Seen a lot of comments like that on Twitter and the Oxford board and on the face of it would agree. However dig deeper and he had a contract till the end of the season with the only possible chance of renewal being promotion. Fans were starting to turn against him. Don't get the impression any significant funds were available and also don't get the impression his relationship with their chairman was in the best of health.
Here you have a club that is expanding. Funds for players. A chance to build a team. A very supportive chairman. Probably a decent length and well paid contract. The chance of being a hero if he saves us and none of the blame if we go down. It's also fairly close to his current workplace/home?
You've got it nailed perfectly there MCHammer. This blog post by a fan sums the whole situation up pretty well in my opinion.
http://oxblogger.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/wilder-commits-career-suicide-for-his.htmlDoes seem strange he would give up a possible promotion for his CV to take on a potential relegation. But football is a funny old game.
For what it is worth - I think he will keep you up. Did a great job at our place, some fantastic memories from his FIVE years in charge. Perhaps things had grown stale over the last 12 months - relationship with some fans, chairman and others bordering on questionable.
Nice to see, the mess of Saturday night is sorted and we have managed to get some sort of compensation fee.
Best of luck for the rest of the season but I think Mr Wilder will keep you up with ease.
