our first choice strike duo (Platt and Nicholls).
Surely not! they were the strike partnership at the start of last season and were a complete failure, Bayo had to keep coming off the bench to rescue the team before Platt was finally dropped.

Uninspiring pre-seasons I can cope with, no problem.
It's uninspiring seasons that annoy me.

But that's the pre-season we've had! We can only judge the players in the games they've played, surely?
Just out of interest, what would have had to have happened this pre-season to inspire you?
As they say, you can only beat whats put in front of you. Our pre-season results have gone to form, thats all Im saying. To answer your question. The Wembley experience left a huge cloud hanging over the club, it really was that bad. For that cloud to have lifted a few exciting signings (2 or 3 ideally) would have helped. But for weeks we had nothing. The apparent budget cuts. Then the Coventry crap. Trialist after Trialist. In 8 weeks, quite frankly sod all has actually happened! Perhaps things will change in the next week but so far its been utterly un-inspiring! That said, I am not actually negative about our prospects, you may have seen on other posts of mine that Im rather balanced about things. I will be at York to see how we get on. I haven't been to any of the pre-season matches, I gave up them a few years ago. But to be fair THAT MATCH killed me. Im sure my enthusiasm will return by late August but it still feels too early for the season to start. Has it ever started earlier than August 3rd? !

I think the term 'trialist' tends to alter fans' perceptions a bit. If we had signed the likes of Deegan straight of the bat then he might have seemed like a better/more exciting prospect.
If we had signed a striker of note, and Langmead and Hackett were fit then I would be pretty happy with developments.

So which two or three signings would've excited you?

I'm happy with Carter, Infact I'm happy with all of the signings. But I'm not excited by them.
Last year I was excited at the Hackett signing as well as Widdowson and we were clearly strongly than when we ended the previous season. Collectively this time round we are currently weaker, of course that could change over the course of the next week!

I agree it hasn't been amazing but the squad is shaping up nicely! I think perhaps a striker, winger and a player who can play in any position at the back will sort us out for the season. You have to remember he shouldn't have to break budget now, what happens come January some players didn't turn out how they expected, money saved now could help us later in the season

http://www.exeweb.com/forums/showthread.php?51524-Bad-news-threadRead this for an uninspiring pre-season! (was trying to read up on Amankwaah, and all there fans think they're getting relegated). And then remember when AFC Wimbledon labelled Chris Arthur as an exciting signing? Torquay have signed Harding. This makes our pre season look much much more positive!

DC - Even I got over that defeat by end of June - at least it wasn't Chelts or Burton Albion two lesser clubs

Crewe are in for a bad season if the guilt is proven,half their first team could be out. Hope Abdul isn't involved.

The way I look at it is this;
AB (and pretty much everyone else) says you need a strong spine 1st and foremost;
1. We've lost Lee Nicholls and gained Matt Duke (gone from an excellent if occasionally erratic goalkeeper to a good, relatively consistent one). 2. We've lost our 1st choice central defenders, one permanently and one for 3 months, the latter of which is our Captain, source of useful goals and was our best player last season. 3. Our central midfield looks like it should be stronger -the proof will be in it's eating. 4. We have no reliable Centre Forward who will worry anyone.
On top of that we have injuries to three of our most gifted performers (Hackett & O'Donovan - who probably won't be fully fit until September; Alex Nicholls - a long term worry). We also still have Platt and Demontagnac considered very much part of our plans which worries me.
Uninspired ? Yes.
Grounds for optimism ? Yes - Collins, Hornby and Widdowson should all get better than we've seen to date. AB won't keep picking players who don't perform (results will force his hand especially in the early weeks of the season). We must have a significant amount set aside for a Centre Forward.

One of the accused comes across as a horrible little prick on twitter. If ever a club needed to get someone in to advise their players on the dos and don'ts of social media its that one.
