before we have so much more strength in all areas than I think I can ever remember that it shouldn't be problem. Long gone are the days when Ashley Giles was the "best" spin bowler in the country and Ricky Fecking Clarke was considered an international cricketer.

True what you say about the wickets. With this forecast hot spell coming I think the spinners are going to be the key.

The weather will prevent a 10-0 drubbing in at least one test...

Can't see why there needs to be much debate over the England XI, it'll be: Cook, Root, Trott, KP, Bell, Bairstow, Prior, Broad, Swann, Finn, Anderson.
Only slight doubt in that team is Bairstow at 6. Compton has been harshly treated too.

both teams bowling are their strong suits.
for all the hype over swann, he averages over 40 in ashes tests - and even worse at his home ground - so see what happens.
i think we will win, each game will be tight, as both batting line ups can implode................but could still see 5-0 as well.
that said, i hope we hammer them.
not sure why all the talk on this thread over onions - he is 3rd choice for the 1 seamer slot - if he plays, we wont win...........lost too much pace since his injury.

Not exactly the start needed to hand out a whitewash. This morning session is key to England taking the upper hand. I just hope Broad is fit to bowl so we can make best use of any dampness in the pitch first thing.

5 wickets in an hour suggests the upper hand has been reclaimed In hindsight, I shouldn't have commented. They lead at lunch

When they went 9 down I thought what shame for those who had tickets for days 4 and 5!

I just hope that we can now build on the lead. They need to be chasing 275 at least for us to have a chance of victory.

A very entertaining test thus far. Good Job by Cook and KP to steady the ship this evening. Bat till tea tomorrow if we can, with a decent lead of 275+ then stick the Aussies in for the last hour or so and pile on the pressure.

A 200 run lead might be enough on day four with Swanny on that wicket, but as you say 275 would probably be a guarantee. Well done to young Ashton, shame he pulled that straight down Swanny's throat!

I think England need to bad for 4 more sessions to take an Australia win out of the equation.

If the second test is anywhere near as good as last weeks, then we will be in for a treat. Rumours of the rift can't help the Aussie camp morale, and I fancy England to make it 2-0.

Not a great start. Harris is a good selection for the Aussies.
