Title: Wigan at home Tuesday 9th February 2021 REARRANGED
Post by: GrangeParkCobbler on January 27, 2021, 19:36:35 pm
Weather/pitch permitting we play Wigan at home on Saturday. The Latics are currently below us in the table, two points behind us in 23rd place.
They lost their Premier League place in 2013 and have been on the slide since, despite relegation they did win the FA Cup in 2013 too, and played in Europe the following season as a Championship side. They went down to League 1, went back up to the Championship but came back down again and coupled with a spell in administration currently standing at seven months they find themselves struggling for their existence at present. A new takeover deal is in the offing though so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Their form this season has not been good, they went on a 13 game winless run earlier in the season, however things have actually picked up recently with only two defeats in their last seven games, however there has only been one win in that sequence too! Last time out they lost 5-0 at home to Blackpool. They are fielding a number of young inexperienced players at the moment as most of their better players have left as a result of costcutting.
Away from home they've won three league games, Burton was one but the other two were perhaps more surprising....Sunderland and Portsmouth.
Top current scorer for the Latics is former Manchester United player Will Keane, he's scored six goals in 14 appearances this season so looks like a threat, he is joined up front by 19 year old Kyle Joseph who has five goals, three of those coming in that win at Burton last month.  Joe Garner actually still leads the way in the charts with seven goals but he left the club by mutual consent last month and moved to Cyprus to continue his footballing career. Kai Naismith is another recent departure, moving to Luton on a free a couple of weeks ago.

Wigan only joined the League back in 1978 when they finished second to Boston United in the Northern Premier League, Boston's ground at that time was not up to scratch and Wigan were "elected" to the league on a second vote replacing Southport. As a result of their shortish league history and the fact they went all the way up to the top division, we have met them on relatively few occasions.
A total of 36 meetings over the years, and The Cobblers have won just six. Our 3-2 win there earlier in the season snapped a seven game losing streak against them. They have won on their last four visits to Sixfields and in fact we did not score a goal against them in any of those games. We've beaten them three times at home, they've won 7 on our patch with seven draws.
Our last meeting at Sixfields was on New Years Day 2018, we slipped to a 1-0 defeat thanks to an early Nick Powell goal. Shaun McWilliams started that game for the Cobblers, with Sam Hoskins coming off the bench in the second half, they are the only two survivors in our squad three years on.

Referee Marc Edwards is in his second season as a Football League ref, so far this season he has handled 18 games and handed out 62 yellows cards but no reds. He has only reffed us once before, that was last seasons 2-0 home defeat by Cheltenham in the playoff semi final. This will be his second time officiating Wigan this season having been in charge of their 4-3 home win over Accrington some seven weeks ago.

Big match. The improved performances are good to see, but if they dont translate in to results against other relegation rivals then we're really in the mire.

No better time for us to get our first saturday home league win.
Despite losing a lot of players and having to field several youngsters Wigan have still had some good results but have been inconsistent. They lost 0-5 at home to a Blackpool side missing 10 players through injury and covid on tuesday and had previously lost at home to Rochdale in mid december by the same score. However, inbetween these results they went 5 games unbeaten, drawing at home with Shrewsbury and Fleetwood, drawing away at Rochdale and Fleetwood and winning at Burton. They also had 2 excellent wins in early december against Accrington at home and Sunderland away.
Wigan's away record is similar to ours but having lost 6 of their first 7 away games and only scoring twice they have not lost any of their last 4 scoring 9 times. They have only kept 1 away clean sheet but we have failed to score in 8 of our 12 home games.
Assuming none of our injured players are fit to return the only changes I would make to tuesdays team would be to play Watson behind the front 2 after his cameo against Fleetwood when he appeared to have got his hunger back and he is always capable of getting on the score sheet. Up front I would give Rose another chance alongside either Edmondson or Hoskins. We know Sam is capable of a clinical finish in the penalty area by his goals at Wembley and at Burton last season, also with his penalty taking.

If memory serves me...Wigan Athletic were the second visitors to the brand new, swanky Sixfields.

A 🌈 arced over the East Stand, and a 7000 plus crowd saw a Cobblers victory!
Also, if remember, was one of the very few if only games at Sixfields where cash was taken at the turnstiles.

Yes - a 1-0 win with Neil Grayson getting the goal.

I also remember how impressed I was with the new stadium.

The company I was with was still paying about 60 persons weekly wages in cash.

From Wigan came the souls to see
The new road builds of Coventry
Then further south these greebos sank
And landed on the sixplots bank
Black country vibes
And Upton scribes
Would signal no surrender here
We care less now than once we did
Our covid chums are safely hid
We will not wander further off
One nil is writ before we cough.

Saturday AM, on ITV4 they show "The Big Match" presented by Brian Moore. Its showing old games from the seventies. You should see the state of the pitches. The ball just sticks to the mud. Far worse than a park pitch. But they just got on with it. Jumpers for goalposts anybody?

The weather forecast forward for Northampton looks relatively dry up to that date so perhaps the water table issues with the area will have declined and the game will go ahead.

Well, all the stats are there in the first post. Since writing that Wigan have lost at Swindon and at home to Wimbledon, both by the odd goal. 1 win in nine for the Latics, we have moved on with a loss at Blackpool and a draw at Accrington which means we have won one game in ten.

Looking at the weather, with snow forecast and sub zero temperatures pretty much from now until kickoff time I do wonder if this will fall victim to the conditions once more.....Marc Edwards will again have to make the decision.....7pm kickoff if it does go ahead.

Using random lengths of games we've lost one game in the last three. We have also won four games in the last sixteen and lost three games in the last six.

My point is that you can use different numbers of games to emphasise the difference in a run of form. You chose 10 games because in the preceding three games the Cobblers won two and drew one. You were specifically using 10 games to exaggerate the poor run in form.

2 games this week against teams with worse defensive records than us so perhaps we can stop our scoring drought. From the same number of games Wigan have conceded 7 more goals and they have scored 6 more goals. They have conceded 25 goals in the last 10 games with 3 or more in 6 of those games, also scoring 15.
In their 12 away games Wigan have failed to score 6 times but have scored 12 goals in the other 6, they have only 1 away clean sheet while conceding 20 times. Jones, their keeper seems to be getting a lot of stick as he is being held responsible for a number of goals from his errors, watch him have a blinder now on Tuesday.
We appear to have tightened up defensively with 3 clean sheets from the last 5 games. As I have mentioned before we are unbeaten in our Tuesday evening league games and 3 points would almost certainly take us out of the bottom 4.

To be fair Larry I don’t feel that any of the alternative stats you gave painted a significantly different picture? Put it this way, none of them made me feel we were doing well, particularly winning 4 of the last 16? Still, I get the feeling these figures are about to improve, 2-0 for this one (6-0 if Curle adopts my inspired use of Watson upfront)

I have noticed GPC that as a local Moderator albeit of the Games Room you maybe suffering from symptom of 'loneliness of absolute power' or pothos - means desire, longing for, regret, want. However since your elevation to this mighty office I have noticed recently that you have become quite rational or even mellow when dealing with troublesome posters. Like many on here I appreciate the work you do on statistics surrounding NTFC especially the financial details of the Cardosa Scandal; including the game intro. Don't assume the mantle of 'snowflake' as the hat won't fit 8) . Ignore the troublesome, irritating 3/4 who pester you but offer them tea and sympathy. I appreciate that on KC and his tactics we don't always see eye to eye but as you say it is only opinions. Keep your head up and carry on regardless👍

Thanks for the kind words fellow posters, even Evers to a degree!!

I've been a mod on the Games Room section for at least 10 years, probably more, so no recent "elevation" there......

As for the rest of your post...I don't drink tea, and yes i'm trying to ignore some posters, sadly sometimes I fail in that respect!  ;)

Back to the point ....
We’ve really got to win this one! Let’s keep the back 5 as is and make sure McWilliams isn’t bench warming (sorry, monitoring the pace of the game?!) for the first 65 mins.
I have to say I’m also warming to Melly’s idea of Watson up front?? Just not sure it’s wise to gamble on it on such a vital game?

I was going to repeat the poor joke about KC adopting the “stalking lion” tactic and keeping our best 5 players on the bench for 75 minutes to study the opposition’s weaknesses? But then I realised after McWilliams I had no idea who to name as the other 4, so the punchline lost a bit of momentum? Still I think we are due a performance and am looking forward to this game immensely. Good old Keith will pull a rabbit out of the hat on this one like he did to get us into the play offs and we are going to give these a right tonking, I can feel it in me water?

So what would your prediction have been if you hadn't had a very, very, very bad feeling about this game? At least 15-1 I would imagine. Still, nice to see a postive prediction from you. I hope you've printed it and stuck it on your wall to show any disbelievers.

I hope KC will be more positive (can somebody explain that word to him!) with his team selection because we should try and score 2 or 3 goals, in both of the next 2 matches.

           Mitchell

Kioso Jones Bolger Mills

McWilliams Sowerby Morris

                 Watson

             Edmondson Rose

Yes KC, no Hoskins because of his lack of  a quality final ball.

Here we go again! Hoskins has the most assists this season in the league for the Cobblers with 4, thats a couple more than even Michael Jacobs! Next in the list is Marshall with 2, Adams 1, Rose 1 and Warburton 1. Out of that list 2 have left, one rarely starts and the other one is out favour and his pants fall down. We're absolutely full of other quality options! Final ball  ;D

I acknowledge Sam is a 'Marmite' player but in my OPINION he is my 5th choice midfielder. I also acknowledge that the last 5 'professional' managers have all selected him but it does not change my OPINION that I prefer a more pocession style of football and he misplaces too many passes.
If we needed somebody to runaround a lot we should have signed Mo Farah!

This is what I’ve been saying all season, he’s ok as an impact sub, but starting his lack of passing ability stands out like a sore thumb.

I really think we can win tonight, however, Saturday is a very different proposition, JFH will be desperate to put one over us and will let his team know such, they have signed some decent players as well, that’s why I have a bad feeling.

Indeed.
I wonder how many minutes on average those 4 assists have come at compared to Marshall's.
Maybe if Keith placed his trust in someone other than Sammy we might have created more chances and scored a few more goals?

CJ agree entirely, if you play every minute of every game and take the penalties you are likely to be near the top of the shots and assists charts. It’s the number of misplaced passes and wayward shots that I find frustrating. I don’t doubt his effort and commitment bu5 I just don’t think he’s very good. I counted something like 30 misplaced passes and losses of the ball in possession in one game earlier in the season.

Joe Dodoo, a free agent formerly of Rangers is named on the bench for Wigan, having not played since last March for Bolton.

Looks like the plan is to sit back, let them play and eventually leak goals. I hope I am wrong.

Mills is being turned inside out each time their winger gets the ball.

Utter garbage. No shots on target. Epitomised by Rose hoofing the ball out of defense when not a single Cobbler up field. Can't remember a passage of play where we managed three consecutive passes. Unless tactics changed at half-time I can see Wigan winning this, and if they do, KC has to go.

We're shìte.

McWilliams is a man who can run around like a rabbit, win a crunching tackle, and intercept a tonne of balls. He's not going to play the killer ball or take a shot from the edge of the box. Swap him for someone more agressive could tactically make sense, if it wasn't far more obvious to take Hoskins off and keep him back to continue to do that role.

That said, I'm not sure anyone in this Cobblers team can pass, so seems pointless to replace him.

It's also pointless if the midfield is never going to see the ball anyway.

The formula is simple ...
Sheehan & McWilliams = 3 pts
Perm 1 from 2 = 1 pt
Both out = 0 pts
Go on ... prove me wrong!

Holds up again!
On for a boring point at half time, take off McWilliams and go on to lose

There is no hope left at all with this set up.

I dunno about losing league status, there's always one financial basket-case in League two and only two relegation spots, so you're always scrapping over one singular exit point. We will certainly go down this year though.

Who do you want? Brady? Sammo? Austin (not sure why his name is there, but it's coming up in twitter for some reason)? External appointment like Cowleys, Wilkin? Someone who wants to play football, someone who is going to hoof it to try and stay in the division? What's everyone's main priorities.

Last time we sacked a useless hoofball merchant as we exited League 1, we ended up with Austin? Would being relegated, but having a go and playing some football be enough at this point in time?

Heard the interview, an honest appraisal of the obvious? Unfortunately the biggest responsibility for Mr Curle is to carry out an honest appraisal of himself? As I was saying last night he has been dealt a few terrible cards. Coaches emphasise the importance of the spine of the team. Our successful side of last season lost Goode, Wharton, Turnbull, McCormack, Oliver and Morton. Given McCormacks fitness had probably gone arguably the only one that was avoidable was Turnbull? Couple that with a significantly reduced budget as a result of Covid and an expectation that we were to mount a challenge in this division is an unrealistic expectation you can have? This season was always going to be a relegation fight in those circumstances and if you couple that with some significant injuries Keith Curles job was an immense challenge? However, tactically we have been found wanting far too often? Team selections, the way we are set up and the tactical changes made and substitutions have been repeatedly flawed. This has meant far too many performances that are under par even given the aforementioned circumstances? The constant tinkering and refusal to consistently adopt a change in formation simply results in 1 step forward 2 steps back. As I said Keith has been dealt some terrible cards. Just don’t compound that by playing a worse hand than you actually have, or worse fail to recognise what that is in the first place. Unfortunately Mr Curle has convinced me that he is struggling to have an honest evaluation of his own shortcomings and is consistently failing to have an alternative solution if things don’t go according to plan? Despite the misfortune that’s not good enough?

The Cowleys would be great, but I'd imagine they are holding out for a more attractive proposition / higher pay bracket than us given their stock is still high.

I wouldn't be at all averse to seeking out a well respected coach (not manager) who hasn't been on the managerial merry-go-round for however many years and could bring exiting football. Look at Steve Cooper at Swansea, Neil Critchley at Blackpool or Chris Beech at Carlisle for good examples.

That said, I would go all out trying to prise Michael Flynn away from Newport County. An excellent young manager with 3 or 4 years in the job now at Newport and he's done a brilliant job. They're looking like they could go up this year but could we offer him more money? He'd be the one I'd go for.

Seems that commentators did think that yes....it was mentioned in the Chronicle report and also the BBC report on the game.

BBC: "Goalless at the break, the second half was a desperately poor affair and a draw seemed inevitable with both teams struggling to create anything."

Chron: "Curle made his feelings known at half-time by making a double substitution as Ryan Watson and Bryn Morris replaced Jack Sowerby and Shaun McWilliams. But that did not lead to an improvement in the second period when, if anything, the standard slipped yet further as both teams struggled badly"

Not sure of the reasons behind removing McWilliams, assume tactical? Given the criticism regarding recently leaving him out, the reaction KC received as a result and the apparent refusal to acknowledge mistakes by changing approach, my default assumption is simply that he wanted to prove everyone wrong? I.E was it made in the hope that as we were playing poorly, if McWilliams was withdrawn and we went on to win the game his decision to leave him out previously was fully vindicated? That is perhaps unfair, but the fact that is what I now suspect is an indication of how my opinion of Keith Curle is in currently in free fall. Either way Im in agreement, a decision was made to remove our most consistent player that resulted in us performing even worse and we went on to lose the game as a result? Keith Curle maybe justified in criticising the players but if he thinks that process doesn’t include looking in the mirror I feel it’s probably only a matter of 1 or 2 games before his time is up irrespective of supporters opinion?

Right, having slept on what happened last night, here's my thoughts. Naming an unchanged team, after a reasonable performance, is a good start, but what was obvious to everyone after 10 minutes was that our 2 in midfield were being over run by Wigan's 4. This was even picked up by Tim O and the Kettering Youth team manager so Curle waits until half of a vital match has gone before he acts. When Tim O says "Morris is coming on" most of us thought great we are going to match up the midfield numbers, but no, he just does a like for like swap sticking with the reason we can't get in the game.
This was followed by a series of substitutions which includes Korboa replacing Hoskins in attack and Hoskins moving to replacing Mills at left wingback ? So does KC think that Hoskins is a better wingback than Mills? With every sub we lost more of our shape, I noticed when Chuck came on he had a confused look whilst trying to explain positions to other players.
I don't really buy the "These players aren't good enough" line, they have proved in a few matches that if they play in a system that suits them, they can play, but to play hoofball without a target man, its not going to work is it? Added to the fact that our set pieces are SO predictable and, most of the time, poorly delivered, it's not surprising that we struggle for goals. I find it hard to believe that we don't have at least a couple of players that can take a decent corner, lots of local footballers can take great corners and free kicks, and they don't have half the ability of our players.
It's time for Kelvin to make a decision, I don't think there is any doubt that we are going down, so does he stick with KC ? If he does, the ST sales will drop drastically, or does he pull the trigger and give someone else a chance? I see lots of people saying "Who can we get who's any better?" my answer is, I think it would be difficult to do any worse, dire football, no goals and losing !

The pitch isnt helping but they all looked clueless, and that's not a slight on the players, its on the manager. The only time they passed it was to someone in a better position to hoof it forward. You can see when they get the ball they dont know what to do with it. Some players are static, some are running but the pass is going to where they were. Utter shambles.
New man with new (any) ideas is needed.

Good battling performance at Accy followed by this tripe. Even during the worst times in the past (and there's plenty to choose from)there would be goalmouth action, but when this team plays badly we don't even get that. Barely a shot all match. I could see the sense in taking Sowerby off at half time - not doing much, already booked and prime candidate for a second yellow - But Mc Williams? He was the only one showing any spark of intent, and while not setting the pitch alight was really getting stuck in and chasing everything. Can't see where the next goal is coming from - and until we start delivery decent quality balls to the strikers there won't be many. Crosses either go out or don't even beat the first defender. Grim times - last night was a must win, and we bottled it.

Are you suggesting that whoever is the Manager we are now doomed - Or only if KC remains in charge ? The latter makes more sense given the bizarre subs last night. ‘

We still have 20 games to play, to early to suggest we are irretrievably doomed if that is what you mean?

Decent report Bertie given the manner of defeat and the OTT abusive comments which followed. It was grim watching indeed.
On the question of the subs I thought that Sowerby and McW were very poor tonight but to withdraw both was bizarre. Just take off Sowerby who was on a yellow! Looking fwd to Burton on Saturday who we always score plenty of goals ;D

Having supported the Club since School have no intention of abandoning them now or more to the point just giving up! To me you only surface after a poor defeat always with the same mantra - sack him! I have witnessed far worse performances like that against the likes of Southampton,Rotherham, Hartlepool, Boston and Millwall. Sowerby and McWilliams were both subbed at half time as both had picked up minor injuries is the explanation. But having put in a decent display at Accrington, without the usual cutting edge, we had a chance with a win to be top of the bottom group of 7. What we got was the worse performance of the season. In the first half the tactic appeared to be for the defense to lump it forward and say to the forwards " go and chase that".
Our delivery from corners and freekicks was again woeful, straight to their 'keeper, not clearing the first defender or overhit and clearing everybody.
Just before the goal I was thinking that apart from switching off in the second minute the defense had coped pretty well and then comes Bolger's error. We created nothing through midfield, why do we not slip through balls through the opposing defense for our forwards to latch onto?.
Cannot blame Edmonson or Rose for failing to get on the score sheet when no chances are being created for them, thought Edmonson held the ball up well at times.
It is difficult to see where the next goal is coming from having failed to score in 9 of the 13 home games and 15 of the 26 games in total. I wonder what the record is for these stats as the way we are going we could be setting new ones.

In my opinion you are an example of a fair weather (probably mostly  armchair) supporter! Begone with you.

Typical! Being critical of honest supporters instead of the cause of their ire.

If we lose at home to a club in crisis with a care taker manager after setting up for a point and their keeper not making a single save.

Which games do you think we can realistically win ?

I am sorry General but I just can’t throw in the towel. We have 20 games to go so we have a chance? Am also sorry to disagree with most on here but there is still hope with or without Curle. We are Northampton and can still shock some teams in L1 again with or without Curle. We

Fairplay to you,

I Didn't turn on Edinburgh or Page. I even cheered Austin's honest appraisal following Mansfield but I can't watch anymore of this football.

I have just brought a house and have sat down for the last few games feeling guilty that I have more important things to do and I simply haven't been entertained.

I cannot remember watching a game as important as last nights and being so bored.

I'd like to tell you something Mr Moral Fcuking High Ground. Before I do so, and for the sake of clarity, I will tell you that Horsham Cobbler and 1HorshamCobbler are 2 different people who happen, believe it or not, to both reside in Horsham, West Sussex.

Now let me ask you: would you drive on a tuesday night (after a full day working in the office) 230 miles round-trip to watch a home game at Sixfields, getting home after midnight? Would you drive on a saturday from West Sussex to Fleetwood, via Swindon in order to give a fellow Cobblers fan a lift (a 604-mile round trip, not that that would resonate in any way with with you)? I say 'drive' as opposed to sitting on a supporters' coach munching on corned beef sandwiches, having the odd nap along the way, and only having to worry about the next comfort stop. Because that's the sort of commitment 1HorshamCobbler gives to following the town, and has given over the 30 years since I first met him at the Littlehampton FAC tie in November 1990.

So, before you continue pontificating and slinging around more insulting comments along the lines of "In my opinion you are an example of a fair weather (probably mostly armchair) supporter" you might be interested to hear that his armchair is a MAGIC one, yes, one that travels as far and as wide and as frequently as a hardcore supporter such as your good self. We would invite invite you down to Sussex-by-the-Sea to break bread with us but I fear that the journey might be too much for you.

Well I met you at the Yeovil game where I bought a ticket from you. There is no need to use abusive/foul mouthed language and you should retract that part of your message. Not sure why you wish to go to such trouble to explain the tenuous link between yourself and Horsham1? Have no issue with you whatsoever and quite happy to journey to Horsham where I have friends.... pandemic permitting.

Well said HC but do you think this will actually quieten our sanctimonious friend?

Yes - as Horsham1 does indeed  travel to long away games. So that bit was unfair by me; sorry Horsham1 for losing my rag.

And I, in turn, apologise if my comments overstepped the mark and offended you.

On this forum we all often disagree, sometimes strongly, with each other's points of view and opinions but we should never call into question the commitment or credentials of all of us when it comes to supporting NTFC. In that respect I will stand up for my friend Mark just as, commendably, people on here on will vouch for you as being a decent person.

I may not agree with some of the things you say, or views you hold, but I do not doubt that you are a dyed-in-the-wool Cobbler.

We move on !
Most Cobblers Fans are decent people particularly on the Trust Coaches and there is nothing better than being in a Cobblers crowd in full swing - like they did at Burton the other season. Now that our nemesis has departed no doubt the Forum will settle down with a calmer attitude prevailing. ....for a while. Come in Joey Barton ;D
