Title: Sunderland Away on Sunday 10.05.21
Post by: GrangeParkCobbler on May 07, 2021, 23:53:10 pm
So, the end of the season is here and The Cobblers fate is already sealed....we will be playing League 2 football again next season. As for our illustrious hosts, they are assured of a playoff place, and can finish 3rd, 4th or 5th dependant on results.
Sunderland currently sit in 4th place in the league, a recent shaky run of seven games without a win ultimately put the boot into their automatic promotion chances, but they stopped the rot last time out with a 3-1 win at Plymouth.
Their home form has been decidedly average, only 11th best in the league, with nine wins and six defeats. Overall though they have the fewest defeats of any team in the league (9), but that is balanced out by the most draws in the league (16). Portsmouth, MK Dons, Wigan, Charlton, Plymouth and Blackpool have all left The Stadium of Light with the three points.

Lee Johnson is in charge, son of our former manager Gary Johnson. Lee joined the Mackems back in December and has only suffered seven defeats in his 36 games so far. Johnson junior has had a winning managerial record at every club he's managed so far (Oldham, Barnsley and Bristol City before Sunderland)

Charlie Wyke leads their goalscoring charts by a country mile....the striker has netted 30 goals this season, 25 of them in the league. Grant Leadbitter follows on next with seven goals in the League, Chris McGuire has five in the league and three in the cups. Both Wyke and Aiden McGeady missed the last game with injury concerns, neither were anything serious though and both are available for selection on Sunday, however manager Johnson has already said he may rotate the squad with the upcoming playoffs in mind.

There have only been 11 previous meetings between Sunderland and The Cobblers,  5 wins for them and three for us. This will be our first ever League trip to The Stadium of Light, we have played there once previously though, when we managed to throw away a two goal lead with just four minutes remaining in a Carling Cup tie back in 2008.....I remember it well! We went on to lose the penalty shootout that night. Cobblers scorers were Colin Larkin and Luke Guttridge. Our last League meeting on Wearside was an end of season defeat back in 1988, another game I went to. Eric Gates throwing himself to the floor to win a penalty, future Cobbler Marco Gabbiadini pulling the strings for them, but a superb Tony Adcock goal for the Cobblers drew warm applause from all sides of the ground. We watched as our playoff hopes went up in smoke whilst they won the title. We have won just the once up there, back in 1963 as we were on our run up the Leagues, a 2-0 win early in the 1963/64 season was followed up by us winning the return at the County Ground 5-1.

Bringing us right up to date was a fairly entertaining 0-0 draw earlier this season, the first League draw between the two teams.

Samuel Barrott from West Riding is the appointed referee for this game, he's a first year EFL ref but he's making his second trip to Sunderland following on from handling their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury in January, he also reffed their 2-1 Trophy win at Oldham in December. He has handled one Cobblers game this season too, our 4-3 reverse at Stadium:MK, one of a handful of games where he did not have to produce a card. 83 yellows and 4 reds in 31 games is his total to date.

Well, I hope you've enjoyed these previews.....i'll be back with more next season....subject to demand!  ;D

I remember that as well. A  couple of minutes left, thinking game over, our driver sparked the coach up, and moved it. Doing so he activated his tacho. It of course went to extra time, tacho still running. We got as far as Watford Gap before he had to pull over and take his break. Long day that was.

I remember being there for the Eric Gates ‘non’ penalty and shouts of “Where’s you famous Roker roar”, which was ultimately leading to the end of the Carr golden era. Wow, over 30 years ago!

Probably another game of Northampton nil, we might have a chance of a goal if Jim Motgomery was still in goal for them.
On a brighter note although we have had a poor season at least we have escaped Charles Breakspeare.
My most memorable Sunderland game was in December 1963, our first season in the old Division 2 and the season before our promotion to Division 1. This season Sunderland were promoted and we beat them 5-1 on a frosty pitch, after the pre match warm up we changed into baseball boots and they could not get anywhere near us with their studs.

Portsmouth vs Accrington is the only game being televised as far as I know.

Charlie Woods in goal here? Arnold is injured and Mitchell has been a disappointing loanee, so might as well give the kid a game.

The new era begins...

Don't play any of the loans...

Give our own players the fantastic experience of playing in such a stadium, as they won't be playing in anything like it in L2  ;D

I reckon Brady needs to show his intentions and go with a squad that suggests who he may want to keep and potentially be bringing on (youth) for next season. Forget about the loans who have been generally underwhelming and will be gone without another thought for us next season, although I wouldn’t be averse to signing Miller, who if/when completely fit, could be an asset. Tomorrow’s a free hit and who knows, we might be surprised. Chuck has to start.

Are you suggesting Jim Montgomery wasn’t very good, he was certainly impressive in the ‘73 cup final and played for them over 600 times, or that we’d have more chance against a 77 year old? :)

Shoemender - Jim Montgomery certainly was a decent 'keeper, my comment that we might score with him in goal was due to his current age and not past capabilities.

Cobblers front 3
Rose:   0 goals in last 23 appearances
Marshall:   0 goals in last 27 appearances
Miller:   0 goals in 11 appearances for the club

So law of averages suggests they are are due a hatful so I’m going for a 3-2 win!

I'm actually feeling a bit more glass-half-full about the Cobblers after today, which is refreshing. If they show the same fight and character they did today, I honestly think that team is one creative midfielder and one competent striker away from being a team that comes straight back up. We got our tails up as the game went on and we realised Sunderland were nothing to fear - and you'd hope we'll have the same attitude towards opponents in L2.

Unfortunately a quality playmaking midfielder and prolific striker are usually either the ones that cost the £ or are in massive demand.

Don't worry, there will be lots of 1 goal in every 20 games 'strikers' out there, and i'm sure KT will splash the cash to get one,

Rose:   0 goals in last 23 appearances
Marshall:   0 goals in last 27 appearances
Miller:   0 goals in 11 appearances for the club

You can add an extra appearance to all 3 after today, absolutely woeful.

That is a beyond shocking stat.

How’s it even possible for our front line not to have scored a goal between them in 61 appearances!

We appear to have unearthed a goal scoring full back to replace Kioso next season. I know he has his critics on here ( which Brady again said today he didn't understand) but Sam can always be relied upon to put a shift in wherever he is asked to play. Somebody on here was blaming Sam's penalty miss at Wimbledon as a reason for our relegation which is rather unfair as it is the only time he has ever missed from the spot. Rico missed penalties more regularly and I recall Matty Taylor, Chris Lines and Ryan Watson also missing penalties. There are plenty of other reasons for our relegation.

211 actually, but its the company he keeps that counts...also Grayson never played RB or LB.

If he keeps up his recent record overall, he'll overtake Phillips, Barnes Adcock and Morley next season...

I like Hoskins but wouldn't expect his name to be mentioned with Trevor Morley.
Richard Hill must be one of the most prolific with one in two games as essentially a midfielder. If he'd done that in the modern game and kept fit and progressed he would have been worth an absolute fortune.

Yes, but we'd have forgotten to add any sell-on clauses to the contract when we sold him off to the first bidder. ;D

If memory serves me correct, we sold him to Watford for around £250,000. I wonder what that equates to these days?

He’s not fit to lace their boots, although he will be useful in L2 because he can play basically in every position on the pitch and runs around a lot.
FWIW I thought he had a good game against Sunderland, still has zero quality though 😂

Indeed.

The balance of that side was perfect.

A strong foundation at the back, with Gilbert and McGoldrick supplying the chances, Hill the marauding midfielder, Morley supplying the class, and Benjamin and Donald knitting everything together.

If only we had half of that side now.  :(

7 managers have selected Sam in their starting 11's, most of them regularly so I would take their views on his abilities over posters on here. If he was released he would not be short of offers from other division 1 & 2 clubs. Yes he has faults and his end product is not always up to standard but that is why he is playing at this level. The quality of crosses, corners and free kicks from plenty of other players have been no better including the previous assist king Nicky Adams.

Yes, but like our current squad, the keeper was s***e to mediocre. Gleasure is protected in Cobblers lore, due to not having much to do in the class of 87 and nostalgic claret tinted specs.
He was pony prior to and following the great season!
In fact, didn't really show what he was made of until landing the role as Willy Wonka in the movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... original - not the Jonny Depp farce!

We turned down (250k?) from Charlton for Gleasure. 87/88 season he was outstanding. After that, he rapidly went down hill and became a liability, I remember well when he went through a spell of being lobbed!!  ;D

Especially by (I think) Phil Chard for a spectacular own goal at Sincil Bank!

Irrespective of form before or after, in my eyes, any Cobblers keeper who is part of a promotion winning team takes on legendary status.  :)

The thing I remember the most about Gleasure was the way he used to slap both his thighs with his gloved hands after almost every goal he conceded.

Much like O'Donnell in recent seasons, who used to go into meltdown at the nearest body after every goal, even when it was his own error!  ;D

Are you kidding? Thinking back to the Carr or Wilder era, along with moments like the Wembley/Anfield wins, or P*sh away will help maintain the sanity of the average Cobblers fan. In fact it is much more preferable than discussing what we’ve just witnessed.

Been on the sauce?

We murdered the 4th division, playing with their hands in their pockets half the time. If that team were kept fully together, Morley, Hill Benji, McPherson, McGoldrick, Donald and diddy Dave Gilbert, they would've done the same in division 3.

We didn't start the Div3 season too badly either if I remember, through blurred eyes at Chester!

I love reminiscing about that season and if that team had been kept together we would have at least made the play-offs in Division 3, probably automatic. But typical of us we never build on our successes. Hill was the first to go and then one by one the side broke up, albeit some good replacements came in - Tony Adcock, Paul Culpin to name two of my favourites but sadly that team could never be re-created. 5-0 away to Chester on the opening day of the Div 3 season gave us the hope that it would continue in that vein but just fell short in the end. And Peter Gleasure was named player of the season in 87/88 if I recall correctly.

Your arrogance is quite something isn't it? I saw your comment about Hoskins having a decent game. That doesn't change the fact that you criticise him regularly. Perhaps you're the one with the comprehension problem, making posts without understanding what you are writing. Or perhaps, you think your lazy (and vaguely racist) jibes about tapas help to support your poor defence of an argument.
