61  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Ten League Games Mark. on: February 06, 2024, 13:19:11 pm
Who's comparing? As always I just give you the facts.

By the way, Wilson took over a losing side and didn't have the benefit of a summer to build his own team.

In fact, as you would expect the majority of managers took over after the previous manager failed. That's the nature of the process. Only those that followed Calderwood & Wilder can be considered exceptions.

You've presented a set of comparative data in a league table ranking the managers first ten game record against each other.  Nobody had a problem with that but it is a comparison.

All Manny pointed out and I agreed with is this specific set of data is difficult to draw anything directly from because it can't reflect the many external variables that will have contributed to it.

Take one example.  Phil Chard and Martin Wilkinson.  Similarly bad records according to the data alone.  We know outside of the data one managed at a time we had the largest playing budget probably in our history and the other managed during administration and had to play half the youth team.

I like your stats posts as they bring up interesting talking points.  I personally just struggle to draw much from this set of data for the reasons I said.  No biggy.
62  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Ten League Games Mark. on: February 05, 2024, 18:59:29 pm
It’s never that black and white though is it Marvo.
It’s a bit like AI the more points of data you give it the better it is, example Brady took over a loosing side put together by Curle in L1 whereas some of the others in your list were in lower divisions and had a summer to plan etc.

Completely agree.  Too many variables to make this a worthwhile comparison in my opinion.
63  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: End of season predictions. on: February 05, 2024, 18:57:46 pm
As we had done a finishing league position at the start of the season my objective when starting this thread was to speculate on our final points total. Sorry if I did make that clear.

I went with position personally as IMO it's a bit more meaningful than points.
64  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 05, 2024, 18:56:37 pm
I bet he’s had a bollöcking today from KT, in no uncertain terms.

 Grin

I don't think so.  A polite reminder of the nice new contract he has just been given would probably suffice.

I think KT is intelligent enough to understand the frustration being felt.
65  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: February 05, 2024, 18:50:33 pm
He’s told you why it misleads fans, KT says he doesn’t take a salary which is true but he does take expenses instead, but didn’t mention the expenses. FFS I don’t expect too much from you but surely you can see what Dustin is getting at?
Are you still wearing those bad shoes?

Least suprising reply of the day.  I can completely see the point he was making...very badly.  I question the logic of mimicking the very behaviour he criticises so much.  Don't forget this is your "one true voice of the fans".  Grin

"I know what will show KT up for the liar he is.  I'll lie to everyone myself!  That will show him."   Grin

Take a breath and think about who you are defending here.  You only have the truth now cause I called him out on his bullsh1t.

So let me get this straight.  Random has chosen to knowingly mislead fans (and has been doing so for years).  But when I call him out and he admits it I'm the bad guy?

As for shoes comment, I have no idea what that means.
66  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: End of season predictions. on: February 05, 2024, 15:55:36 pm
For me it depends completely on if the injury situation improves.

If it does I reckon 10th if it doesn't 18th.
67  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 05, 2024, 15:51:24 pm
I hope JB has made amends with the squad today

IMO JB's biggest strength are the bonds he forms with the players and within the squad.  He's a great man manager and a minor misstep is very easy to resolve for someone of that calibre.
68  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: February 05, 2024, 15:35:20 pm
OK, I know for a fact that KT is paid (or was, my info is a few years old now but assume still relevant) "expenses"  They are not a small amount but at the same time not unreasonable as a salary

As usual in your haste to jump down my throat, you miss the point.

The point is that its ANOTHER example of how KT uses clever wording to give you a certain impression.

Now most fans reading the quote would think, oh how wonderful our owners are as they take nothing out of the club (I won't mentioned the chinese money as that is there money 'earned' off the back of the club), KT even bringing up he doesn't take a salary

BUT instead of a salary he is paid "monthly expenses" (so no tax, NI etc)

Again it is not the money (in this case) just the spin and false impression it gives that annoys me.

No we don't charge interest but do they charge fees?

Everything that KT says is done so for a reason, always timed to almost perfection.

So let me get this straight.  You hate the spin KT puts on what he says at times, despite it being truthful, feeling it misleads fans.

Now you could at this point state why it's misleading and tell everyone the truth.  Wouldn't that make a nice change.

But your genius solution instead is to spin your own comments to mislead fans in the opposing direction.

All the while on a topic that by your admission you don't even really have much of a problem with!   Grin Grin

You only tell the truth when people like myself call you out on it.

How's that approach been working out for you over the years?

Do you think that approach has enhanced your integrity among fellow supporters?

Then finally you can't resist it and pose another question regarding no interest on their loans but potentially fees.  So again, answer your own question.  Do they charge fees?  If so how much and is that inappropriate in any way?  What evidence do you have to support this?

69  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 05, 2024, 14:09:01 pm
Of course it does  Grin
Goode money plus Chelsea money = no cash bids in the region of 200k which is what Exeter have been doing, the same Exeter our own club chairman/spokesman Kelvin thomas quoted earlier this season as a club we are about the same budget as.

That is comparing apples with apples
One club puts in large bids for players and one club doesn’t put in large bids for players.

You can polish turds as much as you like but the above is fact and not conjecture.

Therefore one would assume Jon Brady is at the end of his tether signing a load of cheap signings and loans  (in fact he was due to have to sign yet another loan making six when you can only play five rather than being able to BUY a couple of players he had targeted)

It would be easy for him to see very little future of progression at the cobblers given this strategy and he is clearly venting his frustration.

Now I’d imagine (and at this point it is my own opinion rather than fact) that Jon realised that next season will need a big rebuilding job in arguably a more competitive division with big spenders likely coming up and down and he has realised the club will not be able to give him the tools to achieve this (ie) adequate financial backing given that he couldn’t bring his targets in during the Jan window.

Make no mistake we will need to BUY
2 strikers to replace Simpson and Bowie
A new first choice goalie
A replacement for Marc Leonard
A replacement for Sam sherring
A couple of wide players.

That’s at least seven first team players but in reality we will probably need three more squad players on top of this.
Given we can only get in five loans I’d imagine Jon would see the chances of the club buying five players in the summer when they can’t buy him one in Jan as very very unlikely and hence the club will do its usual trick of going back down in the second season as it isn’t prepared to spend to the required standard to ensure league one survival,

It keeps happening , the fans and more importantly Jon have seen it before and I’m sure he will be gone because of this before the start of next season.

David bower has failed to keep us as a stable league one club before and nothing makes me confident that he has learnt from those mistakes (at least he’s never come out and acknowledged things will be different this time as far as I’m aware).

That’s how I feel in a nutshell and I really hope David sees fit to back the club to help it on the field , mind you I like many others probably thought the same as the Jan window ticked down and it’s now clear Jon didn’t get the backing he was hoping for so maybe I’m just living in hope rather than expectation.

I think Jon now knows his stock is high and he will consider other jobs if he is backed financially better than he is here.

As always time will tell

You make some valid points/criticisms but provide no solutions other than owners simply putting in more money and therefore more debt.  What happens next year when we have the same issue?

If you look back at the history of this club these owners and manager are facing the exact same challenges every other owner and manager this football club has ever had.
70  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 05, 2024, 13:56:44 pm
There's a lot of detail in here I haven't come across before. Do you have sources? Thanks in advance, always good to see the club defended so clearly and decisively even if I'm not entirely on board with some of the points..

How refreshing that someone can respectfully disagree without throwing insults or making stuff up.

Everything I said is in the public domain.  Either interviews, website articles, fan forums etc.  I didn't think I posted anything that wasn't already known.  Is there anything specifically you want clarification on?

I also don't think we are that far apart in our thoughts on this.  I have no problem with some friction between the board and manager.  I bet most clubs up and down the country have the same when it comes to transfer budgets.  My problem is to make those comments public.  Let's reverse the situation.  What if the CEO or chairman made a public comment about a bad performance.  People would be all over that like a rash and rightly so.

Finally to be clear I love JB.  He's doing a great job in difficult circumstances and long may it continue.  Of course he gets the bulk of praise for any success but I was simply trying to point out that everyone at the club contributed to that success even the owners through the backing I mentioned in my previous post.  Some people may not like it or choose to belittle that contribution but I'm yet to read an argument against it based on actual factual evidence.
71  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Players Under & Out of Contract on: February 04, 2024, 02:06:15 am
I think that list of players in and out of contract next season is quite a nice balance.

A few out of contract that ideally I'd like to see renewed before the end of the season however there is definitely a decent chunk of budget being freed up which gives us plenty of scope to improve.
72  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 04, 2024, 01:59:15 am
Listened to JB's post match comments and I have to say I think he was out of order.  I love the guy and have been a big supporter of his from the beginning.

I know it's his passion sometimes but I think he was unprofessional today.  Personally a couple of the things he said should IMO should be kept internally.  I didn't like the way he put down some of the players when he said "look at what I'm having to put on the pitch".  That's his squad 100%.  He was making it clear he doesn't rate some of his players.

While I understand his frustration he needs to remember the club has backed him at crucial times and if the extra budget is not there he has to take his share of the blame for that.  Maybe win a cup game once in a while!

The club gave him the chance to manage in the football league.  They backed him with extra coaching and medical staff.  They backed him with better training pitches, matchday pitches and training facilities.  They backed him in making changes to the recruitment system and data analysis.  They've allowed him to bring in players when the budget has already been spent.

Maybe he should get rid of some of the deadwood in the squad?

I just checked the NTFC website and the first team squad has 27 players!  That's not including Dyche or Dadge.  It also ignores the youth players that are nowhere near the squad.  I know loads are injured but is the solution just to keep adding more?  What about bringing through some youth players once in a while?  He also has to accept some of the responsibility for injured players though that's difficult to quantify exactly.

He just signed the biggest paid managerial contract the owners have given anyone during their time at the club.  If he was unhappy with things he should have said that and got commitments before signing the deal.

I also agree with Marvo that he's not at the stage yet where he will walk into any other job.  I don't think clubs with money will see him yet as what they need it will be more clubs like us that have to outperform their budget.  That may change if he keeps being successfull but I think he's got a hell of a lot going for him at NTFC.

I love the guy.  It's a bl00dy tough job, today was a bad day at the office and being interviewed 30 mins after a poor performance is not ideal.      Think he should be making a couple of private apologies this week.
73  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Portsmouth (a) on: February 04, 2024, 01:32:02 am
A few positives to start.

I had another great away day with my son.  The support the fans have given at the away matches I've been to this season has been superb in both numbers and atmosphere.  We've had some tough days out at times but we've also had some of the best I can remember for years.

Real shame Leonards goal was so meaningless as it was an absolute banger.

Now the, not so good.  You can't as a team defend the way we did today against a top league one side.  You might get away with off days in league two but we've had too many in league one so far.

Some of the defending today has nothing to do with budgets, injuries and all the other excuses.

The first is a standard set piece to defend.  Either block the runner or track his run.  We did neither and simply stood still till it was too late.

I said to my lad before kick off the 5 back was a mistake for the way Portsmouth play.  Our full backs were in no mans land so many times neither attacking effectively and left so much space in behind them that the CB's seemed uninterested in covering.

As for the third goal what a shambles.  You load the box with your big men then play it short with no defensive cover when you lose it.  Again just plain dumb.

When you are a side trying to punch above your weight set pieces both defensively and attacking are so important and can make all the difference.

I'll give my thoughts on the other thread about Brady but in his defence as a coach I'd be p1ssed off like he was for defending like that.

Finally IMO Portsmouth are the best side I've seen us play.

You strike me as a person who struggles to wipe his own arse so I will leave it there.

Probably for the best if that's all you've got left.   Tongue
75  General Category / General Chat / Re: War on: February 02, 2024, 18:17:41 pm
What are you wittering on about now? WTF has Ukraine got to do with anything the article detailed how Gen Zer’s would refuse conscription because they didn’t support their country and would rather play video games.

Oooh back for second try having maybe skim read the actual article this time?

So you only think it's the UK Woke Gen Z who need a dose of war to sort them out?

Nobody needs a "dose of war" to sort themselves out for pretty obvious reasons.

It's a pretty dumb statement in isolation but it's even dumber to make that statement referencing an article that doesn't even say that and ridicules the "condescending boomers" who think the way you do!   Grin
76  General Category / General Chat / Re: War on: February 02, 2024, 18:02:53 pm
Sorry wasn’t around in 1964.

Can you act like a Boomer without being one?Huh?  Never mind...notice you didn't deny condescending.   Tongue
77  General Category / General Chat / Re: War on: February 01, 2024, 18:58:58 pm
Interesting article in the Evening Standard today about Gen Z’s and their inability to cope if there was a war and conscription, they have had it far too easy for too long and a dose of war is just what they need.
Being Woke will soon become a distant memory.  Cool

I wonder of you ever think before you post?

Are the "woke" Gen Z in Ukraine getting "just what they need" at the moment?

By the way did you only read the headline.  The article is far from what you portray?

They actually mention you in it...

"The Government has since said that conscription is not actually on the cards, but the idea of Gen Z being rounded up and sent to the frontlines had already prompted both horror and excitement (largely from condescending boomers) in equal measure.
78  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Injury Updates.... on: January 29, 2024, 21:04:16 pm

Hmmm. So if I've read that right there aren't more injuries now than before.  Who's going to tell JB?

Perhaps Sports Science has made everyone too aware of what could happen that we don't take risks anymore.  Lets's face it back in the day they were giving players cortisone injections and the like just to get them on the pitch.  Probably worked in the short term but had long lasting effects.
79  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Play-off watch on: January 29, 2024, 20:54:56 pm
MC would have a point….if it hadn’t been well over 50 years.  Tongue
You definitely have to take the opportunity of a promotion if it ever presents itself.

Don't get me wrong I'll be celebrating with everyone else when we win at Wembley.   Grin

I'll just be telling you all "I Told You So" next season when we are getting smashed every week and JB gets the sack.  Tongue
80  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: January 29, 2024, 20:47:38 pm
He settled a very hefty bill incurred from a Supporters Trust representative? Tell more.
If he's taking a salary he's quite clearly taking money out of the club. That's his perogative.
Wouldn't we all like to know how much  Smiley

I think you have read all of the words I posted just not necessarily in the right order.   Grin
