It doesn't alter the fact that Newcastle are still the premier club in the northeast though does it?

Probably find it easier to laugh if I actually cared about something as trivial as football in the north East

Don't rise to it Mackem. In all fairness, I thought the same until I moved up here 10 years ago. Newcastle were always thought of as the premier club of the north east, mainly due to Keegan and the fact that they used to sell out every game, had a waiting list for a season ticket etc.

In terms of size, NUFC are larger, they have more fans bother to go and watch them (the 3rd largest average support in England and 10th largest in Europe last season), and I would say that they're more well known world wide (thanks largely to Keegan etc). However, would I rather be associated with NUFC or SAFC?

SAFC have infinitely more class (thanks largely, from that I can tell, to Quinny's time at the club), know how to treat supporters, and are generally well known in the North East as being a 'community' club, with very much a family orientated outlook. Newcastle are well known as a club that doesn't care for the fans, rips them off at every opportunity, and has a chairman who cares little about the 'football' side of the 'business'. . . . . . from a business point of view, you have to say he's doing a VERY good job.

Until SAFC can finish above NUFC on a regular basis (which isn't far away under Gus), I would say that you'd have to say that NUFC are the North East's 'top' team. However, they are a club who seem happy to try to finish 8th every year. They're not bothered about having cup runs etc. However, SAFC definitely have the upper hand of the 2 head to head. The derby on Saturday was an annihilation, even the illegitimate one said that Sunderland deserved to win by more!

So don't rise to the bait, sit tight, enjoy the Wembley day out (the Mags won't have that for a while!), and be safe in the knowledge that SAFC is now in safe hands.

Probably because Newcastle have the largest stadium in the north east, have spent 82 seasons in the top flight, won the FA cup six times, didn't appoint Paolo Dicanio as manager which shows a greater deal of class to the watching world that is why. Also calling a team "black cats" when you play in red.

i would give you a history lesson but doubt you would be interested but lets just say currently we have been in the prem longer than newcastle & i grant you Di Canio was a mistake which Gus is starting to put right roll on March 2nd

Well you could educate me as to why Sunderland are the premier club in the north east? but I think that the general consensus is that Newcastle are.

I'm living in Newcastle and having followed the local media both teams get equal coverage up here. Fan base wise though Newcastle win hands down. Also whilst a lot of the locals up here don't like Mike Ashley he is a businessman and I admire the tough decisions he makes, even if they aren't popular with the fans

Arguing who are the premier club in the North East out of Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesboro, Darlington, Hartlepool and Berwick?   Roll Eyes

Who is the highest placed club in London is more of an honour and justifiable argument.   Tongue
