This is getting better!
This century the points needed to finish 1 point outside the bottom two have varied between 38-52. Only twice have 50+ been needed, 2005/6 and last season. The average is 46. So, we need 17pts to equal the average or 23 points to be sure from our last 15 games.
To get there I'm going:
Wins (all home): Bury, Mansfield, Portsmouth, Rochdale & Wimbledon = 15 points. Draws: Bristol Rovers, Burton, Oxford, Southend (all home) & Accrington, Dagenham, Morecambe, & Wycombe (all away) = 8 points Defeats: (all away) Exeter, & Scunthorpe.
Now for me, that's do able and whilst we wont win all those home games I'm sure we could turn some of the draws into victories and in all likelihood we wont need 52 points.
So despite the table presently looking bleak, I'm still optimistic.

If we win ten of those were safe.

You think we need 59 points to be safe? Interesting Polly.

I'm not sure but I'm willing to bet that ten wins and five losses WOULD keep us up.

Only 5 of those games are against sides currently in the top ten.

Torquay are back as favourites for the drop, followed by us and Wycombe. Pompey look a good price at 9/1.

You didn't see them against us at Christmas , we fielded what I think was the weakest side we've put out this season , because they were our only available players , and we still should have won the match.

Every one above the drop zone has picked up a bit, we will need a good run to even stay in touching distance.

I really believe that the current available team/squad is at worst a mid table side 'on paper'. Since CW took over...2 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats. 3 of the 5 games have been away.
As many of us cited prior to CW's appointment though, its going to take 'top half' form for the remainder of the season to get us out of this hole. The question is...can we do that? Because we are running out of games.
This week is massive. Win the 2 home matches...likely hood is that we will be 2nd from bottom and have a clutch of teams within 3 or 4 points above us. So instead of it being a '2 from 3' scenario it will become a '2 from 6 scenario' if that makes sense. All of a sudden we will have the odds back in our favour. 3 points or less...and we've got two very tough away games coming up and again, we could end up being cut adrift with just 11 matches to go.
On balance though, I think we will stay up. But we will know for sure what our realistic chances are come 5pm next Saturday.

Despite all this speculation about how many we need to win to stay up it will ultimately depend on how the teams currently above us perform as well. We will definately need others results to favour us as well as winning ourselves. Sorry , but I cant see the point of bandying about previous seasons points totals as a reflection of what is happening now. In this crazy league anyone can beat anyone else , there is no yardstick.

As long as we can keep zan the man we will have a good chance. Also loved seeing the new hard to beat with a touch of nastiness many of the players exhibited yesterday. Maintain this team spirit and attitude, teams wont enjoy playing us.
Its going to the wire, but very doable.
My prediction we survive by 1 point, despite losing our last game. NGH A&E report long waiting times due to the amounts of prolapsed arsse holes arriving from the Sixfields area.

I'd say that, despite our current position, our fate is still very much in our own hands. Why? Because apart from anything else, many of the bottom of the table strugglers still have to play each other, so the scope for them to pull clear en masse will be limited. We will also have the opportunity to take points off Bury, Mansfield, Portsmouth, Bristol Rovers, Accrington and Wycombe ourselves. The most important thing is that we as a fanbase keep believing and fighting. The arrival of Wilder and the likes of Sinclair, Ravenhill and now Diamond have given us some much needed momentum at a crucial time. We will inevitably face some setbacks along the way, but the crucial thing is not to give in to the doom merchants and keep positive until the end of that game against Oxford.

110% agree. United fans to keep everyone believing!! If you take a look at the Torquay forum they have thrown in the towel big time. Clearly they are doomed with this attitude.... http://forum.torquayfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6885&start=150

We now have 11 points from our last ten games. Wycombe have 7, Torquay 8 and Portsmouth also 11. Bury Accrington Bristol and Mansfield have all obtained 14 or more. On current form then, its between us and the three above us.
