A waste of money... yes
But not on the fountain... on the people that planned for it, built it and are now postponing it

Wazza. I have to agree. It seems to me that all you need is to be a commy/fag/subversive and you have ajob for life f***ing things up for normal people. Sounds like the time when I work for the Post Office Telephones(and yes I am that old).

Another example of someing being made too complex - we have a great market square so why dont make it a great Market and just focus on markets stalls.

I just find it farcical that so much seems to be done in Northampton without the public's proper input.
Although there was at least some public consultation on this unlike the dreadful theatre redevelopment, all too often you seem to have to search through pages of bollocks in a website galaxy, far, far away to actually submit your views. Even then it's made unnecessarily complicated, consultation needs to be done in a much more open and well publicised manner - Not just in some silly book tucked away in some silly place for a couple of days at the most. Whenever I try to look up something on the Council's website it always seems to be bafflingly cluttered and inaccessible.
Saying that, I and a few others made our feeling reasonably clear on this issue. But do they listen? Do they heck. Although the market-traders have been shabbily treated at times, it's clear that the market has fallen behind times in alot of respects and does need to be brought into the 21st century. (Though at least the Council are starting to advertise the place now - I thought previously they must be ashamed of the place or something.) Although personally, I feel that a covered/indoor market may be the best way to move forward, there was no doubt to me that this fountain was a good oppoortunity to breathe fresh life into the Market square. So what do they do... hm let's think.
a) build a lasting monument/fountain/etc. central to the square. Although possibly logistically difficult - the benefits would be enormous, dragging people close to the market, and making a statement right at Northampton's heart. Beating sun shining down as kids run through our very own version of Somerset House. Giving the square new character, new vibrancy, new hope. A place to be proud of again.
Or um...
b) do it the Northampton way, always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Staring meekly from a corner entrance - An unquestionable look of jealousy written in the weak surroundings as it stares cautiously at the splendid square - Water leaking pathetically and infrequently only to never drain away the tears of sorrow. Still - what a fine backdrop! The attractive newsagent's never ceases to amaze. Public open-mouthed with wonderment - Quick quick! Better pop in for a disposable camera. One can only imagine what will last longer. The camera or the fountain?
Sigh... Northampton.... sigh.
