I have a mate up Sunderland way. Apparently they are still knocking one out at the thought of beating Chelsea at home and praying an ex Chelsea boy keeps them up.

Down at Stamford Bridge the choice is a bit better. They have Premier League titles, FA cup wins, League cup wins, Europa cup wins and Champions League wins to get off on.

Mind you.. It must hard for the Sunderland lads. They can't even sell their tickets when Gus needs them most....

 Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

In fairness, selling 42,000 for a bottom of the table game isn't bad. And their 6 League Titles is better than Chelsea's tally. . . . . . is your mate a Mag by any chance?  Wink

Sunderland beating Chelsea and, more impressively in my opinion, taking a point at the Etihad, is massive in their survival bid. . . . . . and at least the Mackem's are "knocking one out" at something that their own team has done, rather than doing so at the expense of Steven Gerrard  Roll Eyes . . . . . . whatever floats your boat though, I guess  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin (is that enough  Grin 's)

I said premier league titles. I didn't realise you wanted a comparison with pre WW1 when about ten actual teams competed for it. Just have a read below and weep. There really is no comparison..  Grin Grin

I don't want you taking this to heart. I support/love the Cobblers, but love to watch Chelsea as well. You support two shyte teams. It's not that far apart.

Strange that. But There's no denying we have struggled against the shyte sides this year. I'll give that.

Let's call it quits. You pop along and concentrate on Gus (who's dream is to manage Chelsea) keeping you up. I'll keep an eye on Chelsea in the title race and Europe...

Didn't Sunderland beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a few years ago as well? Was it 3-0? I'm only asking.

Loving how you've quoted the Sheriff of London Charity shield there  Grin

Also love how easy it is to get a rise out of a glory supporter, who always come up with the same argument. - I stated a few years ago, and I'll do so again now for your benefit;- Give me Northampton Town over ANY top Premier League team any day of the week. The feeling I got when we stayed up at Shrewsbury, walked out at Wembley for the first time in our history (not to mention won that match the way we did), beat Liverpool at Anfield, those are the feelings that NONE of the supporters of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal et al will never have. Fair enough, I'll not see us lift the European Cup, but because these feelings of elation happen so infrequently, that makes them all the more special to me.

I imagine that proper Sunderland fans (of which I am not one, although I do enjoy going to watch them) feel the same way. To them, getting to Wembley was enough. Yes, it would have been nice to have won a trophy, but beating Chelsea in the Quarters, and Manchester Utd in the Semi's meant that they got their prize of a Wembley day out, along with everything that goes with that. My Man Utd supporting mates were gutted to lose in the Semi's to Sunderland. . . . . but would they have been there at the final? No. . . . .because to them, as I suspect it is with you, it's "just another final" that they EXPECTED to be in. . . . . expectation invariably leads to disappointment.

This thread, as with most things with people who follow one of the big 4, is all about something that's actually nothing to do with your own club. It's because enjoy revelling in the misfortune of someone who is in no way associated with you, rather than concentrating on your own achievements / misgivings.

very well put but its the other way round for me as Sunderland are my main team the elation i felt when Sunderland got to Wembley this year is only something fans who support the less successful clubs can identify with the same will apply to the more regular fans than me  on Saturday if the Cobblers manage to stay up

Glory supporter....??

Most who know me on here would laugh in your face at that statement. I have followed both Chelsea and a Cobblers through some of the most difficult times in their history. I followed Chelsea when they never had a pot to pi$$ in. Cobblers have had the lions share of my time for some time now. I'd stack my a Cobblers supporting record against 90% on here and probably wipe the floor with them.

As for getting a rise. You haven't got a rise. I'm just responding to a couple of pr@ts who have highjacked a thread that had nothing to do with Sunderland. Just because they got a whiff of the big time for a few minutes this season and wanted to bask in it.

You're on this thread because those victories meant the world to you. That's a huge compliment to Chelsea FC and any Chelsea supporter. You was both dying for your moment in the sun. And you grabbed it on a thread that had fcuk all to do with the lesser side of the North East. And that's saying something.

You're welcome to keep the backhanded compliments coming though.

Wasn't me that brought Sunderland in to this thread mate. I also didn't bring Chelsea in to it. I'm on this thread because I wondered what the Gerrard topic was all about. I gave my opinion on something that was already being discussed, and brought the topic back to Gerrard, which I believe was what the point of this thread (if there is a point to a thread in which the OP doesn't actually contain any words).

You're also quite correct, I don't know you, or why you support both Chelsea and Northampton. For myself, I support Northampton Town. I always have done, and I always will do. I've been through the tough times, put money in buckets, had to sit and watch my club almost destroyed by MM etc, and that made the relative highs of our Wembley trips all the more special and enjoyable. I now live in Sunderland, and have done for the past 10 years. I live less than a mile from the Stadium of Light, and all of my in-laws are big Sunderland supporters, hence why I spend a Saturday afternoon watching them (or Gateshead if they're at home and Sunderland are not). Where did I sit when we played Sunderland in 2008? The away end of course. Do I still get to as many games at Sixfields as I can? Too damn right I do. Will I be there on Saturday? Of course I will be.

Back on topic, I still don't know why anyone would create a topic with a one word title, and then no actual words in the body of the message, but maybe that's just me expecting too much in the way of sensible, literate discussion. It appears that, instead, relying on emoticons and swear words seems to be the order of the day on this particular thread.  Roll Eyes for forks sake. . .

Slightly off topic, but seeing as someone brought up Chelsea, I hope they win tonight. I always used to quite like them back in the day. Way before Abramovic became involved, although I can certainly see what he's done at, and for, the club, and before Mourinho came back for his second stint. I don't like the way he handles himself in adversity, he seems to lack a certain class (please don't accuse me of jealousy, I just don't think he's a very nice loser). - So good luck for tonight, I hope you get to your Champions League final. - My mind, however, is firmly on Saturday afternoon, 3pm, Sixfields.

It's weird, I want Chelsea to win tonight (English and all that) ... but I really don't want a repeat of the last game. And if they get to the final, a repeat of their last final. They have become one of the most boring teams to watch in recent years, which is a massive shame with the likes of Willian Hazard and Oscar all class acts.

agree with most of that but i'm glad Chelsea are out as for such a talented side they can be so boring to watch, Hazzard gave 1 of the best performances i've seen by a visiting player @ Sunderland & Willian also impressed me with his work rate to match with his undoubted skill

I don't really care but out of all of them I'd like Liverpool to win the league. They appear to have more English players in their team.

With the exception of your thoughts on Mourinho, I agree entirely. I just like the bloke..

He's definitely a Marmite type character. When he first arrived (2004?) I thought he was excellent. He came here with a lot of confidence / arrogance, and delivered on pretty much every promise he made. Since his return, however, he's just made himself look a bit bitter. Slagging off Sam Allardyce (can't stand that bloke, by the way) for his tactics when West Ham played them. Then deploying pretty much the same tactics when Chelsea played Liverpool last weekend. Doing that would have been bad enough, but to then declare it to be a tactical masterclass just took the pish. - Don't get me wrong, I admire teams that dig in and get a result, however it comes. But to sl@g other teams off for doing it when you do it yourself doesn't sit well with me.
