I thought Leonard was fantastic and what a player he could be by the end of the season. However, I'm not sure the strength is there yet to replace McWilliams or Sowerby. I see him playing in behind the striker like he did in the last 15 with McW and Fox holding. That cheeky backheel to set up the cross showed he is more than capable of being the creative force further forward.

Best ref of the season,  but that really isn't saying a lot unfortunately.

Think the sun got to Mitch, but he'll be back. Thought Haynes should have come on there earlier.

By the way, aside from the Burge save everyone is mentioning, I thought the one immediately before their goal was superb - looking forward to seeing it again - just unlucky it didn't prevent the goal.

1 comment having watched the Shef Wed Sunderland game.
Diamond was their best player - well above L2 standard.

Leonard looks like he may have the pass to unlock a defence, so maybe he can help with creativity.
On iFollow he also mentions playing all positions in a midfield THREE, which could be a further insight towards a revised formation this term.

I like the new full backs. Good players. In fact I thought the defence all did ok considering the oppo.

Still don't exactly love Maxted, but credit where it's due he also made some good saves (shame he caused a few for himself).

Thought Fox was less impressive, but wasn't really expecting him in that role behind the striker. Thought more of a McWilliams player, but we'll see. Then again, we did have Lewis there most of last season. Think this creative position is the key recruitment left for me. Otherwise Pinnick and Sammy may be the best there, maybe Hylton, but none perhaps ideal.

Hylton isn't a lone striker. Didn't work. Louis did well though.

Would have like to have seen Max Dyche get more than 10 min.

We signed a few "ball playing defenders" and there was a clear strategy to play out from the back. No doubt passing drilled in all pre-season. As a result it went too far and we passed when we needed to clear. I think we'll get there, this is what friendlies are for after all and we wont come across £7m forwards in L2, but it nearly cost us. Just need to get the balance and decision making right.

Acknowledged, but the 'option of further year' swings both ways and isn't just to the benefit of the club?

Previously we've done it in the clubs favour, like with Koiki last year.

It’s quite surprising that he didn’t decide to stay at Swindon given that Garner has left for Charlton.  Does anyone know if Swindon look likely to keep McKirdy?

Whilst I dont know the answer to that, I do know Swindon were a bit strapped for cash, which has resulted in 7 or 8 of their best players being out of contract this summer. As we've seen with Roberts/Horsfall, having your best players out of contract usually ends up the same way, or else you need to spend a larger portion of your budget to retain them. Does make it easier for a local rival to pick up a bit of a coup.  Tongue

In the Exeter game - end of April.

I love how very well they've done last season and I have every confidence they can contunue this enjoyable journey, but that was our management team's biggest failing this season imo. The way he was left to play on for probably 15/20 minutes despite being (a) clearly injured and likely making it worse, and (b) a complete liability in a footballing sense as he was barely able to move. Seemingly while they dithered over Harriman vs Mills and whether to play 4 or 5 at the back. Pretty poor and you have to wonder whether that lack of action ruled him out of the playoffs and turned a small injury into one that ultimately needed surgery.]

Manny’s team for Saturday,
McGowan.       Flores.

That's quite a turn around from your initial opinion of those two.
Have they exceeded your expectations, or are they just the best of a bad bunch in your opinion?
9  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Rochdale home 21.08.21 on: August 24, 2021, 20:46:41 pm
It might be based on games prior to that. Often players have crossed paths with someone previously.

If a player, even a good player, has only had a handful of starts over a few years, it may be argued that it'll take a few games for them to get fully up to speed.

Totally agree with Drilling's summary.

Thought Etete was rather good, but did run himself into the ground so could understand that change. Not so Kabamba though, so bringing on Rose for Etete only would have saved a sub to allow Kioki to inject some flair/pace late on.

I quite like Connolly, but I think I'd have tried Flores to see if he could inject some creativity in the middle. Also think Pollock has a role to play in that regard.

Whilst he never looks like scoring, I thought Vale's no21 did a brilliant job of holding the ball up front for them - like Bayo does.

Brady called Rose over for the sub within about a second of ANOTHER forward ball literally bouncing off BAS and dropping back to the Vale midfield. The ball wasn't sticking and as a result we were repeatedly losing possession. Brady thought Rose could retain possession better and in my opinion, he did that much better. He was good in the air and retained possession to bring others into the game or win a free kick. One of his better performances for me.

It's a tough job, but you have to be able to hold the ball for a few seconds with a CB trying to cut through you, and lay it off to a team mate. BAS needs to add this to his game if he's going to make it.

Have you seen them play?

2/3 times in person. McGowan my MOM vs Forest. It's my opinion so I can't be wrong, right?
14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Port Vale at home Saturday 7th August 2021 on: August 07, 2021, 21:09:09 pm
McGowan and Flores are great signings. Very surprised to read the criticism on here.
Purely my failing - I should be used to that on here by now.
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window on: July 21, 2021, 22:42:37 pm
No transfer rumours from me, but I'd love to see a rumor from ntfclad that proper striker, a poacher, is on the way in.

I attended both the Sileby and Forest games.
Jury still out on the GK's, although they look better with distribution.
3 at centre back look decent.and young Max has a chance of making it. Think Fraser with Guthrie is a solid pair and wouldn't be surprised to see the latter made captain.
The new right back I thought was MOM - solid in defence and whipped some nice crosses in. Last trialist did ok I thought - enough to challenge Mills.
Good options in midfield, and Pollock like having a top new signing. Good strength in depth and a few goals in there.
Two new proper wingers, not afraid to mix it and will cause defences big problems.

And then the strikers... erm... Kebamba looks pacey and ok, but not full of goals. And that's the problem. I don't have any confidence in any of our forwards to score regularly. I never think, "Rose will score today". Same for all. No Rico, Gabbiadini, Bayo, McGleish, Marquis, Morton etc that gave you that confidence.

Looks like another Morton/Collins/Marquis type loan is the best we can hope for?

What happened to Alex Jones coming back? Thought he had the best chance of the bunch.

Precis - We need a proper striker.

Just a reminder that he hasn't signed for Stanley and we don't know whether we were interested.

It’s all the Stoner kebabs

Had to Google what these were. Wow, you eat Italian heavy metal bands?
Shocked No wonder you are fat.

Quite pleased with the signings we've made from a style of play perspective. If we can muster some decent quality to plug the obvious holes at he back, I'd be fancying us for an exciting season.
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window on: June 10, 2021, 19:47:39 pm
If KT has identified poor recruitment as the primary reason for our relegation, and identified a data-based approach as the solution then we need to see some evidence that the process has improved.

There's only one form of evidence that really counts.

Seems Col U have signed two 35 year old very experienced Championship players from Ipswich, with a slightly younger Freddie Sears lined up too.
Will be interesting to see if signing all that experience and pedigree pays off. Hard to imagine it won't if they have youthful legs around that spine.
