A view from the east

Noticed last night that the ball boys are getting even younger , the three on the east touchline looked no more than 8 or 9 years of age , if that. My concern is that at one point late in the second half when Southend were chasing the game a defender and a ball boy both rushed to retrieve a ball which nearly resulted in a collision. I know these young lads must be volunteers and good on them but you have to fear for their safety with some of the tackles that fly in around the touchline. They are sandwiched between play and the barrier and are at risk. Do we really need them to be there anyway ? anything that hits the barrier the players could retrieve themselves and if it goes over the crowd chuck it back. Surely the club could find some other way to allow them to volunteer. ( and no I'm not part of the health and safety mob just a concerned grandad )

Very good point. When you think a child could be easily in a collision with a sixteen stone pro, the consequences could be tragic. Do the FA have rules about this?

No idea why the ball boy was rushing to get the ball late on in the second half. He should have been taking his time and chilling out.

How many years have ball boys been used at football grounds around the country at all levels, does it really need changing ? If any thing NTFC never have enough.

Two wins on the bounce ... must find something to moan about! My thoughts too. My son was one of the lads on the east stand last night. He's 11... plays for the dev team... heads the ball like a bullet and I can assure you that the only thing he worries about sitting over there is coming home needing therapy due to the incessant whining he hears

Still remember the Bristol Rovers play off game where the Youth team were sent out by Atkins to be ball boys. As soon as took the lead they all 'mysteriously' disappeared back in to the crowd. I appreciate they are only kids doing a good job for nothing but think they sometimes need to be a bit more savvy

Some years ago when the cobblers were playing at Watford Vicarage road there were no ball boys and I remember the ref getting shirty with one of the cobblers players because he didn't retrieve the ball quick enough. Also I remember a game at sixfields when a ball boy retrieved the ball which looked as if it were going out from the pitch, the opposition player complained to the ref who just waved it away.

Children shouldn't be at footbal games at all, can you imagine if one fell over. Wonder if there are any FA rules about children walking in football grounds.

As long as they don't do anything that encourages them to be competitive and that they all play nicely you should be ok.

Shouldn't be playing with others though, one of them could be a bad influence and then the good child may grow up and become a ball boy... and we all know how dangerous that lifestyle is.

I remember us chanting where have your ball boys gone and someone standing up and shouting that they were all locked in Elton's garage! Most amusing at the time. Dean Peer equalising in front of 3000 travelling Cobblers, happy days!
