We know they like to throw out GDPR, which is a bit different.

And I don't think they have that entirely right either. Yes, they absolutely have responsibilities as a data controller but it's a bit open to interpretation in how they can use the data they have, because there's a whole piece around what the subject of the data can "reasonably expect" you to do with it.

As what's essentially a members club you could argue that it would be "reasonable" for them to reach out to their members to confirm their details and to ask if it's OK to contact them in future. Frankly, even if it wasn't, with the numbers involved the ICO wouldn't be that bothered and the worst they'd get if reported would be a slap on the wrist!

My old neighbour used to have a Yorkshire Terrier. Every time you went into the back garden it was there, yap yap yapping at you through the fence. In the end you just zoned it out.

I suspect that's how the council feel right now. You can't be a consistent pain in the backside and throw accusations around over a considerable period of time and still expect a civil response.

When you fail to get one, you can't really be surprised or outraged without showing an extraordinary lack of self awareness,  and when your response is to start throwing in formal FOIs and official complaints then all you are doing is compounding the problem and making sure the relationship is utterly beyond repair. Yap yap yap.

They can request all they like. My guess is anything they get back will be redacted to buggery!
143  General Category / General Chat / Re: Gender and Sex on: February 13, 2024, 09:51:59 am
Like most things, I think this is pretty nuanced and there isn't a "right" or "wrong" answer. I've no doubt that gender dysphoria is a thing. I've personally known two people who have fully transitioned from male to female and I've nothing but respect for them for going through the process they did, braving social stigma and enduring a lengthy evaluation process and living as a woman for a long period before surgery was even an option. They both did it though and were a lot happier after having done it, so fair play to them.

In these more enlightened times I think it's entirely likely that more people who feel this way are comfortable to express it rather than keep it bottled up, as they are less likely to face public ridicule for doing so. I will admit to being quite skeptical about the sheer numbers we seem to be seeing though, particularly amongst young people. From talking to my kids it seems that there are fairly significant numbers of kids in their school that identify as trans, and we're talking several people in each year group. I'm also aware of several kids who were trans and now seemingly aren't. I think there's a bit of a fad for this at the moment; in the past we've seen punks and goths and emos, now it seems the way to mark yourself out as a bit different is to be trans. If this is the case, I think it's a bit sad because it diminishes things for those who genuinely experience gender dysphoria.

I also think this makes the whole debate about women's toilets and changing facilities a little bit tricky to navigate, so I'm not going to try!

To be honest, there are only two aspects I feel strongly about in the whole debate. Firstly is protecting the integrity of women's sport. As far as I'm concerned, however people want to live their lives is up to them as long as it doesn't affect anyone else, but there's no way people who were born male should be allowed to compete against those who were born female in physically demanding sports.

Even if they've fully transitioned, if they've gone through puberty as a man then they've put on size and muscle mass and that doesn't go away. It's hugely unfair on women competitors who work as hard as male athletes to get to the top of their game to then find they are competing against bog standard male competitors who have changed sex (or just decided to change their pronouns) who carry a massive physical advantage over them. Where's the incentive to compete?

If trans athletes want to compete then of course they should be accomodated, but it should be in a new class, not at the expense of female athletes.

The second is in the poisonous nature of the debate it seems to generate when anyone (particularly a woman, it seems) dares to question anything in this arena. I really, really hate the phrase "TERF". It belongs with gammon, boomer and Karen as terms that are used to stifle debate. Just because someone fits a certain archetype it doesn't completely invalidate their opinion on everything. I genuinely believe that most people have a live and let live attitude, but when people get attacked and accused of bigotry for questioning or, heaven forbid, using the wrong pronoun it sets people's back up, and that, ironically, is what leads to genuine bigotry.

To give an example, a friend of mine has someone working for him in a public facing role that was born female but now identifies as male. The company uniform is pretty gender neutral anyway but this person has long blond hair, wears makeup, jewellery and has long painted nails. The only indication of their choice of gender is their name badge, which most people won't look at. My friend had to pull them to one side a while back and have a difficult conversation because they kept snapping at customers for "assuming her gender" when they used female pronouns. Well, yeah, because you look like a girl and are making no effort to do otherwise. People aren't trying to offend you, they are making a very understandable and completely innocent mistake!

So there you are. A bit of a ramble, but you did ask. Wink

Yeah, but what about in 2024? Tongue

146  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The ‘Clare Balding’ POTS Bolton (h) 10th February 2023 on: February 10, 2024, 16:37:15 pm
I'm a big fan of Bowie. I was last season and I was delighted when he came back.

So I don't say this lightly. That was his best performance for us. Outstanding.
147  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Bolton Wanderers (h) on: February 10, 2024, 12:36:06 pm
The trouble with writing this one off, if Port Vale were to win and with Reading playing Charlton so somebody has got to get some points, we could end the day just 8 points off the drop zone. That's too close for comfort.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the team shouldn't try, I'm just managing my own expectations!
148  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Bolton Wanderers (h) on: February 10, 2024, 09:21:09 am
Deep breath, say what I want to say, then off to the bog to vomit.

i HOPE YOU GUYS WIN TODAY............

 Grin

So do we, my fen dwelling friend, but sadly I think hope is all we have today.

With Bolton sitting where they are and with the volume of injuries we have again I'm already filing this one under "get it out of the way and move onto the next one".

It sounds rather like someone has dropped a bollock on this one.

Are KT/DB the club saviours or are they dishonest, asset strippers only looking out for themselves? -

I think that sort of polarisation is at the root of a lot of the conflict on here (and I know you aren't saying they are one side or the other, Peter).

I don't think they are either, but rather are somewhere in the middle. Are they looking for a long term profit from developing the surrounding land?

Yes, of course they are.

In the interim though they have been decent custodians of our club as they've overseen progress both on and off the field (L1 football, training ground, community schemes, more professional set up throughout, biggest gates in years).

Would different owners have taken us further and faster? Maybe,  but they could also have run us into the ground; that's all just pie in the sky stuff because we'll never know.

151  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Welcome Dominic Gape on: February 03, 2024, 13:48:32 pm
It sounds like he's exactly what we need with McWilliams and Sowerby out and frees up Leonard to get further forward.

Yes, he's an injury concern but has a good pedigree and I assume he's on very low wages the way Osew and Norman were last year, so low risk for us and allows him to keep his foot in the door in playing terms. Win win.
152  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: January 2024 Transfer Window on: February 01, 2024, 09:02:53 am
Wrexham are a bit of a freakshow in that they have multimillionaire Hollywood owners. No one can compete with them financially; they are a lower league Man City in that regard. I don't think it's fair to compare our owners to theirs.

Don't get me wrong, I love the TV show and I think it's great what the Hollywood circus is doing for the town of Wrexham as a whole. I hope they are enjoying the ride as I'm sure most of us would rip your hand off if we were offered the same opportunity.

I must admit to a bit of good, old fashioned schadenfreude when they lose though!
153  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: January 30, 2024, 05:29:53 am
Come Dale you said " "training at our own facility", so I think you DID say we own it ? Embarrassed  Roll Eyes

Oh come on... the company I work for have about 200 sites dotted around the UK - our stores, our DCs, our outbases, our offices..  and do you know what? We don't own a single one of them! They are all leased, because that's what makes the most financial sense.

I'm not sure why it's deemed important that  the Cobblers physically own it; if you own a house there will always be someone who will be willing to buy it from you so it's an investment. If you own a dedicated sports facility, what's the market going to be like for that if you want to sell it when there isn't another football team around for miles?
154  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: January 29, 2024, 16:54:04 pm
Pretty sure KT has said several times in the past neither he or DB take a salary or charge interest on their loans.

That's why I was asking Random to clarify what he means by taking money out of the club and what evidence he has to show this.

He has said that. I seem to remember there was some accusation or other that the club paid for his flights back and forth to Florida.

No idea if it's true and I don't have too much of a problem if they do!  I claim expenses for work travel so I don't see why he shouldn't.

If he didn't come back as often he'd be pilloried for never going to games!
155  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: January 29, 2024, 14:30:23 pm
Do you know, for the life of me I honestly can't figure out why the club won't have anything to do with you lot...

I agree with the sponsors on Bowie - never gave up and on another day could have got more of a reward for his efforts.
159  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Shrewsbury Saturday 27th January. on: January 27, 2024, 23:23:12 pm
We can cope without McWilliams or Sowerby but not both

Now it's all down to how we bounce back

That about sums it up. We were poor today without then both and were never really in it after half time.

It's a blip. We stick it up and move on.
160  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Shrewsbury Saturday 27th January. on: January 27, 2024, 12:21:03 pm
I think the Wembley debacle against Bradford is easily the most anticlimactic but I'd say I was more angry and embarrassed than disappointed. I'd dragged a load of non-Cobbler supporting mates along with my then new girlfriend and her son (now my wife and stepson) with me and the combination seeing him nearly in tears while my mates took the piss out of me really compounded it all for me! I'll never understand what Boothroyd was thinking with his team selection that day. His ego overcame his common sense.

Mansfield away in the second leg of the playoffs has to be up there, but I think the worst for me was Barrow away. I was actually at the beam back at Sixfields and the atmosphere was amazing until the Bristol goals started to flow and there was that sinking feeling in your stomach as you realised what was happening. Gutting.
