Title: Sweet Caroline
Post by: andycobbler on July 18, 2021, 23:30:46 pm
Unlike other clubs we don't have a signature song when we score. Due to the current euphoria in sporting events across the country and sweet Caroline becoming our nation's favourite I thoughts sweet Caroline could easily be our signature song. Changing Caroline for Northampton town is easy on the ear. What do you think. Please discuss.

I always thought "My Perfect Cousin" by The Undertones would be good. We would have to substitute "Kevin" with "Kelvin" obviously. For that extra touch of pertinence we could change “cousin” to “chairman”.

Sweet Caroline will do for me. I have loved that song since Neil Diamond recorded it back in 1969. Most of the songs mentioned on here by various folk, I have never heard of - sign of age I suppose.

One of the songs played at my dads funeral 4 years ago. A favourite of his and my mums. Still wouldn't want it as our signature goal scoring song though. Smacks to much of plagiarism.

Great song but a there must be a song by an artist associated with the town we can use and some of the lyrical genius' can reword it if needed?

That's why we should go for something completely different 8). Don't know if anyone else uses it but what about something like White Riot by The Clash, that would get 'em going
or something a bit more obscure like Orgone Accumulator by Hawkwind or Afro Left by Leftfield. Something original.

It's really not hard, they used to have 'These Boots' , then they got rid of it...but the whole point is that you push through and eventually people recognise it as your song and it then becomes a tradition over the years...

People obviously hate the goal music at Fleetwood, and despite what I said about goal music, they have always had it and it becomes instantly recognisable as their song, and has relevence to the town. In some way I admire the owners for it.

Z cars Everton (and watford)
YNWA Liverpool

two clubs that understand tradition.

"I was born under the Hotel End."
"Knocked kneed chicken."
"Noel Noel."
Not sure if anyone else did their own versions in the olden days. Daresay Hotel End could easily have been replaced with someone elses end, Stretford End maybe.

I was born under da CHELSEA SHED
Knives are made for stabbing,
Guns are made to shoot,
If you come down da CHELSEA SHED,
We'll all stick in da boot,

or

I was born in the Stretford End,
I was born in the Stretford End,
Boots are made for bootin',
Scarves are made to wave,
If you see a City fan,
You put him in his grave.

or Charlton/Leeds
I was saying goodbye to my horse,
And as I was saying goodbye to my horse,
I was saying goodbye to my horse,
Goodbye Horse...

I'd be surprised if we actually have many/any originals.
It's hard to get something brand new going, especially at our level!

What about knocked kneed chicken and Noel Noel?

Bow/knock legged chicken/knock kneed hen did the rounds, Everton, Brighton, Leeds etc.
United used Noel for Noel Cantwell, so assuming it was a variation on that. It's been around as long as Christmas  :P

Fields of green is probably ours, or at least most associated with us.

Keep it local and amend the words on Bauhaus's  Ziggy Stardust.

Bauhaus would be a good shout. Not Ziggy Stardust though, wasn't that originally by someone else? Can't remember who though.
What about "In the Flat Field" which, I think, actually had some sort of Northampton connotations.
Not many other singers/bands with Northampton/County connections that I'd really want serenading our goal celebrations;
Des O Connor, Freddy Fingers Lee, Coast to Coast :P

If we're going with a song by someone local, I can't believe everyone is overlooking the fact that Faye Tozer came from Northampton. I'm sure there are plenty of ditties in the Steps back catalogue we could use although, to be fair, the most obvious and appropriate one was actually a cover of a Bee Gees' song...

It has to be anthemic so everyone who wants to joins in.
Boots was and is the obvious choice to me. The younger contingent could quickly turn it into quite an intimidating song if a bit of passion was employed as a walk on recital.
The Sixfields Boys tune and the line 'going all the way to the top' (from memory, I still have my copy somewhere) would be good if a goal celebration tune was insisted upon.

It became the case that everyone eventually ended up singing 'horse.' It's actually an old navy shanty that refers to men going to sea, and saying goodbye to their whores. ;)

My thinking too* - some of the suggestions on Bauhaus who to me play tuneless mutterings with iron age hard rock beating out is eminently unsuitable. The taylor made for us is ' These Boots etc' and could work if chorused in an intimidating/passion manner.  The tune I remember from the more successful periods of Cobblers fortunes is ' were going up again, up up' and was often belted out unashamedly gleeful!

* No way does this suggest or insinuate the same repetitive identical thinking - far from it 8)

Its sung at most away games by a relatively small group of 'singers' (loose term that) - always thought Uncle Dan and Coolie were involved. Didn't bother me and others at all

Couldn't disagree more, Evers. But if not Bauhaus, then surely it has to be something from Love and Rockets. Ball of Confusion would be most appropriate  ;D but I suspect Evers would prefer one of these. ;)

Sweet Caroline has been sung at T20 cricket matches for some years now, along with Hi ho silver lining and Hey Jude amongst others. I think it adds greatly to the atmosphere. They say they won't play it at the Hundred though as they say it encourages a 'boozy crowd' and they want to attract a family audience. Surely that's why people go to limited overs cricket matches to see 4's and 6's , have a pint and singalong to songs they know?  They have lined up a number of live acts to sing during the break and frankly I have never heard of any of them - mind you I am 74 and have no interest in today's music. I have watched the first two matches in the Hundred and they are as dull as ditchwater without the music.

Sorry if I have gone 'off topic'.

Yes, and generic super-teams who apart from daddy and ten year old boy, fans of Worcs, Northants, Derbys and Leics cannot identify with!

I was smuggly happy to see virtually no more at Headingley than when I was up there a few weeks back with the Steelbacks.

As a couple of Blackburn supporting Lancs fans at the T20 Finals (when Northants beat Surrey) laughed at the irony of everyone clapping away to the LA's There She Goes...quite explicitly a song about shooting Heroin!
Banging toon though!  ;D

What about Song 2 by Blur. Now that's a rousing song and I believe it's about someone having their head shaved. That's good enough for me.
It was actually written to prove that people will pay for any rubbish even if it doesn't make sense. Perfect song choice for us then  ;D

For me the first minute or so of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Two Tribes has to be the most perfect run out tune ever.

Have the team emerge on 30 seconds...

Terrible rhythm - Your joking of course!

I expect that shite Liquidator will be played again but if the club need last minute suggestions...

Surely what we need is a recognisable top ten hit from a famous singer with a local connection?

Enter stage left...

Gene Pitney "Twenty Four Hours From Towcester"
